Will EQ2 Ever Get PvP?

nonjonronnonjonron Member Posts: 139
What are your thoughts?  Do you think EQ2 will ever go the way of EQ1 and open PvP servers or incorporate PvP??   I note that the Gamespot review notes the lack of PvP as "surprising".   Any ideas on when or if this game will get some PvP?

    We don't want it.

    Go play Counterstrike, Unreal etc.

    That wasn't the question.

I think it will just because so many more people would play EQ2. Well at least I know I would play EQ2 if it went PvP.

But on when I have no idea..

Hopefully in 6 months or less.

    At the most a year.

I hope they do it faster then City of Heroes is doing it with City of Villians. I am actually looking forward to playing City of Villians.

I'm guessing they will open a PvP server within a couple of months, then open more based on activity.

    1. Yes I think so.
    2. Sony doesn't tell us sh!t so there is no way to know.
    3. My guess is implementation of a pvp ruleset server by Nov2005
    4. But that is a total guess (see point #2)

About 50% of players I've polled on the Guk server say they want pvp (most are thinking more along the lines of dueling). About 10-20% of players I've spoken with say they'd be interested in playing on a PVP ruleset server. In my experience from EQ1 between a fourth and a third of those who try out a new pvp-ruleset server actually stay.

It's my personal opinion that there WILL be pvp in EQII due to the larger than projected number of players already ingame. More people = more support for special ruleset servers which in turn justifies the added cost/hassle (pvp servers are a HUGE hassle for everyone involved in their creation and then maitenence). Thus if 3weeks from now the retention rate in subscribers is high you can expect pvp in the next six-months. If it's moderate you can expect it in a year. If it's low you can go play SB, WoW, DnL, etc.

    Just my opinion.

Does anyone think that PvP will actually be introduced as part of the existing servers?

I found some building in qeynos that's name had a hint of arena sound in it, and a sign on the door reading "closed for renovations" sounds like an arena for me, as for a PvP server i dont see it happening, the class balance would be terrible, where as in PvE classes are all equal, in PvP certain classes would just be worthless

Calamities are of two kinds: Misfortune to ourselves and good fortune to others

I'm pretty sure they will implement PvP in some form or another. Probably as an expansion, sort of a book of discord you actually buy. But as for when, there's no telling.  SOE enjoys their money, and if they implement PvP they will bring in a lot more players, thus more money.  I think they are going to do Duels/Arenas because then it won't upset the game that much.  Those that want pvp will have it, those that don't want it don't need to participate in it.  There are no complaints about people waiting for you to finish a fight, and sneak you when you're resting. I don't mind the game without pvp, but I think that it would be fun to test myself against others just to see who's the best. image

i think they may just open a pvp server separate from the others after a while. im pretty sure the reason they didnt do the pvp was because they didnt want those type of customers. they really tried to make this game with no griefing. because it has no pvp (yet), locked combat, etc. personally though, i hope they never do, i hate pvp and hate the customers it brings with it (bunch of immature bastards who think they are cool).

PvP isn't only about griefing. Im part of a roleplay group and not being able to fight against our fellow enemy roleplayers really kills any chance of roleplay and immersion.

I don't like PvP and will be happy if it never makes it in. I hate that if it does then will have to listen to ppl complaining about how the classes are not balanced for PvP. I could not handle DAoC on my computer but I was getting tired of class balancing even though I did enjoy RvR. Having a character change multiple times for balancing is bad but with PvP seems to happen even more.

that may be true jhughesy, but with the good....undoubtedly comes the bad.

I know your concerns about class balance.  My Wiz on Sullon Zek was level 56 when they finally nerfed him good.  Some of you EQ1 players may be familiar with that issue.  Basically, casters were limited to doing something like 40% damage per cast, regardless of spell level.  At that point I quit EQ1.

My new view on class balancing in PvP is radical I admit.  Basically, I don't think the developers should do any rebalancing at all on a PvP server.  My reasoning is pretty simple:  you're never going to get the classes exactly balanced any way. Furthermore, every player has access to the same classes in the game, so what's the point?  Anyone can choose to be any character they want, why do you need them to be exactly equal in PvP?  Everyone knows a cleric is a healer and will not be able to compete with a Necromancer one on one.  He's still a cleric though, and lots of players are still going to want to group with him.  I would have no reservations about choosing to be a cleric on a PvP server even though I know he would not be a strong PvP contender.

I want PvP because its more competitive and adds another dimension to the game.  That does not necessarily mean that all classes need to be equal in PvP.  After all, not all classes are equal in soloing or battling undead.  Why do they need to be equal in PvP?

I say SOE got it right with SWG. You could go covert or overt to choose wether or not you wanted to be PvP. How they could implement this into EQ2, I don't know but I think it would be a good idea. I think it would be cool to put some sort of "revenge" factor into the game. I just think it sucks when people abuse PvP and make other peoples game experiance suck..... L2.....

    ROFLMAO

    Here's how you see it:

"Say boss... We were just going over the game design plans and we need to discuss if we're gonna include PvP or not"

"Are you insane man?! It says clearly in your design brief that this game will cater solely to the finest MMO players in the world! The creme de la creme of the cream of the crop. Do you think we want the kind of riff-raff associated with player vs player combat? Absolutely not! How dare you insult our loyal customers in such a way?!"

    Here's how I see it:

"Say boss... Shall we include PvP?"

    "Is there money in it?"

"Oh sure... A survey taken by MMORPG.COM showed that the majority of MMO players cite PvP as one of their favorite game features"

"Then so it shall be! Everquest II SHALL HAVE PVP!!"

"Great! But... uh... there's one thing... It's... kind of hard to balance PvP and PvE. The guys in back aren't so sure they can pull it off."

"OK. Forget PvP, and put an extra $5,000,000 into advertising the game. If people end up hating it and leaving the game, we'll rush a broken system in just like we did with Jedi."

"Ah yesss.... Jedi...... MUHAHAHHAHAHAHAAA!!! *rubs hands together*"

EQ Live PVP was a problem. People would level down so they could randomly PK players. EQII should either A) Have designated PvP arenas or islands or B) Not have it at all.

Uncontrolled PvP in EQII would be disasterous.

sorry, i wasnt aware my choice of music had anything to do with maturity /sarcasm off. im sorry i hit a nerve, but if you ever played L2 then you would know exactly what i mean. they would find ways to exploit just so they could kill you and gloat over your body saying stupid things like i owned you and im l33t, even if you werent trying to fight them. if i wanted people like this in a game i was going to play i would go back to playing that crap in a box game L2.

I have a lvl 52SpS In L2 mainly for pvp reasons.

Point is. They shouldn't make it as they did in L2, one should be able to challenge you for a duel and you have to accept for anything to happend. Another way to go is the popular Arenas, they work great aswell for people who wants to pvp.

That should be it. Resent I bought EQ2, after close beta testing it. Cause it's a wonderful game. Excellent graphics! - much better than L2 in it's own way. It's simply wonderful just go explore for the beauty of the environments

i think EQ2 will have pvp and not just a server, its set up for pvp...one good city vs one evil city...they should play it smart and just make certain zones pvp like AO so those who want to pvp can with thier main character, and when they dont want to they dont have too, pvp should never be forced, but it should always be an option w/o having to create a fresh toon

and actually easy way to balance classes...make pvp team based like in GW

With regards to your first assertion that they may eventually open a special ruleset pvp server I agree with you.

You are mistaken however in assuming that they excluded pvp because they wished to exclude a potential customer base on the grounds that they are a bunch of "immature bastards who think they are cool". SOE doesn't intentionally throw away $$$ and I don't know of a single large corporation which does. PVP was excluded from EQ2 because the dev/pub teams assigned to it understood that beating the release date of their stiff competition this year would make them more $$$. PVP unless the game is designed around it can only be implemented after the PVE/mechanical aspects of the game are functioning relatively well and thus would have pushed EQ2's release date back months.

Does anybody else find it funny that a guy in a guild named Desolation who enjoys playing games based around violence and killing progressivly nastier things is so emotionally frail as to "hate" those who might be able to harm him in some way? ::::16:: Kinda sad IMO but hey that's just my opinion, I dont enjoy hurting people IRL and if you can't handle adversarial confrontations in a fantasy environment I really don't want to interact with you at all. And that goes for anybody who will generalize me as an "immature bastard" for enjoying something a little more challenging than he can comfortably handle.

If Gamespot have paid any attention to the official fact of EQ2 for the past year they would of seen the "there is No PvP being built into Everquest 2 this game is designed as a PvE game".  For anyone who's like well I'd play if there was PvP or they will open a pvp server, who the hell would you pvp?? Your own city members? There's few people over lvl 20 and no one can even really get out to the enemy cities without doing the betrayal quest in the first place.  The zones are incredibly huge which makes travel a long long process!  The game so far leaves very little room for pvp to go along with the story as far as Open PvP.  As for the "they'll open even more pvp server when blah blah" um..everquest  has like what 4 maybe 5 out of like 20 of them and they all have different rule sets.   None of these rule sets would work in EQ2 other than the city versus city dealings, though im sure they might come up with some opposing city guild things for city vs city, the time and date could be a year maybe 2 years off.    Guilds are working for presitge in the city so im still trying to figure out if guild wars would work, maybe if it was opposing city guilds.    As the game stands from what I've seen its Very hard to visualize PvP working properly without a whole lot of mechanics being built.  I dont support open PvP in anyway, I dont' pay to get my ass kicked by someone who has no job, lives off their parents and stays home all day.  Which happens to be most of the PvP players I've dealt with in the past on games like UO and Lineage II.  Im not saying all PvP players are bad, but to be honest guys 75% of PvP players are rather immature or they're kids who play alot of Unreal tournament.  Roleplayers that are PvP's atleast choose their targes on basis of a story point between them and the other player, thats not the case in most pvp.

    Anyway rant over :)

The Arena section btw is for the warrior Class quests, its a strickly instanced zone area, has nothing to do with there's gonna be pvp there eventually kinda stuff.
