Why are all the MMO's based of WoW or everquest? I mean come on does no one have a orignal idea these days? I wish they would just make A different type of MMO because Im getting sick of all these dumb mmos that are based of WoW or EverQuest. Goblins, Orcs, Humans, Elves are allways in every mmo that I have ever seen, and its getting a little boring.

i see your point, but you know, RoM is for free. So imagine Wow, EQ, etc without the monthly fee......
okay, you got micro transactions. but still. I think it is rather daring to do a clone nowadays, esp. when so many just complain about such concepts.
Fear not, you got Fallen Earth, Star Trek, StarGate and what not coming up.
So, what do you suggest? Seeing how we already have high fantasy (EQ2, WoW, LotRO), low fantasy (AoC, WAR?), space (Eve), etc., exactly what setting would you propose? I'm sure there are game companies that would love to do something different but just don't know what that is. It would be interesting to see just what other settings you believe lend themselves to MMOs.
maybe thats why I stopped play MMO's alltogeather because they're all alike. I also disagree with you saying its a daring move to copy another mmo. plus there are plenty of idead out there other then copying other mmos
There is one easy answer: MONEY. It becomes popular and makes much money, why to risk and invent anything new when you can earn million by creating sort of copy with bit of change?
There is mmorpg with different races but they are far from popular....
They are't, they are based of DIKU.

If you don't like wow/eq clones, then there are plenty of other options. EVE, Wurm, Flyff, Wizard 101, Dorkfail - just to mention a few.

Agreed. To say all MMO's are "based on WoW or everquest" is a bit naive. There's pretty much an MMO for any theme you can think of... even Hello Kitty.
i'm very proud to never have played WOW because i'm tired of hearing it being used as a reference for any game. as a result i don't even have to play WOW because i feel like i know it
ps: like WOW was the first mmorpg
(I didn't play it)
LOL when I first saw the topic I thought its about this game has similar gameplay to WoW again.
But it ends up talking about the human, orc, elf etc, LOLOLOL
Its like talking about why this bento has rice inside again its boring ROFL
You know, you can complain about how the bento has similar taste again but you can't complain that it has rice within.
That's the definition of it.
Its not called base on WoW or EQ, its called base on fantasy setting.
WoW or EQ are the same, being based on fantasy.
MMO played (paid):
AION
DragonRaja
Dungeons & Dragons Online
Lineage
Lineage 2
Tibia
Ultima Online
Warhammer Online
World of Warcraft
MMO tried:
Atlantica Online
Darkfall
Dead Frontier
Dungeon Runners
EverQuest
Lord of the Rings Online
Monster Hunter Frontier Online
Ragnarok Online
Requiem
Runes of Magic
Runescape
The 4th Coming
and some other Chinese/Korean or beta MMOs
Basically all mmorpgs are just that... masively multiplayer online role playing games!
Different or similar artwork/music/tech, but the core ideas are all the same; just under a different "mask".
It is kinda like hamburgers... I am sure Mcdonald probably didnt come out with the idea of a hamburger, but there are areas in the world that would think they did invent it and therefore everyone that followed is a "clone" of Mcdonalds... (even ipod is not original, but yet there are many so called "ipod clones")
In the end, the clone topic won't matter anymore. If the game is fun, then you'll stay, if its not then you'll move on...
I have been playing since CB and I think it is fun~ I also play WOW and WAR, but atleast ROM doesnt cost me anything.
Another wow like game?! are you dumb or something.. WoW copied its UI and other stuff (you can search it yourself OP) from other games.. so i wouldnt be calling any game a wow clone when the wow your talking about is the biggest ''biter'' there is in the gaming industry these days.. wow got everything it has from other MMOs.. so dont.. just dont flame on other games -.- wow blows btw.. they went off the tracks in the past 1,5yr~.. and btw.. RoM is pretty nice when u spent more than 5mins with it wow lover.. kkthxbb (flame on punks)

This has NOTHINg to do with WoW, Everquest or whatever MMO you mention. It all comes back to Tolkien's lore, who introduces us elfs, dwarfs, orcs and all the other fairytale creatures. And when we go backfurther in time, we'll meet the Grimm brothers who also spoke of elfs, trolls and stuff like that....
Back to modern day, all the MMOs originate from Dungeons & Dragons, since that's the first (fantasy) RPG to be published (OK, start flaming me, I know that Gygax made stuff before D&D, but those titles are so unknown...)
The game actually tries to incorporate ideas from many games. The sub class system is a FFXI trait, nothing to do with EQ or WOW.WOW actually as a game CREATED nothing, that game is a total copy of EQ as well. The thing is that it is a GENRE,it is called a Fantasy MMORPG,IMO there is not really that many of them,we have only recently seen a bunch because the F2P asian market has infested N.America with all of it's clones.Unlike WOW however most of these games DO try to incorporate a little different flavor ,as i mentioned ROM uses the sub class system that FFXI made famous. Also copied from FFXi is that you can utilize any class or as many classes as you wish all on the same player.
EQ/EQ2 is actually a game based on team work and enjoying each level as you progress through the game.WOW is more about IGNORING the game and heading right to RAIDING /PVP.ROM through the use of its sub class system ,allows the player to experiment with several combination, therefor enjoying the levels longer and the game better, rather than worry about end game content. As far as exploring a world and fighting mobs and crafting and progressing by what ever means,it is all part of the GENRE,to change it means it is not part of that GENRE.That would be like joining a FPS game and complaining it is always the same and has no RPG qualities.
Most games do incorporate small differences even within the same genre, sure we will see some overlapping things likes elves and goblins, but even then you can be assured to see some different mobs of players.Example ,games have smallish races like Tarutaru or Gnome or Ratonga, they have big like Galkan/Ogre/Giants medium like Dwarf/human entities like fairies so many subtle differences but at least it keeps each game a little more intriguing.
You get what you join,if you want MMOPVP then you look for that,if you want MMOPVERPG then look for that,if you want a FPS like COD/Quake/UT..soon wolfenstein, then you look for that.If you want a single player game then of course there is again many choices.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Because everyone has a little of dragons, elves, dwarves, monsters and dungeon, etc in their wild fantasies and to be able to play out ( live ) that fantasy in an unlimited virtual worlds with changing contents and quests and lores is ubber fantastic! And the more ppl still fantasize these themes then the more game companies will keep making them because there is money to be made. Of course, if you can't stand this kinda fantasy then there are none MMORPG games out there for you (Call of Duty or the Sims? for instant).
ps. of course, there are games like EVE, etc but you probably wouldn't like them cuz there are no dwarves or elves there ^_^
Why? Because:
1. ppl are familiar with the concept, they expect to see such type of creatures & races in a MMO; even since Tolkien managed to create this fantasy universe, it became more and more popular and most RPGs are based on it. Players also tend to feel less alienated when starting to play sucha game because of the familiarity of the subject.
2. WoW is a big rip off after many other previously successful games; or better said, a well compiled encyclopedia of ideas borrowed more or less from other games. They didn't invent the whell, nor did RoM. They're just games. The main difference between WoW and other game is that WoW was (and still is) hugely popular and ppl know the game better than others. But it wasn't original to begin with, and tbh I don't see why a game should be original in order to be a good game. I'd rather play an unoriginal yet very well created game rather that somethig completely new, yet badly constructed.
3. If you like it, play it; if not, don't. Is that simple.
lol people who call this game an WoW clone are dumb. its not a clone. last time i checked a clone is a or almost a 1 to 1 copy and its not. yes it got stuff from wow but also from other mmorpgs every mmorpg are a bit the same its the same genre. you can say wow is a clone copy or whatever from other mmorpgs that came out before wow like ultima online serious people are just stupid if they say itsa clone and not even knowing what the meaning of CLONE is
You can call it WoW- like, but not quite a WoW clone. To have a WoW clone, as you stated, you would need to have the likes of orcs, goblins, elves, dwarves, etc. Guess what? RoM currently has only ONE race: Human. So it is kind of taking WoW, tossing in some WAR, maybe a little of LotRO and AoC, and mixing it in a giant PWI inspired f2p candy dish. And judging by the 700,000 active at launch... that's a pretty tastey first mouthful. It might even linger a while for others, because it's FREE. Other than needing space on your HD, why bother "unsubbing"? Er go, the numbers should only climb from here.
It's like M&Ms. They all copied each other's candy coating and chocolatey center. The big difference? RoM is THE BLUE one!

Umm....not exactly. One character has a maximum of two classes in RoM. It's not a complete copy of FFXI; it's more of a scaled-down copy.
Try Ryzom. It's a pretty nice game and they could use the subs.

Good article, (now I know what those combat dummies are for in the houses) and I agree, when you first get into the game you are thinking, WOW version 2.0, especially when you find yourself killing boars.
But later on, after you start appreciating the dual class system it gets really fun.
Toss in some surprise ganking from red players and its a pretty fun game.
But no matter what they say, its not really F2P, or at least I doubt you'll be able to resist tossing them at least a few bucks. (permanent mount is the single best thing to buy in the early going)
