From what I have read STO is going to be a massive single player game.
Doesn't this defeat the purpose of playing a game online?

This thread is ignorant on so many levels. Yeah, it's a massive player single game where thousands will be playing together.

Hey, you PC crew people aren't even trying hard anymore eh?
Do you people really think that anyone is going to believe that because there's no PC crews no one will be grouping? Do you really think people won't get that they'll still be able to group in space, and it'll actually be way way way way more fun with everyone having a ship to control?

Yes thousands of players will be playing their missions online, but how do players interact during play?

I am not a Player Crew person, as I don't really see how it could work. (full time anyhow) Looking past surface value of what the premise of the game is, I don't think it's an unreasonable assumption that this is a single player game. This is in evidence by the misspelling of the title of their own game. Sadly, this is becoming a more common mistake these days.
It's also a coincidence that games with misspelled titles are proving to be massive single player games.

The exact same way they do in every other game. What about not having player crews stops players from interacting? As I asked in another thread, please explain the difference between 5 players grouping on a ship, and five players grouping with their ships?
It'll be the same answer as there.
There is absolutely no difference.
worked just fine in swg when you needed 2-8 people for the bigger ships
What misspelling is that?

Well except for most people hating it and the game that is.
Easy. Ships above a certain class size require x number of players to pilot. Posittions can be filled either by npc's or other players. Skill of the npc's determined by level/skill of the captain. Stations crewed by players receive a small bonus to whatever it is they do.
The upshot would be that you can captain small craft on your own or captain larger ships with either npc's or a player crew. That would be (imo) a dynamic of an MMO that caters to lots of different kinds of players. The fact they could have gone this or some other route and chose not to is why people say its a single player game with multiplayer rather than an MMO.

The propper spelling for the game being produced is WoW Trek Online. This is a common occurence these days. I first noticed after playing Mythic's latest release, that the title on the box, websites and on the disk was misspelled. The propper spelling is WoWhammer.
Also on the horizon is WoW Wars: The Old Republic,(printed as Star Wars: TOR) and WoWGate Evolution. (prinyed as JumpGate Evolution)

totally irrelevant....people hated it when they changed the core gaming engine to the NGE. Jump to Lightspeed + Original SWG = awesome.
You would think games suck after playing and loving it for 2 years and then having them change the game upside down on you.

Ummm no, not even close.
People hated the game as soon as it was released. It wasn't "awesome" at all. It was a terrible grindfest with horrible combat mechanics and too many useless classes with too many useless skills. The 600K to 800K people that bought the box and couldn't stomach the game enough to pay after the first free month didn't think it was "awesome" at al, and of those that were left, only @ half didn't like the CU & NGE. The rest stayed and kept the game alive and enjoyed themselves.
Furthermore, when they added the ships, people hated being under the thumb of egomaniacs and their play time being dictated by whether so and so could stay connected or whatever (which by the way would be one of the big reasons the concept would fail in STO). By a huge huge margin the most popular option, for those left playing the game, were the single player ships.
So the real lesson to be taken from SWG?
People, by a vst majority, prefer having their own ship. End of story.

Bullshit. People were leaving that game way before the the first Combat Upgrade because there was nothing to do past grinding bols and changing templates unless you were a crafter. For combat players, which by the way make up the majority of the playerbase, the game was just a boring grindfest.
Far as your bigger ship example, that little freature didn't do squat to make the game better. So you could walk around the ship. Big whoop. What do you do AFTER you've walked your ship? Stay there and wack off to how great the interiors look?

if you check the sto website, space groups are along the line of a fleet(i.e. several ships together) in order to take down bigger targets/harder missions etc
also grouping in away missions as professions are there despite what some ppl say

So you mean us and the fans of TOR have to look forward to the dreadful prospect of playing online with millions of others? Sounds like fun to me.

Hmm lets think about this! Maybe the fact that not everybody wants to be Kirk, Pacard, Sisko, Janeway,or Archer. Some of us want to be scotty, Worf, Odo, Paris, or T'pol. Why is it so hard for you to see past your own nose?

Hmmm where are all of these I hate POB ships threads you are claiming exsists? As for people hateing SWG that has no bearing on the topic at hand because that was due to changes in the core game not space.
So unless you can make a logical arguement in defence of your statements your coments have no merit.

Except, most people hated the game long before the CU and NGE. The 600K to 800K that hated it after they wasted their money on the box, and then never bothered to pay for the first paid month. Man, people sure like to revise history to suit their arguments.
as well, only a insignificant number of RPers liked any other ships besides the singles. Either you never played the game since they were introduced, or you're just making stuff up.
It all sounds so much like it. Episodic (read: likely instanced) content and everyone alone on his ship. Sounds dull to me.

Here we go again for the ill informed....
"A role-playing game (RPG; often roleplaying game) is a game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters.[1] Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization,[1] and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.[2] Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.[2]"

How can it be massive when it is only single? Duh?
I don't mind the concept really but we need more hands on before we can really have a informed opinion. But I really interested on space battles how big can they get? Can we have a huge clash between federation and klingons of 50-100 ships or more in the same area? That would make up for some flaws in the game if this is doable. Plus they have that first-person element to the game as well.
Personally I much rather get NPC's to man different stations and distribute points to the areas I think are the weakest or purchase certain people of quality. I think that is a decent concept. I really want to know how they are going to handle player death?
