I'm sure you can find your way (with relative ease) to one of those games using telnet.
One game that doesn't require a monetary subscription would be Materia Magica (http://www.materiamagica.com/) but I haven't played it much myself and what I did see of it, it wasn't that great. You could always search on http://www.mudconnect.com/ but those that I've listed are pretty much top quality as far as I've come across.

Runescape is my choice since i dont have any experience about other java-based mmorpg. I dont think runescape is terrible game.It can be quite addictive at start but in the end it gets quite boring.
I used to play runescape it was a good game but then i started playing this other game called tibia. Runescape isn't a bad game they listen to the players. No other game i've played has been so attentive. Also the free accounts and the Paying members get Alot of things. I haven't played alot of games so i can't be a great judge but runescape offered alot, even though i did get bored after awhile and leave.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Runescape = Java?
Runescape doesnt need any download, so im assuming its Java. not a bad game
I think RuneScape is the only MMORPG made in Java (too bad it stinks).
Unless you want text-adventures. O_O
There're alot of text based MMORPGs in Java.
you get what you pay for. well its not a terrrrrible game for a Java game. Guild Wars will be packed! its gonna be sweet!
Guild Wars isn't an MMORPG.
Thanks for the off-topic, and if it isnt a MMORPG, what are all those 100+ people doing in one city?
I played runescape back when I could play java games at work. Now that I get fired if they find me playing I surf various forums....
Anyway its not bad for a time killer but i never played outside of work. I prefer to pay for a good game.
