Mini PvP in AoC

alan5555alan5555 Member UncommonPosts: 4

Thinking of trying AoC out, probably on a PVE server.  I've read a lot about the game, and have seen Mini-PvP mentioned, but never described.  I'm assuming it is like the "battlegrounds" of other games, like Warhammer Online.  I'd really appreciate it if someone could describe this - how many per side, are there objectives (like capture the flag), etc.

Thanks!

I tried minigames a couple of months ago, and it sucked imo. There weren't enough players that were willing to do them, possibly because guilds with premade teams kept killing those that dared enter (and the fact that this was before the server merges).

I found the WoW battlegrounds to be more fun tbh.

There is so much PvP going on in the "real" world of Hyboria that minigames seem redundant. I don't know if there are even enough people bothering to line up for the minigames, but that I'm not sure about, since I haven't tried it in a long while.

It is preferable not to travel with a dead man.

Deadman I have to disagree with you here. The PvE servers also offers PvP to it's players, but it's on their own choise. They can go to zones that by the storyline is totally outlawed. These zones have full PvP action, and this is one of the very much undervalued advantages of having an instanced world. There can be different PvP and PvE rulesets in the different zones. No other game can provide that. When it comes to PvP minigames, that is also a for of PvP available on PvE servers (as well as PvP). It is used very much for level 80, It is used much for level 60-79, and less for 40-59 or less... I am very often in these minigames and it is really fun. It have been some less activity in the minigames since all the new raid material came out with 1.04. Everyone are raiding like crazy now.:D

But in general, if you want to do some controlled PvP but still play PvE you can do that very nicely on a AoC PvE server.

  • It's called minigames.  It's 6 vs. 6 (full group vs. full group).  4 maps, each one is pretty well done.  One map has a player-elimination ruleset- destroying the enemy totem first to stop resurection, then kill the enemy players.  The other three are essentially capture the flag(but, hur hurh, instead of a flag it's called a skull and instead of red vs. blue, it's blood vs. steel -_______- ).  In any case that there is a tie when the time runs out, the winner is decided by the team with the most kills.

Upon winning any minigame, you earn your guild some small amount of guild points used for bidding on sieges.  You also get a small amount of PvP xp for each person your team kills.  Also, when you die, you are rezzed instantly at the resurection point.

There really isn't much to complain about in the pacing or flow of most of the maps.  With 6 on 6, staying with everyone else is the most important thing.  Mostly, minigames are a good quick way to find some PvP whenever, as you can queue up from any location and when it's done it'll put you right back into the game world from where it plucked you from.  Of course you can also join up as a group of any size.  They can be pretty fun in and of themselves, and while there are many faster ways to earn PvP exp you earn enough to make it not feel pointless.  My guild has a couple different mingame team groups that play just for the fun of it.  The Matchmaking system is pretty alright, you can see how many people are queued up waiting for a specific minigame map and you have the option to join the first available, there are a couple of brackets each ~20 levels wide and a level 80 bracket and it automatically apprentices your level up to one level below max level of the bracket in each case.

The only real issue is that class distribution is truly random between the two teams, and having a team full of soldier classes vs. a team full of mages isn't very fun and has just as much chance of happening as having two teams with an equal distribution of classes.

If you are into fast structured pvp action, then I'm afraid Age of Conan would be a disappointment.

Not many people play minigames so it's difficult to get a game going and when you do it's.. kinda boring.

Most people prefer open world pvp which is even worse! It's a free-for-all lowbie gankfest. It's much too chaotic imo.

But who knows maybe you like it.

I play on Fury-pvp(EU) and there are new minigames every 5-15mins, so yes many people play minigames. I also have some old guild friends who play on Crom-pve(EU), and they told me that there are new minigames every 5-20 min, Max time they waited for a minigame is 22min.
So yes many people play minigames.

I remember it beeing like that in WoW(!) also, until Blizzard implemented cross realm battlegrounds. One of the few genious touches Blizzard made on WoW imo.

Not sure if Funcom could have the capacity and/or the technology to do something similar. It would have been nice.

Yeah it would be nice if Funcom did something to make the mini games more popular.

Cross server mini-games would be one way or give adventuring XP for kills in the mini games(currently you do get pvp xp, but this does not seem to draw people in).

I for one would love to see this area addressed, and enhanced possibly with a few more maps and possibly mini seige type scenarios

It takes way long to get a minigame going in Age of Conan. And when you finally get it, it's quite boring actually.

Funcom should play Guild Wars to see how professionals do it.
