My First day of Darkfall Part 2.

BelegStrongbowBelegStrongbow Member UncommonPosts: 296

Soo part 1 was basically the noob experience.  I have read everywhere that it is aweful and aside from the bugs and queu times and installation error i Loved it,  Its like getting your bearings in a new world,  taking off the training wheels.  It reminded me of when i played my first real MMO (since Diablo and Runescape are kinda not related); MMO (DAoC) and was completely alien to a UI. Cuz let me tell you, the Darkfall AI is pretty Alien and not in a bad way.  I have been thinking about swapping my Block key(V) with right mouse click,  the right mouse for UI navigation is kinda wasted when your mouse is your really tool for fighting.  I will try that another day i guess

So after I wrote Part 1 I jumped back in to the world finished all the starter quests and was just farming more gold at the goblin camp when Everyone in the area was alarming an Alfar group of about 10 were attack the Loriedain starter zone.  Loriedain is on the other side of the elf capital and I have never seen such an awesome capital.  Even if there are about 5 NPC's per city, town whatever the players are ment to bring these establishments to life and instead of me thinking how dead and barren these cities are,  It gives me more of a feeling that I the Player much more of a meaning.  Im now sopost to be these NPC's that are claiming theres wars and battles.

This does not mean I dont think the World is not Barren.  In terms of Mobs I think its fine,  I wouldnt imagine every 10 meters someone whos gonna eat you like all the other unrealistic MMO's that just make a whole army of different mobs that create a Agrro train when your running anywhere.   But they need to add some wild life,  Like those little squirles and lvl 1 things u see populating areas in other games.  Just some little flare thing.  DEF not important until like a year from now though lol.

Walking a VERY long distance maybe 5 minutes across town I came to a very awesome looking Octopus tree where the other goblin camp was at, this one with Shamans and different goblins from the last one.  So the mobs were like completely different almost in term of class of goblin.  Running around this tree for a good 10 minutes looking for the Alfar but they were completely gone, A large pack of noob elves were scouting for them.

I grouped with 2 people and we went to the troll Mountain Ruins northwest a good 3-5 minute walk away.  They put up a huge fight sending wave and wave of Trolls, And these things fire off some insane magic and big knockbacks.  We killed about 6 of these things in a constant battle with no rest but 3 more apeared.  My small group was on a ledge nuking and shooting when they knocked us all off, the fall took me half health down, (meaning it a HUGE FALL, darkfall gravity is awesome, u can fall pretty far and not get hurt. this is awesome for PvP, ill tell u why later)

The trolls jumped down after us and 3 of them focused all attack on me because I had the lowest HP, Smart huh?  I died but luckily these players have Rez, I still dont and will invest in it later probably.  After being rezed we headed back to town or the goblin camp which is on the way.  THey broke group and when i saw them head up the hill to the city I said My pacs only about half full from the trolls.  I turned around and walked up the small hill under the Octopus tree and WOW,  6 Alfar mounted on these dragon looking mounts were blank straight in my face.  My first encounter with mounted combat was a good 5 minutes of pure adrenaline.

I quickly remember from Paragus's mount blog(THANKS PARA) that they can only attack on the right side with there weapons.  I kept to the left and circled around this octo tree zig zagging through the branches while popping off mana missile into the pack causing decent AoE dmg.  Ofcourse they killed me and I lost all my Awesome troll loot that was a huge upgrade from the goblins.  Trolls drop about 10 gold each and alot of resources and started 2 handed weapons.  I had about 100 gold and was wearing one of my 5 sets of cloth armor goblins drop.  My first and only real death with loss of loot.  I ran back after getting my spare set and weapons out the bank.  There were 3 still there.  they took off b4 i could get a shot in.

So I got a new set of quests from the other starter Counsiler which are exactly the same but if im killing goblins anyway its just more gold and loot.  I bound myself to this new area because apparently this goblin camp was where the action was.  And it came again.  3 Single enemy races stormed in with there full loot bashing noobs and managing to kill some.  I on the other hand was having the most fun in this game yet, I learned to Clime the Octotree.  I was up in this huge canopy of a tree sniping down these guys all night.  The alfar caught on and stayed out of sight under branched but a Wolf guy(forget there name)  with decent loot didnt notice me.

I really Had to use the Arc of the Arrow to snipe him when he was running and I hit him from SOOO far away to death.  NEver in the history of MMO's has this been accomplished.  The view distance in this game is beyond the reach of arrows, I remember the gameplay movie when a archer group aimed straight up in the sky to launch these things.  There was also that elf in the tree who sniped that one guy,  Well this time That was me.  You can replicate anything u saw in that gameplay vid.  I am so pumped to play the hell out of this game.  To really be able to Snipe like that in a MMO.

Well Now for my rating I guess,  Folks, The only excuse I have for all the bashing of this game is just the game isnt what people are looking for.  It is certainly what i was looking for these past 10-13 years.  If you agree with my experiences and want them for yourself you will really take all these things that possibly could get bashed, and love them.  For example.  Theres a big hate against the sound and animations.  I love the background music,  Even the loading or queu music.  The music is meant to pull you in to the world and it does.

The sound effects like Mana missile are really not that anoying,  i can imagine it will completely go away when we all get new spells.  The spells the Goblin shamans fire are completely different with a deeper more charging like sound.  All the sound is just dandy,  I agree that it is dated,  it was definatly made in 2003-4 sound era but its fine,  It brings back memories of DAOC.

Ok well the graphics are AMAZING,  I have a very high end system and 2600-1200 moniter but I keep it at 1900-1200 so the UI isnt so tiny.  I always max out everything i can, shadows are really the only thing u can play with and they are the best shadows ever.

The animations are.... well if u went back in 2004, they would be revolutionary.  But now they are just Meh.  This is such a small factor for me because Really. Animations are so easy to implement.  And if your a troll about to BASH THIS STATEment.  U can not argue how easy it is for every MMO to date to Add EMOTE after EMOTE every week.  Christ I was breakdancing and raving in Trasa.  They dont even need to update these animations much,  Maybe spice up combat a bit so its not all vertical and horizontal slash, but w.e.

Final Verdict,  The game is completely finished and not in beta.  They are smart to control the player population for so many reasons i wont even get into.  O and I have not had that F key bug i mentioned in the last post.  I havent read of really any other bugs either in the chat bar.  All they need to do is squash these bugs,  get more servers, let more people in here, and FIX THE QUeU TIMES.  So they can start adding more sandbox content. Fix and build on there priority systems like Clan cities and Housing.

I would like to say In terms of client and installation for a brand new game.  This was so much better then the AoC launch.  Wow was AoC so much worst.  Bugs galore Client crashing memory leaks....  None of that in Darkfall, just that little repair and queu time.  The Insane 16 hour torrent is LAME. But im in EST New York time and am getting 110 solid ping constantly.  Have had 0 lag.

Hope you liked my first day story.  Im off to play Darkfall untll my eyes bleed and Get my awesome bengal tiger mount.  Im still looking for my guild The Sentinels.  PEACE!

OMG GUYS, i was just reading some other posts and I forgot to mention.. I have not Seen ONE Macro , Hack or exploit being used.  NOT 1.  Mb its because I havent really gone far out yet to explore.  Or maybe its because They are really crackin down today.

This was a big thing i forgot to say.  I guess u cant really get the details cuz its all underground,  But from my View point and vision.  Theres not 1 macroer to be seen.   I will learn more to come and when i join my guild and take this as a first day perspective.  I dont doubt cheaters are out there.  Just throwing my 2 cents about the issue people are having with cheaters.

Thank you for your insight on your first day of playing.. I've been interested in this game for a while now, and with the recent PARA Rants on this game with the City and housing, and mounts, and the previous ones... this is seeming more and more like a game I wanna play.  It's nice to see someone talk about their first day of playing, sounds like a day I'd like to have.  I'd like to hear more stories of your goings-ons as you discover new things till I can get my hands on this game!  Please, feel free to send me messages if you want to, or if you can peel away long enough. :)  Hope to see you in game sometime!

    Peace!

    +1

or use escape for default right button function.

Most unfortunate for you though you are an elf, therefore prepare to die a lot from the horde ;)

    Have fun playing OP  :)

Thx I've been waiting for a while for Darkfall and these posts are exactly what I'm interested in.

I wanna play Darkfall really bad but I'll wait for the queue things to go away.

My fragile mind can't cope with those.

Anyway good post, thx for the info and have fun!

The adrenaline part is very true. I have in my log i got ganked by a horse : (

But i have read that you can attack both left and right when mounted. You use the Q and E key to lean left or right, then attack.

most of the bashing is coming from fanbois of other games that really did fail hard: AoC, WAR. they're so butthurt they can't accept the idea that an indie company with a tiny budget could make a game that's actually stable, refreshingly different, & fun, which it is.

that's fine, but you would be in the minority. there are a number of obvious trolls claiming to have played the game but obviously haven't - referencing stuff that was patched since beta or a week ago etc is a dead giveaway. looking at post histories of trolls, most indeed were former AoC, WAR & WOW fanbois.

Will someone please take the OP to the lost and found at Wallmart, I think while chewing on a sucker, he lost his mommy...!

Darkfall has one redeeming feature:  The game world...!

Everything else is laughable, trite and done better elsewhere. This may be the worst mmorpg in history.

There's nothing wrong with the OP having fun, which he obviously did.  Just like JimSmith, he's chronicaling his experiences.  Their experiences and styles are different, but a mix of opinions helps those of us who don't play get a better picture of the game.

Both fanbois and trolls are wrong, its neither the greatest MMO in history or buggy unplayable garbage.Who'd have thought?! :D

If you can get past the bad combat and retardedly bad AI (sorry fanbots, the AI in this game is dreadful) its a really fun game to play which is a lot more polished than some of the true turds from the last few years.Comparing this game to AoC or warhammer would be an injustice as its much more stable and in my opinion better than both.

Darkfall to warhammer is like a chocolate log to a crispy turd, yet ill bet wowhammer had a much bigger budget.Conan has better graphics and character customisation, but Darkfall has a non instanced world and more stability.Combat wise,Id say conan edges it slightly but its close. Tcos still reigns supreme here.

If they actually populated the world it would be a big step up gameplay wise.

I still cant stand the "OMG you carebears cant handle it! stop complaining!" morons and if anything brings the game into problems, it'll be them crowing on about how everythings fine. This game has some glaring problems that wont go away by you crying your eyes out because someone is critical of your precious game.

Last time I checked WAR has over 60 times as many subscribers as Darkfall (Can't even fill a server yet because of terrible billing).

AoC has a rising subscriber base, by the way, and still has over 45 times as many subscribers as Darkfall.

Both of these games are making money, hence they aren't "failing" at all. I'd say Darkfall is "failing" pretty bad because they haven't even gotten a full server yet and probably haven't even made enough money to even pay back the cost of boxes.

    P.S. Fanboi mentality is bad.

DF has around 15K subs, WAR has a little under 300K, and AoC i don't know but i bet it's less than WAR. your maths are way off.

AoC & WAR cost close to $100mill to produce, DF cost less than 10 mill euros.

AoC and WAR are widely (and correctly) regarded as failures because they lost 50-70% of their original subscribers in their first few months, despite having been deliberately designed for a very mainstream market.

Your comparing population levels of games that have been out for over 6 months with a 2 week old game?  Also the two games you mentioned both lost over 50% of their initial subscribers within roughly 60 days.  The number of subs a game has does not reflect how fun it is, which is obviously subjective.  WoW has 10 Million subs, and I don't find it fun at all.   Why not just respect the fact that a certain type of MMO player is finding Darkfall enjoyable.   You aren't going to convince anyone that they are not having fun by posting on the forums.

i agree, but i can not see, not matter how much time passes, this game ever filling 2 servers, in fact i dont think it will ever open a 2nd.

care to elaborate on why you think the AI is bad? because it cuts and runs at low health? i don't know anyone can say DF NPC AI is bad with a straight face when the AI every other MMO is essentially "auto-attack until dead" with zero variation between mob types.

as for bad combat, well that's just too subjective. i don't think i could ever go back to any MMO with auto-targeted, auto-attacking combat again.

sorry but in most games, the humanoid npcs will cut and run when low on health. LOTRO and EQ2 (2 i tried recently) both have this.

Dont they run away in a straight line though?   I havnt played either of those in a while but thought it was more of a straight retreat.

The mobs in DF, at least the ones I was fighting last night (first day) were moving in ways that made them hard to hit, they were scrambling away rather than just making a charge in one direction to stop then be hacked down.
