The vast majority of persons who are praising and rating Atlantica Online highly have all registered in 2009. Nuff said.
Basing active subscription numbers for determining quality of gameplay can only be taken into account for subscription games since there is no financial commitment upfront for a supposedly free to play game. Having said that, taste varies and Billboard music chart sales do not represent quality music for me.
The most popular forum activity rating list is a more realistic representation of which game is a better quality game because of the amount of active discussion and therefore sincere interest.
I think that MMORPG.com is fully aware how flawed their voting chart is for most popular game and that hundreds of shills have pushed Atlantica Online's rating up. Atlantica Online buys a lot of advertisement so it's all good.
I agree. Atlantica on top when most of the comments say something like, "A nice game with an interesting idea but JUST ANOTHER GRINDER"? LotRO, WAR, and EVE are the only worthy choices that are actually there, in my opinion. Shrug, ratings mean nothing. Edit: And DAoC hiding there at the bottom !
so pretty much you agree with the ratings except for atlantica...which is the same as i stated lol
Ok, lets compare EQ2/WoW. Both launched within weeks of each other. Both had lots of hype and advertising. Blizzard had a fanbase and soe had a fanbase. Wow was breaking sales records in its first year (long before the tv ads and such). Adding servers to meet demand, selling out of copies, etc. EQ2 was LOSING subscribers and merging servers within a year.
SOE's fans numbered in the hundreds of thousands while Blizzard's numbered in the millions. Not quite a fair comparison. Add in the research that suggests people read the books their friends read, listen to the music their friends listen to, etc, and what you get is a huge advantage on Blizzard's side.
EQ2's launch was also much smoother than WoW's launch, which suffered from serious lag and bugs.
In fact, if Blizzard had put out EQ2 and SOE put out WoW, I'd say EQ2 would have had a million subscribers within months and WoW would have struggled.
However, I do think that the continued growth of WoW over the course of the last several years demonstrates that WoW is definitely a solid game that people really enjoy. There's a reason why Blizzard has so many rabid fans -- they put out awesome games.

I think it has less to do with WoW being a good game, and more to do with Blizzard knowing how to run a game.

My point was that no amount of advertising would simply make a games subscription base swell as someone above suggested [and so many people seem to think is the key to untold riches for an mmo]. EQ2 had a smoother launch and yet lost a substantial portion of its population in the first year, because the game wasn't finished and the parts there were finished didn't appeal to the market place like soe thought it would.
Blizzard had a rough launch, but continued to grow, because the gameplay was superior. It even stole a sizable portion of soes playerbase.
