People either love, or hate this game.

I believe these people can be summed up mostly by those who spent a few hours playing, and those who did not.

Seriously, when u first log in, its TERRIBLE. Some reasons for this.

-Steep learning curve

-NO DIRECTION

-Harsh environment (even ur own racial buddies attack you)

-Interface (its a bit uncomfy at first)

-Lack of NPC mobs (their AI is close to bad and youll get annoyed chasing goblins trust me)

These make it extremely hard to enjoy the game in the first hour.. but im here for some advice as to what to do to maximize that first hour and learn quickly so that u can get past that and see that the game really DOES have a lot to offer. What you need to do is:

-Relax, play the game, dont let it play you.

-Ask questions. People WILL help if u ask.

-MAKE FREINDS. I cant stress this enough, as soon as i found a clan, and got some help (armor, weapons) things were IMMEDIATELY more fun and much better. Find people with a willingness to help.

-Choose a path. Try out different skills, theres a lot, so check everything out to see what you would enjoy, dont try one and just decide it all isnt for you.

-Realize that this game will take WORK, and with that comes reward. Sorry for WoW players, this game is not immediate gratification.

Goodluck in there guys.. im confident if u give it some time, youll really enjoy it.

Take care

    Totally agree and good post.

The game won't be for everyone, some of the reasons many love it are the same reasons others would never play it.

Sandbox sounds good until you log in and have no clue what to do so you whack a tree for a bit and log off. Sandbox just isn't for everyone.

FFA PvP isn't for everyone of course, you work hard just to watch your stuff get taken by a jerk ganking in the goblin area.

Skill levelling isn't for everyone. Some people just can't put down the concept of levelling, so they go out and grind skill levels and don't like it.

Plus on top of that it's an independent developer so it won't have the same features and support that some gamers take for granted. I feel that independent developers are the only source of niche games and I'm willing to play through some bugginess.

It's just not a game for all people and I don't mean any offence saying it.

I agree.  I hated my first several hours in game.  I actually decided that I would help beta test the game and that was that, no playing come release.

Good thing I made the decision to keep playing, because boy, when I really got into the game I started really enjoying myself.  About a week into it I realized I was having more fun than I had had during pre-cu swg, which is a game that I loved.

I agree, pretty good short review, and as an EVE player, I can certainly understand how the learning curve and interfaces could turn someone off at first.

Once AV gets their act together and makes the game easy to purchase (yes, I want easy mode) I'll be taking the plunge.

Yeah I hear ya, all the time it takes to level to end game, run regular end game instances,  then run heroic versions of those instances. Meanwhile crafting gear requiring items that have 4 day cooldowns, while also grinding reputation with multiple factions for recipes and item enhancements. Then sending out applications to guilds just for the chance to spend yet more time wasting away in the same damn raid week after week, all so you can replace the hard earned gear you already spent weeks compiling, sounds like "immediate gratification" to me too. Yeah...

    Good post OP.

Its a pity that you have to mention these things to these insta-kiddie generation of players. Those things were something we MMO vets LIKED about our online experiences in the good old days..(find out  yourself, share experience with others, write usefull guides about what you found out)

I am an old school veteran player and while i did not mean to offend WoW players, i thought it should be discussed and observed that if you are looking for what WoW offers, you probably are not going to get that. Now if you are like me and have some patience (and some knowledge of EQ in its hay-day) you might really enjoy this game. That was all i meant by the WoW comment, of course it takes work to play WoW as well, but its jsut a different beast is all.

  • arrisbarrisb Member UncommonPosts: 194

    Great game!

It is the closest thing to a 3D UO that we are likely to get in a long time.

As mentioned, there are a few issues.  Only a fool would say its perfect, but damn!  I havent wanted to log into an MMO this badly while at work since UO, and that is the greatest compliment I could give any MMO.

If you are pre-Trammel UO'ers, I would say try it.  You might be pleasently surprised.

While WoW is undoubtedly easier to pick up and play than EQ, there is still no immediate gratification in the game. It takes a lot of long hours to level, gear, grind rep, guild app., etc., just to see any of the good content or wear the good gear. I don't think anyone playing a game where people were able to build whole cities and take down world dragons within a few days of the game's release have any right to throw out the same old tired WoW stereotypes.

instant gratification comes in MANY ways. I never implied that you were instantly gratified with end game. What i AM suggesting is that there are elements compared to many mmos that work faster and have less steps. For instance crafting, yes it is work but it is not NEARLY as hard as crafting in EQ2 when it began or in vanguard or eq1. You can literally get through half of a crafting skill (225) in nearly an hour or 2 if u have the mats. Now lets say you had to mats to get halfway skilled with crafting in eq2 when it started. That was a damn nightmare of make this and that in order to get this that is one piece of 5 things you require to make a Fine Steel Dagger (really low dagger), and they eventually had to soften it up.

Another example is the leveling, i dont know of ANY mmorpg that is easier to level then wow unless it has some sort of exploit or is some f2p mmorpg that ive never heard of. Fact is back in september before the game was released there was a stress test contest. Top 3 highest level of each class per server was offered closed beta key for the stress test weekend. I remember that weekened in florida there was a hurricane and we lost power a day and i still managed to make top spot for my ne hunter by attaining lvl 47 in just a weekend (before they made it even MORE user friendly) and i did that solo.

The idea isnt that WoW isnt work, the idea is that it is LESS work then MANY RPGs out there and there are MANY instances of self-insta gratification along the way, and if you really truely believe im wrong, ask ANYONE out there thats been playing MMOs for the last 10ish years (and god help you if you ever even mention anything to the guys that played MUDs, i was on the tail end of that train).

    Take care

Also, building cities and taking down "world dragons" is not always the "end game", this is why you are brainwashed. People ask what the end game is in darkfall, the truth is, the really fun mmos HAVE NO END GAME. End game is counter to what an mmorpg IS in its base essence, and that is a NEVER ENDING game. Sure there are always strong monsters and secret places, but to consider that the goal or pivotal point in the existance of your mmo character is just fundementally wrong and you missed the whole point of playing to being with if that is what you are shooting for. GOOD mmorpgs dont have to answer the question "what do high levels do for fun?", because it should be relatively obvious when you play and for darkfall its "the same thing youve been doing since you started playing". Being able to do whatever you want, when you want, is the glory of a sandbox game, expecially ones not based around levels. I find it funny that you stereotyped end game mmorpgs in the same sentence you asked not to throw out stereotypes.

First you say the game is great because it requires work and gives no immediate gratification, then you backtrack and say, "Being able to do whatever you want, when you want, is the glory of a sandbox game...". So which is it? If I can log in and on day one build a city and get epic loots from dragons then sign me up!

By those who are better? Don't you mean those that have more players on their side? I've seen the video's and it's a zerg fest, there appears to be little skill involved. Let's see, mana missile a few times until you're in range then left click 'em to death. REAL complex...

The harsher the environment, the friendlier the population seems to be to newcomers.

I've noticed that in EvE and Darkfall.

It really helps bring players together as a community.
