Why I un-subscribed from Darkfall.

HolymonkHolymonk Member Posts: 24

I read the features that Darkfall was going to have and I was excited to try this game.  Sandbox-MMO, City-building, Sieging, Full loot, massive seemless world, Ships, Dungeons etc. All sounded good. If the servers are not down or you are not stuck in a queue the game does run mostly fine.

I live in Australia and had a constant ping of around 390 and this did not really affect my pvp on a general level. So lag was really another non-issue for me. I never got spikes or lagged out. The only problem was once they let too many players in then the server would start to stuff up and this would require a restart which would make the game unplayable for 2-3 hours this happened to me twice.

As for gameplay a lot of stuff is there but the truth behind it all is its all gloss. A lot of the spells and skills that are in-game dont actually do anything. Skill increases hardly give you any increases and is only really noticeable at the 25/50/75/100 level ranges. It gets a lot tougher to go from 50-75 and then tougher again to get to 100.

Myself and my guild spent a good few days powerlevelling me up to 75 weaponsmithing to make some decent items however the weapons I could make only added 1-2 damage to my swings. (e.g instead of a starter weapon hitting 12-14 a rank 40 weapon hitting 16-18).

Magic is just a macro fest until you hit level 50 lesser magic in which time it is then a grind fest aswell as a macrosfest for reagents so you can get to 50 Greater and then branch out. Magic is rumored to be a lot stronger in the later levels (once you hit the fire/air trees) and I can see everyone ending up a mage because melee is pretty useless when someone can just nuke you for 2-3 times the dmg per hit from a distance.

Archery is pretty much like melee I guess arrows hit for about the same as your swings except use up a bit more stamina. O and you have to aim.. which isnt too hard with archery. if I could do it with a 400 ping im sure it would be even easier with a 40 ping.

General skills such as sprint, running, swimming, riding, crouching, resting etc are pretty much pointless and dont give very noticeable improvements. I dunno if having a better rest level even improves your regen rate while resting. it feels like it does jack shit.

Mounts are good for travelling but pretty much useless in (solo) pvp against someone who knows what they are doing. They do work effectively in groups of over 3 if you are just going around ganking people. When you jump off your mount you have to unspawn it which takes 2 secs during this time anyone can jump on your mount. Attacking enemies whilst on your mount is tricky business even more so if they just have a bow out shooting you while avoiding your long turns, then you find your mount is dead because you couldnt demount with your enemy around. also members of your own faction can kill your mount with no penalty and because the game is full of griefers expect people to kill your mount just because they could and it was funny...

This game is next to impossible to do well in solo. You will need a guild. One of the major dissapointments for me was if none of my guild was on and i wanted to go and get some cash. There was only really 2-3 options I had and if you are on a far away island you will have to go all the way back to the starter towns to be able to get to any type of soloable content. Plus killing stuff is just not fun. The mob ai was done with good intentions but it just wasnt done well.

Solo pvp is ok enjoyment wise but definetly not really economical. you can go and kill players solo yes but most of the people with ok gear will be in groups, on mounts and will pretty much run away if they dont want to fight. Good pvp fights (risk vs reward) are hard to find.

The amount of asshats in the community always totally amazes me. I thought that maybe in game it wouldnt be as bad because people would want to protect their name ingame and not be known as complete idiots but I was wrong. The amount of people that run around acting like 12 year olds after a pack or 2 of wizz fizz is just amazing and reminds me that I am on the internet with people who just have no respect. The people in game are like the people on darkfalls forums. Complete douches. This was a major contributing factor to me leaving the game. The community is 10x worse than wows. (sorry to bring that game up)

So why did I unsub? Well I gave Aventurine a chance to get better once they released but it is beyond rediculous now. They have absolutely 0 feedback to the community. They have not said shitall about what they are fixing/not fixing. They do patches in which there is no noticeable changes/improvements they dont even have any god damn patch notes or a list of what is being looked at. Even if they do fix everything there is to fix the game still has major issues (exploiters/afk macroers/Hackers). Yeh sure its fun for a bit when you get in but you soon realise that so much shit is broken and not working it really gets to you.

So if you want a bit of fun for a few weeks i suggest you at least try it out. Although its not worth the amount of money it is. It may occupy you for a bit. But once the thrill of a newgame wears off you will find yourself standing in Darkfall and really wondering why you even bother playing.

    Hi Monk,

Nice overview, I won't go in to too much detail but one thing that certainly struck a cord was your reference to being on the internet and people having no respect for one another, or even themselves. This is really starting to grate with me latley and I'm sorry to hear Darkfall has been the recipient of copious amounts of these types of people. Have faith though, there is always KOTR, AION and what not. Cheerio.

On thing to remember however, the internet is by and large the biggest and most abundant collection of self-proclaimed PRO's and knobs this side of commerical community hubs, it's always best to remember that when some people traverse the internet they feel as though consequence is of no real concern to them, hence the attitude of some people these days whilst online.

As much as I appreciate the feedback, I do hope that you're ready for the incoming fanboi flames and comments like "This game is not for you".

I posted a fairly well written negative review of Darkfall similar to this one and I was accused of being a liar and not having the game.  It is amazing how if you agree with them you get props from everyone and if you disagree you get called a host of names including a liar.  I should sue for libel.

(e.g instead of a starter weapon hitting 12-14 a rank 40 weapon hitting 16-18).Unless you are using the rank of weapon matching your skill you will not see the damage increase as such you also break the weapons very fast in comparrison to the correct rank weapon for your skill.  EX:  20.0 to 29.9 Greatersword skill means use a RANK 20 Greatersword.
Magic is just a macro fest until you hit level 50 lesser magic in which time it is then a grind fest aswell as a macrosfest for reagents so you can get to 50 Greater and then branch out. Magic is rumored to be a lot stronger in the later levels (once you hit the fire/air trees) and I can see everyone ending up a mage because melee is pretty useless when someone can just nuke you for 2-3 times the dmg per hit from a distance.Magic is not a requirement to gameplay.  It takes time you also have to specialize in magic and limit yourself to lighter armors.  Of which Higher ranked armor sets have excellent protection and you can always pickup a bow and shoot the caster who is standing there for similar damage.
Archery is pretty much like melee I guess arrows hit for about the same as your swings except use up a bit more stamina. O and you have to aim.. which isnt too hard with archery. if I could do it with a 400 ping im sure it would be even easier with a 40 ping. Starter weapon to starter weapon bows hit for a greater amount from the start.
General skills such as sprint, running, swimming, riding, crouching, resting etc are pretty much pointless and dont give very noticeable improvements. I dunno if having a better rest level even improves your regen rate while resting. it feels like it does jack shit. At this point im questioning why im even responding due to the fact if you dont notice regening faster while in rest I have to wonder how much else you are not noticing.  You know you can use stam pots, health pots, etc yes?
Mounts are good for travelling but pretty much useless in (solo) pvp against someone who knows what they are doing. Simple.  DO NOT RIDE YOUR MOUNT IN A TOWN.  I know someone like you who as I stated before doesnt seem to notice anything.  Also you have a full 360 degree mouselook on a mount.  Its not hard to dodge arrows and magic.
This game is next to impossible to do well in solo. You will need a guild. One of the major dissapointments for me was if none of my guild was on and i wanted to go and get some cash. So you want to be able to solo  the entire game when you stated above the city siegeing was one of the draws.  Then you get mad when the AI is smart enough to run for help or dodge your magic or arrows?  um... lol
Solo pvp is ok enjoyment wise but definetly not really economical. you can go and kill players solo yes but most of the people with ok gear will be in groups, on mounts and will pretty much run away if they dont want to fight. Good pvp fights (risk vs reward) are hard to find.

(sorry to bring that game up) When there is full loot and you can kill anyone, anywhere. Be prepared for people to flex their epeen.   Thats how it works.  I know  you like your little safe haven where no one can kill you and as such people dont talk shit.  Thats not the nature of a full loot no safezone game.

Im going to give you a command you dont know about.  /gm_help type complaint here.    With this command I can report a speed hacker, macroer, etc.  Try it oh wait you cant since you dont play.  when you report a PERSON they are there in anywhere in my experience from 30 seconds to 5minutes.

Im sorry that happened to you. Unfortunately DF fans are some of the worst the MMO community has to offer. Hope they come to thier senses and take thier rose colored glasses off for a while and look at the real harm they're doing...keeping potental players away from the game and having many leave.

Again i'll reinterate that I hope the game straightnes up soon or it'll be too late.

Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
    Playing EVE Online and AOC.
    Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

If the game was good we wouldn't be here talking about the game.  We would be playing it.  I don't want people to feel crappy about buying a game and suffering through it for 5 days before they quit so I want to warn them.

When Blizzard releases the next monster success MMORPG check the forums 2 weeks after launch... I bet there wont be a thousand people browsing the forum in prime time.

    Not quite true.

    He said this:

"Parsing is a useful skill, and post history is a wonderful feature. He is one of those types, along with schloob and several others, who are habitual liers and deserve ignoring.

There are several people on these forums who dislike Darkfall and deserve listening to, but towelie is not one of them."

He never said you don't have the game. I think you misread it, unless you are talking about some other thread altogether.

Just curious... did someone tell you it was a "fairly well written review", or is that your opinion of it?

Tell me what was fairly well written?  My long review?

If you don't think that "along with schloob and several others, who are habitual liers and deserve ignoring" implies I am a liar then you fail like DF.

Of course he suggested you are a liar. There was no claim that wasn't said in his post.

But, he did NOT say you didn't buy the game as you claimed in this thread. You claimed he said you didn't buy it. But you just lied on him, which makes his statement either true, or you are a bad reader. You never claimed you misread his post still.

    Therefore, ironically...

  • schloobschloob Member Posts: 160

Well, I don't know what I could have lied about.  Do I actually love the game and instead of playing the game I love decided to write a bad review?  He is implying that I do not have the game, period.

Either way I am done with this.  He removed his libelous post and I am happy again.  I don't care if people call me a douche bag or jerk or loser or whatever but posting something that you expect people to take seriously when you are an elite member of the community is a bit overboard.

Knowing that this post will bump the thread is alone a painful thought... but it's close to the top anyways, so, whatever...

I can see why he would think that APEist said he did not buy or play the game.
APEist put schloob into the same category as TowlieFTW so it would be natural to assume that the "He hasn't played the game, so he can't tell you." applies for him too.

The OP hit on my reason for quitting, but came at it from a different angle.

One of the real selling points of Darkfall is that it is full-loot FFA.   The problem is that neither skills nor weapons do very much (as the OP said)... the problem with this is that a person with their newbie (no drop) weapon is very effective.   If you are doing something 'risky' like pking people or engaging in large scale combat where you are likely to die.... there is no reason to wear armor or use anythign but your newbie weapon.  What this means of course is that well over 50% of the people you kill will have no loot on their corpse.  That fact completely negates the biggest selling point of Darkfall ( ffa full loot).

Would you rather fight people with your best gear and not be able to loot them?  or

Would you rather fight people naked with your newbie weapon and not be able to loot them (because they are naked/newbie weapon)?

With the way gear and skills are set up in darkfall now, it would actually be better if they made all gear 'no drop' because then at least someone would use something besideds a newbie weapon.

That is the main issues, but the exploiting and macroing were the other major reasons i quit

I don't think I can be any fairer than agreeing with schloob on his claim that he was inferred to be a liar. That is crystal clear.

I also think I couldn't have made it any clearer that schloob was not telling the whole truth about the incident. Now again, schloob could have simply stated "My bad, I misread it. But he did call me a liar", but instead schloob wanted to boost the incident in his favor and drama up the thing. And by doing so, again ironically proved the point APE was making, lol.

It is not my job to make excuses for schloob or Ape either way. The fact that you could assume schloob could assume it natural to think that it was natural is non really relevant either. To someone carefully reading that post encounter without a bias either way, it's pretty clear without assuming anything what happened.. simply by reading it.

You know the saying.. "When you assume, you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me". I think it's pretty relevant here.

But I'm pretty done with this drama performed in three acts.. it's boring.

There is no need to try and make it look complicated with your last post. It's not really that hard to see what APEist was implying. I'm sure even APEist would agree and still stand by his statement :p

This I doubt. People aren t lining up to buy it anymore, sure theres some but waiting is getting old for most now. I know quite a few people saying screw it I ll wait for a game that has a company that wants me to play. Even though I warned them all about this sub par game in the first place.

After the latest patch, the game was running great last night with only a 5 minute queue time. My buddy and I just returned from a week long adventure running around the main continent... hiding in bushes crapping our pants as guilds of mounted dudes ran past without seeing us... ganking those who were vulnerable, seeing some sights, etc. I'm having a ball in the game.

The game is still under 30 days from the release.

OP, I harbor you no ill will, but the real reason you unsubscribed was because you didn't have the patience to see Darkfall through its evolution (or devolution if you prefer).

You should do what I do: Wait until the release stabilizes. I have lost no money, I get to see screenshots, read opinions, hear negatives and positives and ultimately become informed.

My advice to you: Do not join MMOs immediately after release unless you are willing to be more forgiving.

Not that I mind, but I thought you frowned upon that. Maybe I'm just assuming that though.

Sorry But I did have rank 45 in greatswords. Thus I could use a rank 40 weapon without the extra durability loss and full use of the weapon. And the truth is weapons and other items do not give a significant advantage in pvp. Yes you will beat players wearing nothing. But you wont beat 3 players in nothing.
As far as I am concerned better armor gives a very very small decrease in damage for example full banded gives like a 5% reduction. Magic will be a requirement in endgame (when people get there) The dissapointment for me was that a lot of the spells are broken or next to useless while some are going to be overpwered. The fact that Aventurine is in control good luck seeing a fix for those in a year.
So your proving my point? Melee is underpowered.
Maybe I didnt explain rest enough. What I meant was that A higher rest skill than 0 will do jack all. I had a rest skill of 70 and I noticed no Improvement from 1-70 in my rest regen rates. Of course rest works as a skill but the higher the skill doesnt seem to impact on it.
Simple.  DO NOT RIDE YOUR MOUNT IN A TOWN.  I know someone like you who as I stated before doesnt seem to notice anything.  Also you have a full 360 degree mouselook on a mount.  Its not hard to dodge arrows and magic.

Of course you wouldnt ride your mount in town but it is very hard to dodge arrows from close range. Instead of implying i am a scrub just stop look in the mirror and think about what you are saying. Magic is easy to dodge, arrows = not so easy. My main gripe here is Blues can attack your mount with no penalty. And horseback combat is practically pointless unless you out number your enemy 5-1
So you want to be able to solo  the entire game when you stated above the city siegeing was one of the draws.  Then you get mad when the AI is smart enough to run for help or dodge your magic or arrows?  um... lol
Did I ever say I wanted to solo the entire game? No I implied that They need to make the solo experience more accessible  for people who may like the game but dont have time for hardcore gaming. Improved solo areas would make the game better not just for solo players but would bring out more 1v1 pvp. City sieging should be guild vs guild. The AI is broken. I now can see you are no longer talking points but are just exagerating now to make it look like I know nothing. Sorry you are blinded from the real problems.
You are just proving my point here. The community is mostly like it is because of people like you.
Im going to give you a command you dont know about.  /gm_help type complaint here.    With this command I can report a speed hacker, macroer, etc.  Try it oh wait you cant since you dont play.  when you report a PERSON they are there in anywhere in my experience from 30 seconds to 5minutes.
Used it 5 times not one response? Weird that hey?
So if you want a bit of fun for a few weeks i suggest you at least try it out. Although its not worth the amount of money it is. It may occupy you for a bit. But once the thrill of a newgame wears off you will find yourself standing in Darkfall and really wondering why you even bother playing.

Responses in red where a response is needed.  This person has no clue about the game and I highly doubt is at the skill level stated.  Lets see pics.

Responses are in Green. This guy is not looking at the game from a neutral point of view. His too blinded by the newness of it all.

Anyway main reasons I left are

Armor and Items not impacting enough on how powerful your character is.

Most players dont even pvp in their good gear because it doesnt give you that much of a boost anyway and is uneconomical

    Broken skills and spells.

Uneven combat system and just unenjoyable swinging, shooting. Shitty animations etc.

    Trolling idiotic childish community.

Aventurine as far as im concerned will never change the way they communicate. I believe they created a game which is just too big for them to handle and have over streched themselves with what they promised and what they could really achieve. Maybe if they cut the project to a 1/4 of what they created it would have been handable..

and many other niggling issues I have with the general game. Crafting is boring and rediculous. No wonder people afk macro.
