Quick question .

Hey all, just have a quick question(or 3) for you knowledgable folks. Some friends and I, mostly all multi-year veterans of pen and paper D&D, are looking to load up and start the game soon.

I've played WoW and LOTRO for a good bit now, so have the advantage of being a tad more familiar with MMO's. None  of thes guys have ever done an MMO before.

I guess the main questions I have are, what's a good friendly server(s) with decent population , is there a good collective source for game strat guides ,game info, and just general help, and is this a good install choice for what will probably be once a week or so casuals like us, who will have a mostly consistent group, but may end up PUG'ing some content as well?

    Hello .

D&D Online is much different to WoW, so still you may be very suprised. Just don't let this spoil your fun, different doesn't mean worse. For me, it's even better.

DDO is great for roleplaying, if you want to focus on group relations, play adventures, etc. No troll will spoil your fun, because if you won't allow someone to group, he just won't ever disturb you : ).

If you want some specific information about game and it's mechanics, check this site. It's accesible from DDO US homepage, ddo.com, or this direct link:

    compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Compendium_Home

About servers... where do you want to play? DDO US, DDO EU, or DDO Japan (who knows)? I play on DDO EU, which is run by Codemasters under license from Turbine. If you think about DDO EU, servers are really equal, but may have different kinds of people : ). I prefer Keeper, but that's entirely subjective and may not mean a thing to you.

Remeber that DDO is as far from other "open area" mmos, it´s instanced/dungeon based game and the character generation is very nice you can build pretty much anything u like, but it is not at all like PnP ;) (character generation might be but the ol "fighter-wizzard multiclass" for example dose not work in the game). I wont spoil anything for you it´s a nice game and you and your friends will have loads of things to do.

Sure it does. It may not be the uber elite build that rules DPS, but if built right and with the right equipment it can be done and done well.

It works but not recommended for somebody new to DDO. You just need some experience with the quests and spells before you make one. fighter/caster combos are some of my favorite characters in DDO.

Ah yes what i meant was somewhat of that, and if one would go that way the only sensible way would to go for the warforge and wiz with a small splash of fighter, what i meant is the wiz/fighter elf kind of build wich imho can´t tribue to a grp as they would only be a mana sponge for clr/healers, and at the end of the day most people seem to want to have builds that aren´t "gimped".

I wont go to far in to different builds bc there is a varaity of em that works even thou some of em are gimps in my eyes.

There are a few builds other than the WF'd.

Popular Fighter-Wiz builds would include elven and drow heritage specializing in longswords (elf) or rapier/shortsword (drow). Splash a Paly + monk or rogue for Sorcerer or Rogue + Fighter or Ranger for Wizard.

Currently I have a Spellsword Sorcerer scheduled for 2Paly2Rogue 16 Sorc max Charisma & UMD + insane saves from Charisma Divine Grace.

The main thing to remember is you don't want to split a caster equally on levels with fighting levels. Ideally if you go 18 Sorc or 17 Wiz and mix 2-3 levels of a class you can earn access to all spells and still have a very good fighting prowess. My build will only capture level 8 spells, but I'm ok with that because he'll be rolling with Twilight Mithril or Icy Raiments and be very effective.

What's more important is the player who's controling the character rather then the build its self.

I play a Sorcerer which was spec'd for Nuking, wearing armor while being able to melee.  I ended up getting rid of Weapon Finnesse as the +8 I got to hit from it didn't mean much when I was still hitting on a roll of a 2; Divine Power for the win!!

I used to play AD&D and this system is anything but that.  The controls, game play and environment is tactile, dynamic and immersive.  You are not going to get something this good from another MMO unless you prefer slow paced button mashing which this game is not.  Also, there is a learning curve to DDO so patience and a little attention will go a long way.  ;)

DDO plays more like a strategy fps hack-n-slash then it does a turn based button masher. The game play can become very intense in many situations.  All things said, there are still a few flaws with the game and the primary deterrent is going to be potential bias more then the games polish.
