I want to give Mythic my money: But months later: Performance Issues...

donjndonjn Member UncommonPosts: 816

I posted this on the Mythic forums and now here. I am desperate...

I really want this to be my game. I like Warhammer very much, but I can't get over the performance issues. I have tried everything since release and quit playing back in October because of the performance of this client. I believe that this engine needs to be updated as it is too CPU heavy.

I recently came back for the 10 day invite..

Here is my system:

  • AMD Athlon X 6000 Dual Core 3.0 GHz
  • ATI Radeon 4870
  • 3 GB of RAM
  • WIndows Vista

I have Warhammer installed on a separate drive from the OS.

Here is what I experience. Every now and then the game just chugs. Either when loading a new zone or whatever. The engine just feels heavy. I get stuttering from the constant loading of textures.

Here is what I have tried:

* Played with all in game settings including turning shadows down, lightmaps, windowed mode, etc, etc

* I have no antivirus running

* Reinstall of Windows XP

* Install of new OS on Vista

* Updated video cards and processor drivers

* Full defrag of all hard drives

* Ran the game on higher graphics card settings in an attempt to "force" Warhammer to use more of my card

* Deleted all temp files in Warhammer directory

* Upgraded from 8800GT to 4870 video card

* Virtual memory on different hard drive than system

* Vista wont really let me apply Vsync..

* Tried other tricks including turning off unneeded Windows services

* Ran without firewall

* Ran without router and plugged directly into computer

All other games run great. In fact, games like Fallout 3, Crysis, etc run better. Heck, Age of Conan runs way better than Warhammer, and the graphical comparisons are far apart.

I thought for sure when I came back to the 10 day trial things would be better. And actually in the large cities I did see a slight improvement. But I do feel that this game engine is for the birds and needs updating.

And for all those who say that the game "runs fine" on their computer, it is because you just aren't noticing the stutters. Some of us have great eyesight and can see flickering on a CRT monitor when it runs at 60Mhz and screen tearing drives us nuts.

Until this is all fixed I feel that I just can't justify paying Mythic...

I know you said it isn't what you want to hear, but... It runs fine for me. ;)

The odd thing is, I did get hitching like you mentioned for the first few months.  For some reason it seemed worse in empire than in the other two zones.   After one of the updates it all just went away, except for the extremely sluggish performance in large keep battles.  The only way I could fix that was to turn spell effects off for other players... and that cleared it up immediately.

    i play on a P4 3.0
    7800gt (AGP)
    3 gig ram

I get lag in forts and in city pqs - basically in any zone with a lot of people (Orvr in CW sometimes is pretty dismal)

im like you, i recently came back to find....that the game runs fine. my computer is a year or 2 older then yours i think, im not sure ive always been better with software then hardware, and you wanna know the big difference between you and i? i turned down all my video settings. in a game like this performance > looks and ive never had any lag outside the problem child areas that everybody has lag in like cities and fortresses

    Define "fine" people. Please.

    Jesus...

Update your drivers, update directx, uninstall the game completely, reinstall from trial download or retail dvd.  Turn settings to HIGH, low settings = worse performance.

fine ill define what i meant when i said my performance is fine.

currently i have all my settings set as low as possible for the obvious reasons.

    smaller scenarios are lag free

    larger scenarios are lag free

keeps are fine, was in a defense action with over 80 people and no real problems

cities lag me a bit but nothing too major

fortresses...honestly who doesnt lag in fortresses?

no if you will excuse me i need to laugh at ulberon

I had the same problem u did, until i picked my warhammer folder and copied it on the same hard drive than the OS just to try it, and the diference was like night from day, i got a 50% performance improvement.... Try it, u dont even have to uninstall WAR just copy or move the folder to the main disk... That and creating a profile in the nvidia control panel for war and forcing AA made the game run faster (as strange as it seems).

My CPU is a AMD X2 4800, had a Gforce 8800 GT at the time, 4 gigs of Ram and Vista 64, so i doubt it's really that CPU heavy...

Edit. oh and you can also try to turn off the virtual memory completely...

Try to install AMD Dual Core Optimizer and all that stuff

I got an AMD 6000+ and had a 4830 and the game played fine.

I got a GTS 250 1gb now from NVidia and its the same thing.

Try to disable LIGHTMAPS  and SPECULAR.

Also try setting Effects to Balanced and sliding the Cache setting to Large (or the far right setting if its not called large :P)

Let us know how iit goes....

Also 4gb would help a lot for Vista.

Must admit dont see a problem on either of my machines...

intel quad q6660@2.4/8gb/gtx285 black edition/vista 64 runs smooth with 16xaa enabled...

Macbook with xp runs with no hitching and minimal loading ...

I have similar problems to the OP, i recently re-subbed WAR and found it not running a smooth as i would expect.

I also can run other games smoothly, i have an Dell XPS HC with a quad core Intel chip, a GTX280 and 4 gigs of RAM running with XP.

I can run AoC smooth and when you compare the graphics with WAR you expect WAR to be much smoother but it is not.

Made me give up and cancel my sub......................................

I might try copying the war game folder as recommend in a post above, as i can recall that my performance when i first started playing was better than it is now, and i think it was on the same HD as the OS then. Now it is on a different drive.

Okay, let me be more explicit.  If you are using the same client you downloaded since beta/ early access, COMPLETELY UNINSTALL IT, INSTALL THE RETAIL DVD VERSION or the trial version.  It fixed 90% of the problems I was having.  Also, low settings = worse performance than high, it has been this way since beta.  Just turn off shadows.

I know this sounds bizarre but what network card are you using? Some people had issues with certain cards.

I can remember which ones exactly but someone else might know.

MMOs played (In order of how much I've liked them): Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Vanguard, City of Villains / Heroes, Guild Wars, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa, Anarchy Online, Ryzom, Final Fantasy XI, Matrix Online, RF Online, Rappelz, Hero Online, Roma Victor

    Okay I fixed my issues.

I have a dual boot system. I booted into XP and ran Warhammer with 4xAA and 16xAF and Vsync ENABLED. The game runs great now!

    I know what you mean!

The game usually runs fine most of the time..(30-50 fps) but it "stutters" every once in a while. Now it may not seem like a big deal, but once you start getting in battles and such, it can become very annoying.

And honestly, Age of Conan does run better.. =D

But, I put a lot of trust into Mythic, so I believe that they will iron things out eventually. I mean really...was DAoC perfect when it was released?

WAR seems to be a bit wonky.

I know I lag more on Minimum setting then on Medium or high LOL!

I just set everything to medium and play.

I chug sometimes in a ORVR area but never in scenarios or PQs.

    Playing: EvE, Ryzom
