Problem patching

rsrestonrsreston Member UncommonPosts: 346

I've installed AoC. No icon was created on the Desktop.

I found the ConanPatcher.exe and ran it. It scans the local files ("1/4"), starts to update them ("2/4"), stops and doesn't pick up. I have to close it, start it all over again and, hopefully, the download rate will not drop to zero and download will continue for sometime again.

But now it doesn't go on anymore: at the bottom it's written: 138KB/131KB - 4/7 - --:--:--

I did a Resource Database verification and no file showed up as corrupted.

I tried running the patcher as Administrator but to no avail.

As dangerous as it may be, my firewall is off.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium 32b, Intel Core 2 Duo T9400, 4GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.

I couldn't find much information on Google...

What should I do? Thanks.

Have you looked in games under the start menu? That's where mine was. Many vista games don't put icons on the desktop, Only in "Games".

I'm almost 100% positive that's what the problem is. Click start then on the right side near pictures and music is games.

@OP, follow what this user said. The icon for the game is created in the start menu -> games -> games explorer

Run the game by executing that icon and see if it works. Let us know if it doesn't.

I was able to find the Games menu but it didn't fix my problem.

I searched on the official forums and nothing.

One possible reason for the patching stalling over time with the behavior described could be the internet security package you might be suing. At some point, I had exactly that behavior and it turned out to be induced by the Panda IS 2008 I was using.

I never really understood how it could stall the patching over time instead of just blocking it right away, but disabling it resolved the issue  (and this was reproducable).

If you have any package like that running, try to turn it off just for the process of patching.

I have installed AoC 2 times on my computer and both times the first installation failed. My whole game was broken, my character fell through the floor etc. After trying to fix it for hours I finally reinstalled it and it worked. Second time I went straight to reinstall.

AoC installer is made of bad code so there's always a great chance of corrupted installation. Just do a reinstall 1-2 times and you should be fine.

I tried ending McAfee Security Center's process but it didn't work.

I'm contemplating reinstalling the game but what bothers me is that it downloaded MBs of patching files before (step 1/4) and now when the download starts, the download rate plummets to zero and all stops. But activating the game over and over over two days led to some stable patching sessions. So I keep trying, hoping it'll pick up, finish this 2/4 step and continue into 3/4.

Alright, I'm not that firm with current McAffee versions, but simply shutting it down might not be enough in order to sort this. Check for remaining services that might still be running and make sure to manually shut them down.

If that still won't help, it's time to consider a fresh install. In that case, make sure that after using the regular uninstall, you clean any stuff remaining in the filesystem as well as in the registry manually. After that, make a fresh install (with McAffee tunred off) and patch it (again, without McAffee for a start).

That's the recommended precedure for the patcher hickups that appear in some cases. You can find a more detailed instruction, if I remember correctly, in a sticky within the technical part of the official forum.

Alright, as nothing worked, I'm uninstalling and reinstalling AoC. I hope it works now...

By the way, does anybody know about an AoC trial? Or buddy codes? I'd appreciate one.

Does your ISP have a limit or fair usage policy? I had a similar problem at a friends house when the ISP fair usage policy kicked in at certain hours and slowed downloads down to almost nothing.

It worked. Finally, and without a hiccup.

    Thanks, guys, for the help!

Oops, didn't see this message - good idea but I was downloading other things in-between AoC's installation, so that wasn't an issue.
