DT or HOX

QbicQbic Member UncommonPosts: 35

Dear ladies and gents,

I am subscribing again later tonight but am a bit torn between two classes being DT and HOX.  I played AOC a week after launch and then quit due to the well-known issues the game had.  Since a few weels I have read quite some positive posts on various forums which kinda made me curious to try the game once again.  I have always been a fan of the Reaver/Shadowknight/Dark Templar class/lore but I also read the class has a lot of issues.  Would the DT be viable as a first class for a new player or would you recommend another class?  Also the HOX seems quite nice being a hybrid caster with a fair share of dps.  I also like the fact that one can turn into a demon.

Any tips/pointers are highly appreciated.

Have a great day.

Cheers,

Q.

Both classes are touchy for starting with. The HoX with it's sword wielding melee, but very weak armor is a difficult class to jump right in with. The DT is VERY weak at the start, then as they go up in level thus do they become a force to be reckoned with.

PvP wise both classes are weak as well. PvE both are FUN to play.

If grouping is a concern, then look at Conqueror, Bear Shaman or PoM.

Stay away from Rogue classes also.

Best bets for starting...Necromancer, PoM, ToS and Guardian (not in that order...think of it as Necro = pet class, PoM for heals, ToS for DPS and Guardian for tank)

Think of it this way...how much of a challenge do you want?

    Cheers

I'm glad you've decided to give the game a second chance. I haven't been disappointed. I have played noth classes up to the mid 40's. I'm no expert by any means, but I like the DT. DT's are a bit of a pain to spec, and can feel pretty weak until you get defense stance in Tortage, but I've had no real problems leveling so far. I hear tehy are underpowered for PvP though.

HoX is fun. I found them a little fragile while soloing, but their AOE and DPS made up for it. I really enjoyed the class' diversity. I've had really great FPS and latency since the last time I played, back at launch. I think you'lll really enjoy it.

Oh I almost forgot, if you like tanking or being more of a frontline kind of fighter that can take a few hits, then DT is your man!! MAssive DMG, go for HoX

I'll tell you one cool thing I remember about the HoX, or atleast I thought it was cool.  Back in the day, well not really but, having sneak/inv was very important.  Being a HoX, because of it's base archetype, you could sneak longer than being a tank type.  The reason is because the drain isn't as bad for a mage type.  You could get stamina reagents that countered drain, but I never got to a lvl with a tank type that would completely counter sneaks drain.  Which with HoX, you could do this by lvl 10 or so.  Also, your charge is based off of your mana instead of endurance.  Alot of your moves do depend on your mana though, but at the time you aren't totally helpless.

This may have changed, but this is mostly the good points I remember about a HoX.  This was the last char I played before I quit the game and it was one of the funnest I played.

I think you will get more entertainment value out of a HoX. Several folks I know really enjoy their time with them.

At this moment   HOX> DT  both pve and pvp

both classes start out rough, as DT's supposedly being soldier class to handle more mobs, its missing ( and still counting for god knows why) and not so functioning features, tack on to learn how to stance dance,  you would have to spend more time learning how to play the DT and its shortcomings more than having fun, added with the lack of CC's the DT class has, a stun and a slow, you have to plan ahead on your tactics ahead of time instead of just using them from the start. damage output wise, no contest, no point even dicussing it, DT it just isnt there for now.

as for HOX in quick summary, in the beginning, again its harder to use, and you wont have as much health compared to a DT (not being a soldier class), but becomes insanely stronger the more you level, the difference shows much more. when hitting max level the arsenal for a HOX goes like this,   3 CC's ( fear, stun, root, all of which last 6 seconds each and can chain to CC lock some one to death) ,  damaging AOE aura, and slow yet powerful melee attacks to compliment your AOE aura damage buff.

Hox's in Siege and mini games , again no contest,  a Hox and literally go into stealth, wait for a group of enemies to come in and CC root the whole group when they come in range before they can react. again add the fire damage aura ability which is passive, they can run around all day and let their fire damage do some of the work for them, it is a strong defensive when fighting a uphill battle and fustrates soldier classes trying to get a hit on the hox, let alone if they try to go into Frenzy stance (stance dancing) and get hit by the fire aura, it can take a strong chunk of health in turn.

if you wish to try out the DT however , do it with the notion that the class is far from its real potential, and if funcom ever, ...EVER fixes it is up in the air.  play a DT now just for the challenge or later when you get use to the other melee classes and game mechanics to prevent being stressed and leaving the game.

Thanks for the input ladies and gents.  It is really appreciated.  I will try a hox first and then probably a Tempest of Set as I do like what I read about that class as well.  Somehow all the classes seem interesting so I will no doubt roll quite a few alts as well.

I am really looking forward to my new adventures.

    Cheers,

Looks like you've already decided, but I'm gonna flap my yap and say I like my HoX alot.  Once you get Hellfire Breath to activate instantaneously through feats, you just tear through people.  I assigned it to my F key and now It's like a "free damage" button every 4-5 seconds.

It's alot about personal taste though, I think.  I tried about 6 or 7 different classes, some of which seemed fun, others flat out dull; the HoX appealed to me instantly.  The changing to demon thing is a pretty cool bonus, but the HoX is fun to play even without it.  I wish they animated it better, though, especially since they don't even animate you change back to human at all.

It seems all the classes provide for a vast variety of play styles.

  • I've been levelling up a DT alt and I truly believe that the class is made out to be worse than it really is.  I think part of it's bad rep is that as with any soldier class it takes a good amount of skill and experience to play in PvP(and there are a LOT of "tankhead" soldiers who are convinced that their soldier class is gimp in PvP because of it), and you really need a full PvP spec(again, PvE tankheads not catching on to this).  But in the end I can succeed quite a bit better than the "worst class in the game" line would have you believe.

That said a HoX is an excellent, excellent choice for PvP.
