I find it slightly surprising that some people use the same name again and again.
I like naming characters and can spend ages thinking about it. I'm not saying my names are great because to you they'll be nothing special, but I have fun finding new ones. It's like naming a child or a pet.
If I know I'm buying a new game I start working on a name. I usually consider it in tandem with the race and class I'm going to play. I have a little book I keep with some general info on all the characters I played - It's got 25 different names so far.

I'm similar to that aswell. I usually don't rehash a name unless I really really like the name which is rare. If there's a new mmo coming out soon that catches my interest I go to the drawing board and start thinking of names.
The story of my nickname is simple, despite most of people never notice the double 'e' or think it is just because the normal name is too much popular.
That's not true and here is why I ended up with it:
1. The nickname is absolutely not related to Final Fantasy.
2. I wanted something related to the concept of immortality (the sumer legend of Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk in search of immortality), because it is the very big human dream and we have found it in the MMOs (yes, we never really die in a MMO).
3. I used the double 'e' because since the first Myst (1995) I loved the D'ni universe and I found the name fitting well with D'ni language. It was originally Gilga'meesh.
Unfortunately most MMOs around don't allow apostrophes in names, so it became just Gilgameesh in Anarchy Online (my first graphical MMO). I was happy at the end of 2003 to use the original name in Myst Online: URU Live, the place it was meant to live in.
After that experience, I simply decided to use always this nick and almost all my mains are nicknamed Gilgameesh or with little variations when needed. The only game where I never used it was EVE, just because it really don't fit well there. In Lotro, RP Laurelin server, it become Gilgamees, fitting well with RP naming rules. During the cb of AoC it was Gilgmeesh.
Growing up my little brother and I made up soo much stuff while playing with toys, I usually just use a name from some of the child hood "lore" we created.
MMORPG played in order played: Sims Online, WoW, CoX, EQ2, LinksRealm, LOTRO,TOR...and counting
I've played with the same name Teala since like 2002. I think it is because of my love for Tea. Especially southern sweet Tea. That is where my name is derived from I suppose. Before that I was going by Shaelaura, and Valkira. Teala though is my fave and I doubt it'll be changing any time soon.
Stealing names is sad. I cry blood every time I see another Drizzt, Raistlin, Mugabe, names from anime or other TV series or anything else I might recognize.
Heh...Like BRCLOUD..brSephiroth...xxxCloudxx..xxxnarutoxxx...xxxlegolasxxx .. just to name a few
Considering how much time some people put to making their character look differnt I'm surprised at how little some of those same people put in making their name, especially in the cases of numbers.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Yeah , that's very true. I find my name has more meaning to my character than It's appearance to some degree. If I just randomly name my char some garbage name it bites me back later , because usually I don't feel like playing that char anymore if It's name is bleh.
If it's a sci-fi game I use Jord Torey, it was a fairly random name I thought of for a Star Wars RP I used to play in. If Jord is taken, I try Torey, if Torey and Jord are taken I use Jordaniel (said character's full name). Although if the game allows a first and last name I use both of them. That is if it's human, if not I try my my best to come with a fitting name. I only broke this when playing CoX in which I use Latin words that simply describe my character's main traits.
For fantasy, it depends on the race. Most Elvish characters are Telthalion or Telron. Telthalion/Telron Rohircil if they allow last names. My dwarves are pretty much always named Olokul which I pull from a D&D random name generator. Human names are either Jord, Torey, or Jordaniel if need be. For Orcish names I use a convention that the name should have harder sounding constnants, such at G's and T's, accompanied by A's, W's, L's and R's (Grahgtor is a possiblity of one). If nothing else I pull up my trusty d20 WOTC D&D random name generator!
If it's an FPS or racing game, one where I'm playing in-universe, I use Nickelpat.

It's really suprising when you logon to most mmos and see how bad most peoples character names are >_> Although truthfully there really is no difference , atleast to some degree. Because at times I find there is something name about simple names , a complex name / non mainstream name doesn't always equate to something better than a popular and simple name. I actually prefer simple names.
I usually go with Raiiga but when that's taken I try Zorko, and if that is taken I try Liedler. If all of those are taken I just try to make something up that fits the character.
One of the best name generators out there. Covers pretty much everything from elves to hobbits and actually comes up with quality names. www.allanime.org/
found the name Argohen floating around in a book somewhere and it has stuck with me since. Gorgeroth is my evil alternate name to Argohen. If those are taken its basically follow a stock standard naming convention for certain races (dwarves will normally end in than or something like that, orcs have a harsher ending like esk)
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Well, my name's are usually something I use in any other MMO, so if you see a character named, maybe "Dasboots" (pure example), there's a good chance that if you see "Dasboots" in another game, that its me.
But, when originality fails me, I grab some book (depending on the genre), and pick a name. For WoW, for instance, I use names from "The Wheel of Time" series of books (by Robert Jordan), to get names, or variations. Sightblinder, Heartsbane, Balazamon (couldn't put a " ' " between the B and a sadly), are all names I use on WoW.
Also, if I'm bored, I'll use names from animes, games, or anything else random. for instance. My frost mage in WoW is named HitsugayaTou (Hitsugaya Toushiro from bleach), though I also tried to make him look somewhat like the character as well.
Kirnan and Corrand are wholeheartedly my own, even though as names they are out there (google), but they popped into my head, and the existence of them really just says that one can be original without being original.
Other names end up being a bit situational, but Kirnan always comes first.
My blog is a continuing story of what MMO's should be like.
Same name since 2003 FFXI day 1. If the name is Taken then I move servers until I find one where its not taken. If the name is taken in every server (has only happend once) I don't play the game unless the option for a last name is available, in which case I go down the list of Mexican and spanish historical figure last names and pick one.

You like the name Calintz that much huh? ^__^ heh..I usually have a pool of atleast 3-10 names that I would like to use for my char before starting a new mmo.
I use the same 4 or 5 males names and a few females names. My main 3 probably I created myself and the rest are from of my favorite books that often are available. It is funny that a couple of my names I created many years ago, I ended up finding as a character in the scifi / fantasy novels I read.
Very rarely my 1st main name is used, but sometimes it is taken, so I move onto another server unless I am stuck with friends on a particular one.

I usually try my last name first.
If it's taken, I try any name that has a french origin. :P

The first name I ever used was timberwolf, simply because I admire wolves.
Other names I take from obscure fantasy or sci fi novels.

For me its either this name or a combination of my real name and my wifes. That way its more personal and less chance of being taken.
I try for either Scrubby, Scruby, Scrubbi, Scrubi, Trippin, Trippen or, Spectator.
Sinderion as last name. Erandur/Hareya as first name, which came from the Oblivion handbook. Or Annatar, which came from a lotr name generator.
Never changes. ^^
