Another tip, realize that many of the spells/skills of ToS and other spell casters have cooldown time. I normally hold back before their first as bad as bad can be spell goes off, put on some spell resistance buffs and go in beating the crap out of them. YOU HAVE TO THINK!!! Thats the biggest appeal of AoC. You can develop any tactic you want, and you will win as long as you outsmart your oponent. It's pretty well balanced, even though ToS still is a bit OP.
When I play AoC the only thing I have to think is: "what's the fastest way to unsubscribe?".
I found the combat boring button smashing. Some people seem to think combat in AoC is difficult but it's not. There are many MMO's out there with much challenging and more fun combat mechanics. Combat in AoC is really easy, both melee and caster. Maybe you have only played WoW before or something?
Would have to disagreee with community, it is proobably the biggest detractor atm. I'm playing on a PVP server so maybe that is why, but even in a pvp game like shadowbane, a community can be a positive aspect, even in Lineage 2, which is a pvp game has a much superior community. THe community that I've found on the pvp server seems to be the mmor rejects who finnally found a game they can be themselves without catering to other, which is fune, but it leads to just weak game play for new players. Class imbalances are a HUGE issue for this game, finding out that basically no melee character is worth a dime, I've had to change play style to cater the gamesmechanics, this is annoying when in a pvp game a tank can't play tank, at all. The mitigations and armor values mean absolutely 0, which is probably why tanks cant be a tank. You call this a true review, but you missed some of the absolute key essentials for a real pvp environment. Seriously go play Shadownbane at look at how miticulous the numbers add up and the effects of the numbers output. AoC fails at this in a massive way that true pvpers can see this and not even waste time on a subscription. Feels like a unfinished dinner, there is a great sauce on your plate, but there is no meat and potatoes that are standard in well thought out dish. Think Funcom got the words "brutal" and "redundant" confused.
YOU HAVE TO THINK!!!
Yes htere is plenty of time for thinking when your chain rooted, chain stunned. Yes , people have to think a lot, either play a class you would like to play , or play the class Funcom designed the entire game around. No one on the pvp servers is playing melee charachers, they are all HOX, Rangers, Assassins, and ToS. Maybe you should come on the pvp server, instead of writing this fluff bullshit about how great and balanced the world is insiide a confined pvp` seige area.
Really, you have 2 speeds in this game General servers which is slow, and the pvp servers fast. The game pledges the miost brutal pvp , yet I lack any tools to this brutality ? Shadowbane is the only game that can even come close to the word brutal. Shadowbane players came to AoC , then came back to Shadowbane, should tell you a lot , this pvp is a joke. The seiging is a joke, the nmini games is a joke. The PVE content is the only thing that saves this entire game from beioing a complete jokle.
Think ion that and get back to us when you go roll a character on shadowbane to compare real pvp from this wonderland bull crap.
Getting angry are we... tsk tsk tsk...
Hey don't forget to add your comments to the AoC newcomers section in AoC forums.ageofconan.com/forumdisplay.php. Kind of funny everyone else seem to be very happy upon their return, while you are not. You should add your comments there (that is if you really did return). What AoC forum alias are you posting under?

Are you kidding me! Dude!!!!
Shadowbane PvP is moronic. Let's stack 50 people on the same spot and have healers spam heal while we chain cast/kill people! Oh and why does everyone in Shadowbane roll a channeler and a flying scout??? Cause they are severely OP compared to any other class.
Shadowbane is not hardcore. I love the politics of the PvP, but the combat is terrible. ToS and a Channeler in Shadowbane are almost the same class. Healers that can nuke as strong as a mage. And perma flying scouts that can kill stealthers from range is weak.
I wouldn't say the community is a 10, but i play on a pvp server. Take everything you gave a 10 or 9 to and put a 8 instead, that would pretty much be how i score the game. Aside from graphics, cause the graphics really do deserve a 10, no mmo can even come close.
I like shadowbane, but stacking on banes is the way to go....I don't know how many, but it felt like we killed waves of thousands of asians with three stacks of 30 each. It was a wash.
I can kill just about anybody with my aracroix scout(I think I spelled it right). Melee is weak, I love inquisitors, but I don't find him as effective as my Channeler or Scout.
I think a game like shadowbane is on the right track, one of the better attempts, they just didn't have the funds needed to make the game really awesome. The skills needed to be overhauled and there were supposed to be dungeons that never made it, but the variety of skills is great!!! I just wish they all worked.
I still think AoC is a better game overall, and it looks like FC is trying to get it right. They need to get the heraldry and political system of Shadowbane. Having guilds that can become nations with vassal guilds is awesome!

I've been hearing this a lot. Are we supposed to reward game developers for trying?
Craig: "Hey, guys! Sorry Age of Conan kinda sucks but we are TRYING our ass off!"
Fanboi: "No problem. Here, take my monthly beta money. DX10 is coming soon, yay!"
The way I see it, if a developer tries and FAILS, then it's time to move on and find some other developer that might succeed. It's this principle that our western economic system is based on.

Wow.......With that attitude I guess you don't play any MMO's. Shadowbane was epic Fail when it launched, almost as bad as DNL, but you stand by it eventhough it still has some of the same bugs it had at launch!!
If no one TRIES, then nothing gets better! Nothing is ever PERFECT! Especially in the realm of computer programming. AoC had issues, but all MMO's have issues when they release. The real value of a company is how quick they try to fix what may have been unforseen, or lack of foresight.
Dude take a vacation man, your pretty pessimistic.
The point about western economies is absolutely rediculous! The western capitolistic ecenomical systems has spread more wealth in the world than any other. Why the hell you think China has changed so much since it reacquired Hong Kong. They are finding a better way!! The current collapse is due to overregulation from idiots in the government who extorted many banks into giving bad loans to people who couldn't afford what they are getting. Take a macroeconomics class and post your results on a different thread.

The only reason why most (if not all) MMO's are crap at launch is because we as customers don't give a shit.
You think MMO's are the most difficult and complex things in the WORLD and it's IMPOSSIBLE for developers to give us a product that works? Nope. There are many areas in business that are way more difficult yet they manage to give customers fully functional, fully tested products.
The reason why MMO's are crap at launch is very simple: They get released too early.
WHY do they get released too early? Because most gamers don't give a shit and are willing to pay for that beta.
Look at Age of Conan for example. Investors got anxious and forced Funcom to release that piece of turd 1 year too early. If Age of Conan would have released 3 months from now, it could have been HUGE.
When you think about it, it's us customers that are to blame. The day customers refuse to buy pre-orders is the day we will finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately I don't see that happening any time soon.
EDIT: You are right about one thing: I DO need a vacation. I'm going skiing next week, yay

Good deal on the skiing trip!!
I still think that there is never a perfect launch for an MMO. Actually to clarify, there is no perfect MMO. Everybody wants something a little different. You've got a few main categories of players to appease:
1.PVP'ers
2. Crafters
3. Raiders/PvE
4. RP'ers
5.Casual Players
Obviously there are more, but trying to satisfy all those groups is not an easy task. I think one of the hardest aspects is getting a vibrant economy working for the crafters and players. Not to mention trying to get away from the standard UI that every game uses. Out of all the games I've played I really like the Melee combat in AoC. It has the highest learning curve of any other melee system I've played.
Blaming the customers is not fair. The company hypes their product. It's their responsibility to deliver. I ahte it when a company comes up short, but sometimes a game mechanic or concept just isn't practical and most of the time it has been hyped before being fully tested.
So what to do, support the games with a good core system and let the craptastic remakes use item malls until they die.
I wouldn't say the community is a 10, but i play on a pvp server. Take everything you gave a 10 or 9 to and put a 8 instead, that would pretty much be how i score the game. Aside from graphics, cause the graphics really do deserve a 10, no mmo can even come close.
Well, it is the safe route to knock off a few points here and there, but lets be honest.
Music/Score: When did a MMO last time get a Hollywood award for their soundtracks
Combat: Seriously what other MMO allows you to plunge through hords of mobs in the awesome way AoC allow you..
And so on.. Maybe you disagree with a few of my scores, but you have to admit that AoC have a 10/10 on several very good points.
Several of your 10's i wouldn't give that much, specially community but that depends, some people like communities to be feisy, trash talking and arrogant, in a Pvp environment, they find it fun that kind of competitvity, i could do with a less conflictive bunch and less drama :P
Music deserves a 10, morso than even graphics, wich in perspective to other games likely also deserve a 10.

dude, PvP vs PvE and RP-PvE are WAAAAAYYY too diffrent.
if you are on a PvP server, dont expect someone to tell you:
"and now, allow me to ease your pain my dear friend, how would you prefer to be sloughtered? with a double weild or with a blunt?"
hehehe just kidding, but i think your style is more like PvE or RP-PvE than it is pure PvP
Is this the first time you have raided or PvPed? Because the PvE raids are extreemly generic and the PvP system needs loads and loads of work. If you like sieges in this game you should try warhammer though, they do sieges 24/7 usually and it also has a 1.4 ish GCD so combat is identical. Thing about AoC is it does not do anything aside from graphics at an average level or above.
There's no comaprison between AoC and WAR.Warhammer RvR is boring as hell, the animations sucks, some Chaos spells animations are very ugly.In AoC every single hit sounds perfect and intense.
When my Warrior Priest swing his hammer I hear the "Swoosh" sound and when it hit the opponent it sound like an explosion + the bad animation and sometimes the spell does not trigger in time. When My Priest of Mitra hits I can hear the sound of the mail or Shield of the opponent blocking it,when I damage my opponent I can hear him suffer as he moans, when I cast a spell it triggers instantly.
In Aoc sieges you can destroy buildings and catapults and feel proud to have destroyed the enemy city.WAR RvR is always a zerg and if the server has not crashed, entering the city is just another PQ grind.
In the land of Predators, the lion does not fear the jackals...

I hear you and I said my community score would be the most controversial (9 of 10). I know many people have comments on this, but to be honest I have never bumped into any of these problematic situations. Right now, I tell you there is just a bunch og flowerpower hippies over in AoC loving their game . Well, maybe 9 is high... but it is up there. AoC community have a very positive vibe these days.
Edit: Check this out in example. A guy have started a thread called "The official I am rolling and alt and want to help Newbi thread" (or something along that line). forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php . Now if that is not helpfull and good community spirit I don't know. I think AoC community might be a bit better than many people belive.
the community in game can be pretty bad , i swear sometimes it seems like 8 or 9 year olds are screaming at each other or 16 year olds who are incredibly drunk (I love to drink but my iq does not go down by 50 points when i do) the community in aoc is about on a par with wow. that being said aoc is a good game and i agree with almost everything the op said, combat is the real reason i play aoc it is so much better than war or anything else with possible exception on coh or perhaps pvp guild wars.

I agree with you here. AoC combat is the cherry in the pie (already knowing graphics, animations and music score is awesom). The combat is just so fun... Even grinding mobs are fun. lol
While this is obviously a biased review, I think I'll try AoC once they get a free trial out. For the music, if nothing else. Edit: Or a buddy key thing, I guess those work too?
Brutus, come one, at least wait till you have tried the game before you gut me. You might even agree with me. Some of the other guys in this thread seem to think I am spot on (In particular on my comments about itemization, questing and feats/skills). Having said that I have never written a review before and this one is the only one of its kind. For your comment on that my review seem to be biased, I'd like to say that I am only using the scale. Wherever AoC is inventive and push the boundaries of what ever have been done before(in a good way) it gets a 10. I am not one of the guys that would give a 9er just to be safe (while the game totally rocks anything else out there). I don't undergrade just to be cool or to seek acceptance. My grades are what they are and they are dead honest. I think I demonstrate that, when I give crafting a 3/10. Only thing that saved crafting from that score actually are the new receipes they put in (Culture armors/helms and city armors.. The new gear both looks awesome and have stats on line with raid gear). I am kicking AoC in the leg also on other points, but you are right my review is overall positive. There is a good reason for it though, AoC is turning into one hell of a game. In fact, if they don't fck up patch 1.05, AoC can turn out awesome.
Last thing, I realized a few days after doing my review that I forgot to comment on the starting area Tortage. I did not like it, it was too densly zoned/instanced as well as the storyline was too tightly woven as in restricting what I could do. I only give Startingarea/Tortage 5/10 for those reasons. If FC stuck in another starting area I would up that score a couple of points as the starter areas simply would be larger and more interesting for those reasons, BUT I will never start to praise Tortage gameplay as some of the other guys here. Tortage was not that great in my book, but then again thats just my opinion.
That was a painful review to read. But I'll respect the almost viral attempt to resurrect AoC on these boards. It's amusing.
I think you really need to get over it, and seek help and tell someone where Funcom touched you. You will feel better about it.

I'll disrespect the almost viral attempt to bring the game down more on these boards by the endless amount of trolls that havent played the game since release.

I'll disrespect the almost viral attempt to bring the game down more on these boards by the endless amount of trolls that havent played the game since release.
i just posted on the wrong place sorry...
