Here's an interview about champions online:

Champions Online Interview

My favorite quote from it is:

"We're looking at more of a balanced approach when it comes to guided gameplay and exploration. While there's a number of the traditional quest-givers such as a police officer looking to help bring a villain to justice you'll also find a lot of heroic adventure simply by exploring the world. You might come across some lost hikers being threatened by strange monsters in Canada or in the midst of taking down some super-powered gangs you might find a clue to one of their nefarious plots."

I hated running mission after mission in City of Heroes because it really dragged on to feel like I was doing the same thing over and over again.  I hope they really make Champions Online an exploration-heavy game as I love the idea of a superhero MMO.

I hear you, the missions in COH were sort of generic and repetitive. I didn't think the game was bad but it got boring for me faster than other mmorpgs I have played.

I prefer handcrafted content over the randomized maps that games like COH and AO have, even if that means less overall content in the game. The outside zones need to have unique landmarks that server a purpose. In CoH, there wasn't much point in doing anything in the outdoor areas except traveling to your next random mission door.
