Having played Ffxi for a few weeks on a span of 2 chars I have to say of the late my ffxi return has been a positive one.
If there was one main reason i quit FFXI back in late 2004 is was more because of its elitist community. Now comming back ive seen a pure 180 on the community. Thanks to a few features the community is a very mature and fun one to be part of.
As i was lvling my daughters character I did stumble on a redmage named Darkhalo, who saw me struggling with a mob and got an add , managed to save me. I was invited to a group randomly and it turned out to be a dual boxing gil farmer (there are still a few but the vast majority have been destroyed). He was just randomly inviting people and as soon as you would appear to his location he would engage into a fight . Lucky for me and the other poor soul who got invited to this group, darkhalo stood around n healed us then warned us about the dual boxers. Never to accept a random invite as the rest of the community will ask you if you want to join a group before inviting you. So we watched the poor dual boxers die a horrible death and proceeded on making a group to get some exp.
The next day I met Krazycora, yet another redmage who asked me if i needed help with my subjob quest as i was 2 lvls away from it. I accepted and noticed i was not the only person he was helping. I met another new person Wysphier who was lvl 19 yet no sub. Krazy helped us out and wysphier had to leave. woot my subjob items obtained without me having to ask. But then the awsome happened. Krazy mentioned that he had to go since he wanted to get a group to hit lvl 60 so he can do his next lvl quest. I asked him if he would sync with me and do some book quests in the dunes as he only needed 2k exp. So he did and we did a book quest and killed some mobs ect. I helped a High lvl gain a lvl XD.
This is just a few of the many encounters i have had and few of the many groups i participated in.
The lvl sync is one of the reasons why the community is much more mature and helpful and much less elitist. lvl sync does much more than you think. if you didnt have money to upgrade your armor n weps you can easly go lvl in an area where you can take advantage of your exsisting armor.
Now there will be always a few asshats, but even those are hard to find.
Dispite that my return to ffxi was to be a causal one and figure out ways to be very self sufficiant i cannot deny how fun this game acutally is when you are in a group and do the things you need to do.
So to those who decide to try this game, remember , get into a good ls and dont hesitate to let people know your new to the game. this will help them help you more.

Awesome post
I was listening to the Limit Break Radio podcast and how puppet masters were needed for a certain fight and I was astounded. My ex linkshell leader had actually quit the game over the fact no one wanted his puppet master at end game and now Square makes a creature impossible to defeat without one...
My point is one of the absolutely aggravating things about this game in the past was that the community would decide that certain jobs were irrelevant and I always thought this was a shallow and silly thing to do. But now it seems there's all kinds of ways people play the game with all kinds of jobs. :P

Always good to see positive newbie experiences.

FFXI Character: Satimasu
FFXI Server: Valefor
FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil
im not sure from which server you started on 2004, but the community on my server has always been good. Unicorn Server ftw!
Good post and welcome to Vana once again. As a player of 3+'ish years now I still look back fondly on my gaming experience when i first started and the thrills of discovering new areas and meeting new people. I go through phases on how helpful i am to new players (it gets old after a while) but if i'm ever in a pt in the dunes with someone with no SJ items i like to try to help them out as i was helped so many years ago.
EVE - Sharvala
FFXI - Shazamalicious
Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro

Would that mob be Ob?
What you also have to take into consideration that those people who were the most elitist of the bunch got tired of playing the same crap all the time and creating a new character isn't the most ideal situation in this game as others. So those people left. Others who were like them tried those undesireables and learned to like them and just they got more receptive to them.
I do have to say that they are a lot more puppet masters running around Asura these days. It almost angers me since I needed to level it in hiding. I'd like to think it was the community seeing me take down an EM as a PUP/DNC and /doze-ing that opened people up to the job
What server did you start on max?
He's on Kujata.

Yeah part of the main reason why I quit in 2004 was actually the big elitist community as well. I hate those players who always judge other players based on what classes they choose to play" "Oh sorry, we already have 1 Dragoon or 3 Dark Knights, we can't take you in, but if you have a Bard you can join the other 40 bards"
That kinda thing really pissed me off about HNMLS.
I am happy that SE added things to the game that every job can do and made end game much more casual and much less job Bias.
The moral of the story is: Red Mages rule.
(Yes, I used to be one. :P)
I'm sorry, but I really dislike people like you, very much so. The whole "elitist community" argument is downright astounding in terms of how much its used, while not being true. Yes, there is an "elite community", they are in all games, even outside of the MMO genre. The way you preach makes it seem as though the game is bogged by them, which is entirely not true. On average you get 1-2 "Elite" linkshells per server, so what 50 or so people per server? Out of thousands? I would hardly call that a "mind numbing majority" of the community to actually quit the game over.
There is a reason why games have "Elite" clans/guilds/linkshells and thats because players enjoy playing with others of their skill/progression level, if you want to throw the word eltitist around I guess thats something that you are going to do but you are entirely incorrect. In all honesty, it sounds to me as though you are one of those people that cry vocally because you were turned down from one of the top shells on the server you played, and thats just kinda silly.
Every MMO, even every competitve game(FPS/RTS), has clear sets of players. I mean lets take a main stream competitive game right now like COD4, would you honestly expect to go up to the leader of a team thats won multiple tournaments and expect to get in without ever playing the game? No, you would not. There are teams just for people like you, as such there are linkshells for people of your progression level.
I'm not saying theres something wrong with being at a different point in the game, but honestly, its time to get over your little stage of butt hurt. I guess I could be classified as an "Elitist" as my linkshell had pretty strict recruitment policies, 3+ jobs(1 DD / 1 Mage / 1 Support) with one being near fully geared and mertied as welll as a pretty lengthy "trial" process. Yes, we didn't allow the average player in, but that allowed us to reach our goals efficently, without much drama, and do what we wanted to do the way we wanted to do it etc, if you didn't fit our recruirements we would give you recommendations for shells on the server in which you would fit better. You would hardly get in without sea access, seeing as thats something we did heavily. Saying that people are "elitist" for it is quite obnoxious really,
