Howdy! Tis rapidly approaching the season where we milk everyone who claims to love us for expensive gifts whilst buying "meaningful" (cheap) ones for them. Well, Balthie was having a delimma and thought that he would get some help from all ye technical minded gamers out there.
I gots a:
1533 megahertz AMD Athlon XP
768 Megabytes o' RAM
RADEON 8500 SERIES V-card (The 128 mb edition)
And a mobo wit' a 4x AGP slot
Now, I was kinda hoping for a visit from the upgrade fairy this year round, and kinda had my eye on one of those newer video cards, perhaps one o dose Radeon 9800 pro's...
But then realized that the newer cards are moving to newer PCI-express slot format, that might mean a new mobo is in order first...
But getting a new mobo would probably neccesitate a new processor, 1.5 gig is not that hot these days...
And RAM is always good!
The question, if you were shopping for me this Christmas, REALLY loved me, and was willing to slap down somewhere around the realm of 200$ to show me just how much, what would YOU get me this Christmas?
Or reworded, what do you think would get me the most bang for my 200 bucks?
Thanks!
Balth

if i really loved you, and had 200 bucks to spend on you, this is the way I would go.

well, you're not telling me what TYPE of ram, so I can't tell you which ram to get,
whatever speed, make it a 512 stick, that'll push you to around 250
and your question regarding pci express, yes they are becoming more and more common, but these agp cards still rock! I don't plan on changing mine anytime soon, there's no need!

OK, so not neccesary to go for the PCI-express...
But what about a mobo with a 8x AGP slot, mines only 4.
By the way, your rig looks EXACTLY like what I'm eventually shooting for.
haha, that's cool, it's a raidmax scorpio 868 mid tower, I was looking to change it soon since the cpu is wedged right beneath the psu so it's hard to get a good heatsink in
and I doubt that the x matters, I mean...
well nevermind, I just heard that long time ago from someone somewhere

Getting my upgrade from the fat bearded man also.
Gettin me a 6800, and an AMD 3500+ 939 (and a 939 motherboard of course). Should be kickin for HL2.
Not a 6800GT? If your going to spend that much money, at least get a GT, youll be happy you did
yeah, of ourse im getting a GT Getting the gainward golden sample or BFG, whichever comes up cheapest on ebay. They both overclock really nicely, past ultra levels.
Dont try that shit with me man, im the badest tech mofo ever!

Then you should get a chaintech, I originally got a Leadtek but it was broken, and then i noticed a ton of other people getting broken ones too , Leadtek = crap quality control. I have a Chaintech, and its the cheapest 6800GT i have found, and it overclocks really well (mines a little screwed up cause i cant get my memory past 925, which is very wierd because stock speed is supposed to be 1000, but it runs everything fine so i dont complain... but i know most people can get 1200 memory, and 420-430 core)
Eh... Very tech talkie, but...
Got any ideas for that $200 guys?
Well, heres the dilema... If you wanted a new CPU youd need a new mobo, and that = $$$
Id say go for a 9800, or 9800pro if they want to spend a little more, and the one murt suggested isnt too bad i just wouldnt reccomend an XT model, for gefore they suck
So you would reccomend the Radeon 9800 pro, even though I only gotta 4x AGP slot?
Cuz I like that answer.
Oh yeah, and should I spend the extra on the 256mb Radeon 9800 pro, or just go for the 128mb one?
Just stick with the 128, unless you want to shell out a hell of a lot more money. If youre going to get a 256mb 9800, then just get a 6800GT, almost the same price.
