I suggest getting MORE than 512, I have 512 and I wish I had more for those times when there are a million people casting spells and other stuff on my screen.
I would recommend at least 512Mb of DDR. As for graphics card, here a few not-too-pricey and decent graphics cards:

I personally only have 512Mb of PC3200, Athlon 3200+ Barton (OC'ed), a 120Gb SATA HDD and a GeForce FX5900XT and the game runs great at maxed settings.

Linux is free.....if your time costs nothing.
The great thing about World of Warcraft, is that unlike other MMORPGs, the system requirements are low. That being said, in order to advise you on what upgrades would be the most helpful for you, the following information would be greatly helpful:
What operating system are you running?
What video card are you using?
How much video RAM does your card have?
How much system RAM do you have, and what speed?
What type and speed of processor do you have?
Finally, what is your upgrade budget?
If you have any questions about how to find this information, please post and I will clarify
Hell, I'm running it playably on my Duron 750 with 128MB Ram and a GeForce4 MX400. Doesn't look so hot, but it runs playably and looks passable.
