If I suddently realized that I can "zoom" out and watch myself run around from 10 feet away would be pretty scary.
Wait... you mean you CAN'T zoom out IRL? LOL WHAT A NOOB!
I've been living in TPV since I was like 2 years old. It's just easier, since I can see behind my back and thus lessen the chances of getting a surprise buttrape.
So......being buttraped after seeing it coming is more enjoyable for you?
Don't let the title misdirect you, I am one of those individuals whom are waiting with insane-googly eyes for MO. HOWEVER, there's a fatal flaw in what the developer's have planned for MO, and that would be ultimately restricting a player's playstyle by their viewing mode. Yea, if you haven't gotten it by now I'm talking about First Person View restriction planned for Mortal Online. Sure, it's inovative to "bring it back into the genre of MMO's", but it's the wrong move for such an appealing game. People don't like being unable to see their characters, it ruins immersion along with the overall feel of the game. How would someone like me know anything about MMO's you might ask? Well, I've been around since the launch of EQ playing MMO's almost constantly since then...so yea I've seen pretty much all of it, and I can say for certain forcing your players to play your game in First Person ONLY is a very bad idea for an MMO. I mean seriously, have any of you ever thought of WHY FPV went out of style for MMO's when it first came out? It was only popular with a VERY small audience, and even then most of them admitted that after awhile they got frustrated with being unable to see around them. In the end, if nothing else works, it's the fact that practically EVERY popular MMORPG before MO has been third person view. Do you honestly think people whom are coming from WoW/Daoc/WAR/AO/EvE/EQ/EQ2/Lotro will be very welcoming of being told how to view their character in an MMORPG and NOT an MMOFPS? Well, I can tell you right now that I do since I've been asking around with popular MMO guilds from these forums and others about this very same question, and I bet you'll never guess the answers I got about it ....needless to say I don't need to go on much further with this discussion.
-Third Person view is a requirement for a game with such scope as Motral Online, anything else will kill this wonderful game. I'm sorry if you want "new innovation" in MO, but I'm sorry...forcing people into FPV only and delimiting their immersion with their character = FAIL
So sanbox gameplay isnt enough for you? You sem to have endures many MMOs wich only offers restricted gameplay. And now when you do whatever you want, you whine about some thing as pointless as the view?? And you havent even tryed the game yet either. Dont forget its the seame for everyone. So if i was you, i would begin to play as many FPV games as possible to get used to it. There is NO other way of dealing with it.
Maybe you have not thought that the game may very well be built around this view. Try it first.
The view is important to some people. I know I'll be reluctant to even try the game considering it's going to be using first person view only. I've never once played a first person RPG I enjoyed. The Elder Scrolls games and Dark Messiah come to mind as some of the more popular ones. I just do not have fun in first person, watching only my hands swing a sword or stab with a knife.
It's not absurd some of us ask for third person [and] sandbox. And I just can't see how this game's combat will be any different from any other first person RPG. There's only so much you can do with either view.
Wait... you mean you CAN'T zoom out IRL? LOL WHAT A NOOB! I've been living in TPV since I was like 2 years old. It's just easier, since I can see behind my back and thus lessen the chances of getting a surprise buttrape.

No, when I see it coming I don't let it happen.
I'm sorry . I usually don't say stuff like that! *cough*
I don't see what the issue is with first person... It cannot be THAT bad that you won't even try the game. For all you know it could be better that they have it in FPV.
I am actually looking forward to trying it out for myself, and if it sucks then it sucks. Nothing we can do about it... it does seem to be the trend with new MMOs these days anyway. It might be the best new thing to happen to an MMO. And MO will be the next big thing!!

Sadly a great many dont feel as you do. I personally love the idea of FPV only!
Change is something to be embraced, we have enough cookie cutter MMO's out there.
first off what kills when I hear ppl whine about fpv, if you ask a majority of the ppl over 30 years of age, we don't give a sh-t what our toon looks like, why does everyone care so much about the thing that means the least in any mmo, jesus give it a rest, should be looking at gameplay, originality, graphics should pull up 3rd, lag stuff like that, give the how cool is my armor crap a rest. In todays world of give me now, even if you get that cool new piece of armor like a sugar cube it only excites you for about 20 mins then you get all depressed again and need to take a pill.
Have to disagree. I'm well over 30 and aside from CoD or Unreal I loathe 1st person. I prefer my rpgs to be in 3rd .
OP, you say you started playing MMOs with EQ? Then why would you say gamers from EQ would QQ about FPV when EQ was nothing but FPV with a few other view options that were horrible. I don't remember any kind of Third person PoV in EQ that was on par with the likes of WoW...but maybe I quit before then (Ended up quitting when WoW came out).
Personally, I only played in FPoV when playing EQ which was my first MMO. I didn't mind it at all, in fact it made me feel more apart of the game.
However, I'm not against having a 3rd PoV for those WoW kids. Everyone has their style of play.
But if the PoV is that big of a deal for you, then I guess I won't be seeing you in game because I doubt that the devs will be implementing anything other than FPV when it launches. They might add in 3rd PoV some time later...but I highly doubt it.
And how the hell does FPV ruin immersion of the game? If anything it furthers it because it's as if you are in the game yourself, looking out from your toons eyes.
3rd person takes away from immersion because you're less eveloped by your surroundings and the feeling of actually being in the game with that view point.
It's difficult. There is a lot to be said for the immersion of first person, and if you are going to encourage this, in a pvp game everyone should be in the same boat.
But the inability to stare at your awesome gleaming mightiness could be a serious issue, in terms of creating a relationship between the player and the toon. And we all know that relationship is what brings in the bucks. I also enjoy looking at myself - although Oblivion handled it well, in that most of the time I was FP, but could check myself out also, and see how I fit in the game world.
It's a bold move for sure. I suspect it's not a good idea, but perhaps there is some kind of compromise... I will try it and see how it fits, anyhow.
...
And to the comment that if the game is not gear oriented it shouldn't matter, I disagree. Gear games offer two things - stats (ie power) and looks. Even if the stats are less important, the looks most certainly are.
I strongly dislike being limited to the first person view when doing actions that are not aiming-related.
I play Darkfall ATM and I, like most people I see, travel with our weapons out for the 3rd person viewpoint. The only times I appreciate having FP-view is when shooting or casting.

That's the point. TPV is generally a huge advantage over FPV when you're doing anything BUT aiming. It grants you field of vision in areas that you would normally not have it. So while FPV is not a true representation of human sight, it is far more accurate than FPV. I don't particularly care for immersion, but anyone familiar with FPSs knows that FPV adds a whole new level of "stealth" possibilities and requires players to have a much higher level of combat awareness. It effectively adds another player-skill check to all forms of combat.
Is it any wonder the carebears on these forums are against MO being FPV only?
Actually, the First Person View will increase immersion. Just think of any exciting FPS games. You feel like you're part of the battle. In a game like MO, not being able to see behind you makes exploring more exciting and suspenseful. Another good thing about the FPS is the elimination of the WoWish "Look at me and my shiny armor mentality". You care less about the way you look but more how you're character is as a person.
No gripes here, I like First Person View. Seems like its more your problem than anyone elses, so the game fails in your mind, but not most other gamers that are intrested in MO.

I don't think it has anything to do with being a "carebear". Some people prefer it, some don't. I personally like FPV. Either way, resorting to name calling just kills any credibility of any point you were trying to make and makes people argue even more loudly against you.

Bullshits. The most immersion RPGs up to now are called Elder scrolls and Might&Magic series both are FPV. In fact 3-th person view has less immersion, but are more easy to play. Just as in FPV you have rely more on your ears than on your eyes. The difference is similar to FPS and Console Action game... Just personal preference...

I am up for the interesting idea of it. Seems very immersive. However combat in games like Oblivion I always go 3rd person. So it remains to be seen.
