Will you build a rig just for new MMOs

I just built a rig for the new MMO's coming out.  maybie im crazy i dont know. but honeslty i built it for the Star wars MMO coming out in what like a year or two lol.  So i had to ask my fellow gamers if they would build a rig just for a specific game  or am I the only crazy fool out there to do somehting like that.  I dont even know if the game will be good, but it is being made by Bioware.  Bioware has never let me down before.

As you can see im very excited about  the game, and cant wait.  I hope sony has nothing to do with this one.  I dont want them to get anything from it.  Yes I am still a little bitter and if your into gaming you know why.  Thats a whole drug out long story needs not to be braught up and im sorry.

Getting back to the point.  If you where hyped up about a game coming out would you build a new rig just to play that game.

First,  now seems like an OK time to build a new system.  It seems so cheap at this point.

Second, no.  I have built a system for MMORPGs, and I will never do it again.  Aside:  I am not subscribed (paying) for any MMORPGs at this point.  I may be out of this industry for the foreseeable future.  I play MMORPGs for alternative reasons that I think the now current mainstream MMORPG player plays.  I enjoy freedom.  I enjoy true, unique character customization.  Exploration and travel in bizarre but fascinating worlds.  Community.  I do not play to raid; I do not PvP; and I do not play for linear content.

Third, generally, I think you should build a new rig not in a year or two in advance but closer to the game's release so you can buy better components for cheaper.  The components you JUST bought might actually be obsolete but most-likely cheaper by the time the game is released.  You could have even gotten a superior system in a year or two than you got one now.

Overall, and in summation, buying a system a year or two in advance of a game's release is probably foolish.  I am not saying you are a fool.  I am saying the decision was a foolish one as far as I am concerned because of (1) cost savings and (2) technological obsolence and (3) you might not even like the game and also (4) time-value of money.  You could had the money you spent in an account (stocks, e.g.,) and collected (a) dividends and (b) growth in a year or two.

I wouldn't build a new rig for new MMo's comming out.

I have a good one at the moment, and if anything, I'd just upgrade.. Maybe add some more ram, newer video cards? I've got a pretty sweet motherboard right now that doesn't look like its going to need any upgrading atm, although I would like to upgrade my processor in the mere future.

    Let me say this:

One of the worst purchases I ever made in my LIFE was buying a super fancy, ultra advanced video card.

Yeah i would, and i would tell people if they asked.  Hell i wish you could just upgrade consoles, those companies would save more money that way and would be able to use them longer.

I used to upgrade once a year but with todays hardware, majority of games don't really push them that hard so i use whatever i build for a few years then upgrade.

I wouldn't buy a rig just for MMO's...there aren't nearly enough decent MMO's for it to be worth it.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

Of course not.   If an a game(any) doesn't have lowish system reqs A) I'm not the target market  B) the developer doesn't know the market  C) I'm almost certainly am not the target market.

I'm talking about any game not just MMOs.   RTS and TBS based games are not very intensive in anything but CPU time and maybe RAM.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I've bought a computer just to play Neverwinter Nights 2.

With Obsidian handling the succession of a Bioware creation (NWN 1) I've learned to pay more attention towards such matters. They lacked the forsight (perhaps legality) to put the cleave/other melee animations in NWN2. Not to mention mods are slow coming.

Very dissapointing for one pursuing the path of the fighter. One who believes there is much diversity to be found in the D&D fighter.

I've learned my lesson on pre-builts (BTX case FTL) and slouching on efforts towards building PC's. (ATX FTW)

The moral of the story is to thoroughly study the technical mechanics from said game and computer before plunging forth.

Just thought I'd provide a partial self-roast at my expense. (hold the ham though) Enjoy buttered popcorn.

Its good to see im not the only one.  what is with gaming that makes us do stupid stuff like this.  Im just glad that i do need this rigg for other than the game i built it for.  I really needed a better pc all around but probly not the hog i built lol.  i really appreciate all of your alls input.  The good, the bad, the ugly, and the honesty lol even if i didnt like it. I guess sometimes the truth hurts aye.

just for a mmorpg? With todays MMORPG coming out? No way

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

New mmo's that come out keep touting new graphics and all but they soon figure out in order to keep the latency down, you cant have the graphics.  So in the end, there is no need to build a smoking hot rig to handle these mmo's.  Of course, I already run with a 8800GTX 712mb ram (epeen flex) so I'm good for a while.

When a piscating wizard floods every thread I can understand why people leave.

    Nope.

I wouldn't build a new rig, upgrading the GPU should be enough. I shouldn't have to worry about that anytime soon though, 8800GT is still going strong :).
