I had a list of upcoming MMO's I was choosing from for my next dive into a virtual world with my friends.
This was one high on the list for all the obvious reasons...but the fact that they don't have that much info on it and little interaction with fans...made me decide not to try this one right off the bat. I decided on EQ II for the following reasons:
1. They have official forums where they have a very active interaction with fans.
2. They have very regular updates on how the game is coming along.
3. They had a strong showing at E3 as well as being very active in the press.
4. They are not attempting to be overly innovative.
TR has no official forums and VERY LITTLE interaction with their fans. I think I even read an interview where they said they knew what they wanted to build, so didnt find it necessary to interact with fans as much as other developers do.
The information about this game is very sparse and other than a community liaison who surfs all the 'unofficial' forums, there is no community interaction. They also seem to be a too 'innovative' from what information is available (extremely instanced, to much in my opinion). While good innovation is something I look for, I think the direction some companies are going in, to cater to the masses, is not a good thing for MMORPGs.
Their philosophy seems to be hugely geared towards the 'casual' or 'dumb' player, far too much as far as I can tell so far. It seems they want to be more like CoH rather than UO. No depth in other words.
Not to say I won't try it some time. Just that they need to open up to the public more if they don't want more people like me to jump ship who are interested, but not confident enough to choose it yet due to the little amount of information and interaction with fans and their radical departure from what makes MMORPG's worth playing, in my opinion.
With all the titles being canceled, I don't want to put much hope into something that isn't for sure. And they have shown very little to make me confident that this game will even see the light of day.
Just my 2 cents I could be wrong and it could end up being the best MMO ever. I would like that very much as I have been following this team for some time and had my hopes dashed to bits when UO2 went under. It just seems to me like they are venturing way off the path that earned them their reputation, which so far is the only real thing that keeps me interested in this title.

I will not be playing this game for several reasons.
1) No hype at all. What have you heard of this game. The only time I have seen it when not searching for it was on the cover of Computer Games Magazine. I read the article and it looked like a complete unknown.
2) Too much instancing. How much actual interaction with players will you get if you are always in your own world.
3) Saving characters in a MMO is not very practical. Meet a character one day and he is a mage. Next day he is a melee. Next day he is a merchant. How do you keep your friends in order.
4) No evident PvP. I personally am all about PvP. I see a game without promised PK support a non-complete game.

I rather them be too busy building and testing the world, to have time to talk to fans actually. Different people want different things in an mmorpg and you really can't please everyone. Fan input is important, but if they have a specific vision, at this stage in development they should stick to it. During beta however, they should listen carefully to the tester's opinions.
As for their policy on releasing information, i kinda like it this way. Rather than hearing about an innovation only to be disappointed later... everything we can see about TR will be in the game, guaranteed.
The instancing allows missions that rival single player rpg's in depth and complexity. As in examples they've given, there will be locked doors, secret passageways, NPC's that fight alongside you, stealth, diplomacy, and all sorts of dynamic stuff happening that would be too hard to do in a huge, seamless world. Depending on the skills that the player specializes in, a mission can be done in different ways as well. No depth is fetch quests, or kill x monster quests, or no point to the killing other than getting stronger/richer. Instancing allows a better story to be told.
As for catering to the "casual" or "dumb" player, they're simply eliminating time-wasters. In FFXI, after being invited to a party, it could still take 30 minutes to an hour to actually start killing something. I know some people like to explore or wander, but it gets to be a real hassle after you've seen it once. This a Richard Garriot and Starr Long creation but its not going to be like Ultima Online. And if they're willing to risk their reputations on something so innovative, i'm sure its going to be amazing.
I'm pretty sure this game will be released... why? This is Richard Garriot's baby. Not based on fantasy or any preexisting science fiction world, he developed everything about it from the ground up. Unique engine, storyline, even a new language. Three years of development, and NCSoft has shown that they're willing to take chances on innovation.
1) Hyping is a double edged sword. I highly doubt WoW for example can possibly live up to the sky-high expectations of it. I trust in quality and my own experience much more than the hype of some stranger.
2) Your friends can always teleport to you. And the main non combat area is a huge hub where people mingle and set up groups, or trade and craft. You'll only be alone if you want to be.
3) Because they'll still look the same and have the same name. In FFXI you can change jobs anytime for free. No one confuses who their friends are.
4) There will be PvP. Just not nonconsensual PvP... they call it Wargames. There will be several forms of it, from straight up dueling and group fights, to actual games like capture the flag and stuff like that.
I'm sorry but how is innovating a BAD thing?
So far yes, I and my guild will play TR.
If they will stay true with what they told in the interview then certainly we'll play.
The only thing I don't like is there's no character customization. You get a randomly generated character.
Other than that, nothing atm. Once they release more info then we can further judge the game. Not now tho too early to judge.

It's too soon to tell. Granted, Richard Garriot's name is being touted left and right, but I'm skeptical after that bit of news about the lead programmer and artist leaving the project. It sounds like this one might be hanging by a thread with all the hype being built over WoW and EQ2. It's odd, I've never been hinged on so many different choices before, it's like sensory overload. There's GuildWars to consider as well, and I've recently discovered EVE Online, which I have to say is one of the most breathtaking games I've played in a while. I am definitely curious about this one, but with the recent bad news, and the lack of in-depth information or details about this game, it's hard to say. I'm hoping all the hush-hush isn't a sign that it might get scrapped, but more of a sign of keeping something good under wraps.

All you choose is the sex at first, but very soon after you can change anything about your character... hair, eyes, skin color and all that stuff. There is a decent amount of customization. Even more so since you can wear any clothing, armor or weapons without worrying about its stats.
And that is precisely why I will not be playing EQ II. Been there, done that. I'm ready for something new.
Playing CoH, I've often lamented why couldn't more games be like that. As someone else stated, exploration is only good the first time...after that, it becomes a chore to have to travel through all of it. I want to spend my gaming time actually fighting things, not travelling across a landscape I've seen a billion times already.
I for one am eagerly anticipating the beta.
I agree its too soon to tell. But theres some cool stuff happening here. For one thing its a new fresh world and another thing thats cool to me is the ability to do voice chat.
SOmebody said something about not being able to customize ur character. If that were true I wouldnt even think about this game. But I dont see how they would possibly do that it would be suicide.
BUt I to will try to play the beta and if it turnes out real good I may play it... If Im not to busy playing GUild Wars that is!!!

The game is due Early 2005, it is too early for them to hype it up yet. If they would do it right now, then by the time it comes out the hype will be gone. Since the game has at least 5 months to go I think it is hard to say how it will be, I dont think major idea's will be changed however a lot of things may change. Besides, it is not an official release date, but only an estimate, and my personal opinion is it will move futher back.
Hype ? Lack of hype , is that a reason nowadays to decline a game ?
Richard garriot deserves a chance , for the sole fact that he had the guts to kick E-arts , and go straight to korea , which if you hear me will be the next great thing in Mmorpg., Just to protect his ideas...
But what do i know , iv been out of the gaming scene for so long...

Personally I give every game the benefit of the doubt..and this one will get a LOT of leeway from me
Finally a game that Take a few radical chances with the game meachanics, that TRIES to break the mold that has become standard.

Ill at least try it because Richard Garriot is behind it...Its that simple, although im almost certain ill be disappointed because im expecting a great deal from it.
Actually "lack of hype" is a serious problem for me. It shouldnt be, but it is. If you live in Australia and you want to group with other aussies in the same time zone, you have to choose bigger titles out of necessity really. I wouldnt pick any game that i didnt think would pick up at least 50k subs at retail these days.
Given that its a about a 8 months- a year from launching, the current lack of hype isn't really a big deal imo.
Hot damm....someone that actually KNOWS what PvP really is supposed to be! ((Here's your cookie)) Only idiots (yes I mean that) like the PK player. Nothing difficult about hiding in the shadows ganking toons. That's just nonsense....like I said, it's for IDIOTS. (wipe that drool you fool)
Now, about THIS game....too bad it's an NCSoft creation. I won't be playing it. The taste they left in my mouth with Lineage 2 was enough for me. I swear off all games that fly under the NCSoft flag. Too bad. (lol)

Who is the idiot lol mostly carebear whiners:P
But on ncsoft your right hehe:P
This mmo looks to be high on my priority list of my two mmos to play (Ac2, WoW, Tabula Rasa, and possibly MEO or DDO grace this list) and chances are WoW will drop off of this leaving me with Ac2 and Tabula Rasa. The game looks very promising but I am worried about the lack of hype and the character development of characters within the game.
Lack of hype is one of the biggest issues that plagues Ac2 right now (soon won't because of expansion pack early next year) and I know how that affects games.
I'm worried about the interchangability of characters as I do like roles to appear before people to make them unique and not all the same character.

About the anti-NCSoft stuff...
Unless you hate NCSoft for its advertisements and boxes, there is no point to skipping TR just for being produced by NCSoft.
Destination Games is a completely 100% different team from the development teams of CoH and L2. Its headed by Richard Garriot and many other ex-origin employees, and directed towards the US market.
Back to that old thing....if you don't like moronic PKers you're a carebear. Lol, that's bullshit. I like PvP in a consentual form, seiges, duals, or specific areas where you KNOW if you go into it to complete a quest or something you MAY end up facing someone unexpectedly. That's more fun than a dumbass with one shot kill capability that deleveled to 4 from 40 hiding behind a rock waiting to get a good shot at your back.....
Anybody that adores ganking is just a low IQ'er. Any game that allows it isn't one worth playing. I need more in a game than mindless killing by 2 year old brats and Columbine wannabees..

NCSoft earned my disdain. Any game flying under their banner won't see my money, don't care to even try a beta of theirs, and won't go for any free trials they will ever offer.
I'll skip TR because Garriot picked the NCSoft scumbags to back him, I'm quite sure he'll come to regret it.

Well Gigli really made mirmax loose all of my respect and NCsoft do have crappy cs overall but Tabula Rasa looks intresting and fast-paced action-packed sci-fi and so on.
I certainly give it a shot if I get my hands on the beta, I will not buy it before Ive tried it.
The same goes for all MMORPG's except Darkfall which I fell in love with.

I pre-order it.
I rather play a game that they do THEIR game then a game that follow the advice of the wrong player base(those that answer to forums and all are a minority, thereby listening to much to a minority rather then focusing on the majority is a mistake).
WoW was dead in 15 hours. EQ2 took 50 hours to died. Lineage II never got a chance from me. EQ was alive for a long long time and so it seem to be happening to CoH now. EQ was build by Verant who have a: ''If you dont like it leave attitude''.
Listening to fans is good, if you can manage to figure what the MAJORITY want, listening to guilds is a nonsense as they over-inflated each others with no common ground on the reality of the player base.
I can tell you that listening to guilds is a marketing suicide.
I dont say I will like TR, I say I pre-order it, which I didnt even do for EQ2 or WoW(althought I try them and give them a chance anyway).
CS is secondary if the product is near perfect, and I have no idea on the product but it look promising.
