You are so spot on. People just need to try it now, so they would know... And actually this is what we see happening now. More and more people come back. See the improvements and hence all these discussions now. It's good though.
I think you are just confusing server merges for people coming back. A handful of people have come back, it's hardly anything to celebrate about. Just look at Xfire numbers.
And there haven't been much improvement in the last couple of months. It's still the same game only with less bugs. The core problems why people quit the game, like instancing and lack of endgame, still exist today and Funcom hasn't said anyhing about fixing them.
The way I see it free trials are Funcoms last hope. Unfortunately since DX10 is late, the trials are too. They were supposed to be in February but here we are still.. paying for that monthly beta fee and praying for a miracle.

-or its maybe you who is confusing server merge with more people joining in !
-yes there have been a lot of improvement
-DirectX has nothing to do with anything, AoC now looks 10x better than the mmo you are playing, so DX10 is not critical to anything.
Actually limiting the trial to Tortage would be a smart move by Funcom.
Lets be realistinc. We all know Tortage is the only part of AoC that is 100% finished with voiceovers and such. Rest of Hyboria is not nearly as polished and the quality of quests drops down after Tortage.
Why show potential customers the "real game"? Lets show them the only part of the game that is fun and lets hope they fall for it and buy the game.
just in case you have forgotten, this is an M rated game, and the community is kind of mature.
that kind of sarcasm wouldnt have been funny even if it was the right time.
um.. what?
Timshenko! That's marketing u know. Even though the rest of the game is fairly built. Tortage is a very good introduction to show newcomers and to help them get into the spirt of this game.
Actually Tortage is very misleading. It leads you to believe that the game in general is like that stage of the game, which it clearly isn't. Funcom has said multiple times that the Tortage quests can be considered a completely different game. At launch I enjoyed the hell out of the whole area. After you leave Tortage though, it's a different story. Even the main quest is watered down. You basically get told you can rez.....even though you've been rezzing over and over.
Granted, I haven't played the game since November, but no game company is going to fundamentally change the game in only 3 to 4 months.
Now, if the whole game was like Tortage, then yes, hands down this would be one of the greater MMOs. Not the best mind you. But one of them. As is however, the game gets incredibly boring.
i have to desagree with you, yes Tortage is a great experience and introduction to the game lore, but i think of it much like an RPG, while in tortage, i barely find time to group up with people because i spend most of my time trying to do the cultivation quests which are solo quests, (without talking about the bazzillion other quests during day time).
i personally enjoyed the game more from lvl 20 to 40, its only after leaving tortage that the real game begins. i am currently leveling a Cimerian alt, ihe is at lvl 30 ish and overwhelmed with all kind of quests, so if you didnt like the game as a whole, thats a personal choice, and after all we have diffrent tastes and thats why there are many MMOs , but saying that the game is boring is not true.
Unless they added a ton of new content to the Cimmerian starting area, the quests are nothing more than "kill X number of bad guy" quests...over and over. And again, 20-40 is only 20 levels. You still have 40 to go. I have a lvl 80 guardian (Dioran) on Set that's still waiting to raid Onyx. Did they ever fix it? I don't know.
A lot of people are saying 'well, you should try out the game now" as if money grew on trees. I (sadly) went back to playing WoW after playing Warhammer (40 RP and 40 BO) and Age of Conan (80 guard and 45 HoX). Oh, and I can't seem to buy Darkfall for some reason. So, I'll stick with WoW, for now, until something comes along that doesn't promise "potential" for my money.

as for Onyx, i never raided it, so maybe others will be more of help to answer this for you.
however, im right now lvling a Cimerian conqueror which happend to be lvl29, i find there is a lot of story going on behind the typical "bring 20 heads of such" and "kill n number of such"... quests, also very challenging, i had to group with 35+ lvls in order to did those quests (yetti side).
but if you didnt like them that could only means one thing: you didnt like them ! which is a personal taste, and i cant argue with you on that.
from my personal point of view and taste, WoW kind of audience and gfx are not an option. square shapes really ruin my experience no matter what im doing. and having the feeling that everything is already there and not going anywhere also makes me whish for more, AoC satisfies both my eyes and ears first, and as far as gameplay, crafting and itemization, i already said it and i say it again, AoC is not yet the best in any of those, but that does not mean that the game is totally broken or unplayable, and watching Funcom fixing and adding to the game everyday by direct communications with the players on the official forum gives me both the statisfaction of being part of a community that influences the game's future and the feeling that the game will no doubt change and new stuff will be added and therfore more places to explore and new things to experience.
You can't argue about itemization. Again, I'm speaking from when I played but everyone looked the same. The only difference in gear from lvl 40+ is the color.
You could easily skip the harder quests in the game. Gear wasn't an issue, so doing the harder quests for the rewards weren't a priority. Not to mention groups were hard to come by. And I started playing at launch, which should be an indication about how sparsely the game is/was populated.
Now, the dungeons were spectacular. No doubt. The pyramid and the big ass instance (.....it had a lot of zombis, again forgot the name) was epic as hell. But, finding groups to do the content was a bitch and a half. The game had ( I use the word HAD because I really don't think the game will recover from it's initial start) a lot of potential, but like I said, I don't waste money on potential.
As for WoWs graphics and itemization, I agree with you %100. Everyone looks the same. But the thing is, instead of doing good graphics that are wasted because of mem leaks (yes I played during the time of mem leaks) Blizzard decided to keep it simple and work on what they could do. Keeping it simple, and doing it perfect is better than doing something complex and getting it half right anyday in my book.
