The game was amazingly fun when there still was people leveling.
Don't get me wrong, I prefer skill-based gameplay over leveling-and-experience any day, but it was just so fun to find people everywhere, questing. The original was by far the best.
Though, when TBC had just released and I was playing in Nagrand... best damn zone ever fucking made, I tell you. The lore and everything blew me straight out, and oh so the music at the night was... so mystical and tranquil.
Absolutely no competition. Classic WoW was the best. I would seriously start playing again if they would do away with the expansions lol. Which of course would mean leveling to 70 and 80 would've been a waste of time.
WoW was THE best before they implemented battlegrounds. I remember gathering a small group of about 20 people to run around to alliance cities to pvp. We always ended up at the night elf capital and the more back up they got the more we got. Spamming channels all over azeroth and having people fly from every single flight path to come aid in the fun. Nobody cared what level you were, and you werent entirely sure if it mattered. THOSE were the days.
Back then people actually grouped all the time, everywhere, for most everything. Taking down named was a big deal and people enjoyed doing it. Bah I miss it : (

Nostalgia does odd things with people. The most important things about an MMORPG are playing options. Lots of them. Today Wow has about a zillion more playing options than old hat "fetch that, grind that, raid that" mechanics. If OLD wow would have stayed they would have had 500K to 1M subs by now. ---- To all those who disagree: imagine a new mmorpg from Blizzard with all the TECHNICS used in WotLK. The quests? incomparable. The 3D vertical built up world (like the Fjords)? non existent. The phasing? non existent. The Arena? Non existent. The Bg's? Non existent. The titles being based on competitive play and skill BOTH in Pve and PvP (an not on grind)? Non existent. The 100/100 massive fights over destructable Keeps with the Siege engines of WC3 EVERY DAY on EVERY server? Non existent. The daily quests in open world PvP reducing completely the grind feeling? Non existent. The titles and achievements system in EVERY branch of the game you like most ? Non existent. The personal flying mounts and have a REAL 3D experience? Non existent. I could go on and on and on. Dual Specs for example are a perfect example of how they will relaunch everyhting. But basic Wow was a lot less than present day Wow. All the rest is NOSTALGIA.
There are other important factors in a game then options. And expansions changes a game, in some games it is better because they need more content, in other it's worse because all the old stuff gets worthless.
I think Blizzard made a misstake by raising the level cap, they should have added more content for the existing levels instead and new RAIDs. More races, classes and crafts are always a good idea but changing the level cap makes the old content feel like a grind and no one will do the old RAIDs.
Also flying mounts are a good thing but they should have added it to the whole game, not just the new zones. Even if they had to make a revamp of the old zones for that they can afford it.

Pfff.
This is beaten by City Raids and Lake Wintergrasp any day any time now AND people are stimulated because they are awarded.
Keep on dreaming, I was there and it was a kind of amateurish group PvP play with not one single meaning behind it than to "spoil time" because organised PvP was still being developped.
Yesterday we had 3 full raids agains 3 full raids on the horde side in LAke Wintergrasp and... this time ... no lag at all. That's 120 against at least 120 fighting over a Keep in rumbles with our tanks and siege artillery.
Our melee classes being healed in a second wave of healers. Ourt hunter and mages standing around us. EPIC.
It was a great fight and it always depends how good it is , but now that the 200/200 are over and we fall back again to 120/120, there is an experience Wow never had in old Wow.
And btw I DO love the balance in the BG's, which open world PvP never gives (but LW comes very close sometimes).
WoW is definitely a better game with far more depth and options then it was in vanilla. But, the game is more goal oriented now. Zorndorf I think what Ozreth is trying to get across is the spontaneous fun that people found themselves in during classic WoW. Back then, apart from raiding and battlegrounds, there wasn't really much to do except focus on crafting. But somehow people found stuff to do. I remember playing before Battlegrounds, when world pvp consisted of someone spamming an area telling everybody that they were about to assault the opposite faction's camp or base. This happened ALL the time. This is what led to tarren mill and southshore being so infamous for huge brawls because they just happened to be situated very close apart in a lowbie area but easily accessible from both horde and alliance. Also, today, the only way you know who the really skilled pvpers on your server is to check their arena rating. Back then, you knew who the good pvpers were because they made a name for themselves in battlegrounds, or camping blackrock mountain, waiting for a group or raid to come by that they could harrass, later posting the screenshots on the forums. Do people even camp areas anymore?
Do you remember how hard it was to kill flightmasters, but eventually some people did and would hold the area hostage...posting their demands on the forum. Or how about whole guilds stashing away on the boats between the continents...only to pop out and kill the opposite faction when they were out in the ocean. I always liked the rogues who would target people on the trams.
Dont get me wrong, WoW is definitely a better game in pretty much every aspect then it once was. But its lost its spontaneous quirks that everygame eventually loses when it grows old.
After looking at some of your guy's posts, you have somewhat changed my mind :P. I do think that some aspects of
the game are better, and some are worse. I do still think however that the BC expansion ruined the game somewhat.
All they did in that expansion is make the cap 70, and thats about it. No new mobs, instances are still run basically the same, and now intead of maybe getting some "set gear" from a blue instance, I have to either be in a big ass guild that can run a raid, or do heroics.
Wrath, IMO, was actually an improvement to the game. It covered alot that TBC did not. Like, new mobs, instances were WAY more fun, and everyone could get gear again. Plus, they added some really cool new pvp events, and the new quests were just downright awesome. Like controlling tanks, gryphons, dragons, you name it.
I would have to say that had they done Wrath first, or did BC more like Wrath, the Glory Days would have been then.
Ahh, here come the nostalgia boys and their faded memories of the glory days. Sure, when vanilla WoW came out it was pretty awesome because there was not a whole lot to compete with at the time. Seriously though, how many of the old school people would still be playing if not for the expansions and extra content that is there now? It's like that other game we see mentioned in sooooo many threads - UO. Yeah UO was pretty awesome in it's day but maybe that's because there was not much else to compare it to? If the game is as great as so many people say it was then why aren't they playing it now? No, they would rather reminisce on the 'good ol days' and keep reminding us that WoW is just a carebear, cartoony noob experience.
People often mention how lame it is to run the same heroics or the same raids over and over again to get the shiny epics but come on - if not for that, what would you expect people to do? Kill 3,000 of the same mobs to get to the next level or to get the next spell on the list? Shoot magic missiles at the clouds for a couple of months to get that increase in level? No matter how much content developers put into their games there will be people who burn through that content. Then what? It's like people who complain about grinding. If you're not grinding for something, what the fk else are you going to do?
People fail to realise the incredible amount of time and work it takes to create new content. I'm so bored of seeing WoW bashed by the old 'hardcore' players, half of which I suspect never even reached end-game content to realise how challenging and rewarding it can be. Just like the old fools from UO and EQ who will keep telling you that no modern game could ever match the amazing experience that the old mmo's did.
All that people do on these forums is bash anything that they are not currently playing or subscribed to and for me it's getting very tired really fast.
Here's a challenge to all you whining little pricks who've nothing better to do that post on the forums all day whilst they are supposed to be working at their day job - create the perfect game. Let's see how far you get. Hell, why don't you get together with a few of your mates and make one together. Then you can be bashed 24/7 by all the whining tosswads on these forums for not incorporating their ideal content, or doing something differently to how they would like to see it done.
If creating games was as simple as sitting around a table and brainstorming we'd have some truly incredible things to experience. However we are limited by talent, time, ability, hardware and money - amongst other things.
Why don't you just go back and play your old 'glory day' games instead of hanging around here and bashing everyting that has been created since, while you continue to convince yourself that nothing since has been as good or any better than the first game you were really into. Take a step back and look at things from a different perspective for a change.
*sits back and waits for the reminiscing fools to explain why and how their OLD game was better*
While you're at it, why don't you explain why you're here on the forums flaming this post now instead of playing the end-game of said glory day game.....
Not KARA , Nor Black Temple and defently nothing raid or dungeon wise with WoTLK not EVEN whith the BRAND NEW Raid that is comming out or is out im not sure can compair to UBRS now that is how a dungeon should be or a Raid should be for that matter.
Question and you are a TRUE WoW fan if you get this right. What was the VERY first Raid ever in WoW??
I will give you a hint.... It was a lvl 1 forty man RAID.
Now for all you gammers who rember that raid leave the WoTLK crap to the NEWBS.

If not for new games or new content in old games would you still be running that lvl 1 forty man raid today?
I just wish they would do something with the old dungeons that are never used now. DM, UBRS, CoT-DM, Tempest Keep stuff...they just sit around unused.
Sometimes I do think 10 levels per expansion killed the dungeons. Maybe like 5 levels per expansion would have still made those dungeons used while giving people something to work for.

Ah Grasshopper you misunderstood WoW can not come up with a better RAID or Dungeon then what they all ready done with original content. It gets REAL boring seeing the same stuff in a differnt NEWER style of WoW I will give you the perfect example how many "SISTERS" dose Maiden of Virtue have hmm I give you a hint we first saw her older sister in ULDAMAN and to top it off we seen her younger sister in one of the Dungeons in WoTLK so lol all the same ol same thing just recycled.
So sorry dude you have to come up with a better point then that.

What would you suggest? A maiden with 3 heads? A maiden with red hair? A shorter one?
How many variations on a boss can you think of? The thing is Blizzard keep finding new and interesting ways to do similar things. With the amount of games these days and even the already huge amount of content that has been put into WoW bosses already, we can only expect variations on things we have seen in the past. At least the develepers have a go at changing the formula and trying to keep it interesting. A good example would be Heigan in heroic Naxx. Sure, the concept is simple but trying to get 25 people to do it right without dying is always fun and it's obviously pretty challenging for some.
What's that? - Playername: [Failbot] Isturi fails at the Heigan dance (5).

Oh well. Better luck next time dude.
Thanks for the challenge Dude but I dont play WoW anymore. I wont go into the reasons now because i don't want to put WoW down. I am happy you love WoW you should want to feel this for the game of your choice. But let me tell you this for a fact I had a hunter, a DK and a healer I promise you this I would of helped the RAID with any of my toons for a very SMOOTH run the CHALLENGE would of been for you maybe especially if you ran PUG but if you run in a RAIDING guild maybe you might find it of less difficulty. I want to encourage you to find a good RAIDING guild since you seem to have difficulty in RAIDS.
BUT as for me not a challenge what so ever I, IF still playing would of been a bonus asset to the RAID regardless of my choice of toon. I admit healing is boring just keep the tank alive and if the tank is good enough he or she will make sure you are not over healed by not taking on unnecessary hits. Would of had the curtisy to make sure you did not need to OOM....lol OH and I could of with ease TANK it with my DK because I know that before any RAID KNOWLEDGE is power and I would of made DARN sure I knew not only HEIGAN but all of the BOSS fights in NAXX . What can I say about playing a hunter lol point and shoot oh wait that what most ppl think when playing a DPS class MODS like OMEN help you to regulate your AGGRO but in the go ol days you taught yourself that with out MODS and you also taught yourself what it means to use LOS when placing TRAPS. and you taught yourself which MOBS to trap hmmm OK YOU see a healer in the group that keeps the bosses health up there you go COMMON seance. lol All yeah I would of ran that RAID with ONLY those who knew what they are doing for a SMOOTH run.
i think for me wow had various high points over the last 4 years . theres no doubt the leveling of my first chracter to 60 and the world pvp balttles we had were a lot of fun. it was getting boring and the burning crusade did inject some new life into it . i think where they went wrong was increasing the level to 70 making what you worked for the previous 2 years redundant . it would ve been better in my opinion to have had new skills that were attainable at 60 through quests drops etc and keep some of the game balance . also they made getting epic gear far too easy . i initially enjoyded the leveling from 70 - 80 but like a lot of people i m finding theres something really amiss with the endgame now . so much so i m leveling an alt in the hope it might be put right with the next patch . because its not really worth playing a level 80 at the moment . unless your willing to do the same old instance over again and again . the bgs are pretty dead now and wintersgrasp is nt really playable because of the lag . a friend of mine said to me recently the problem is blizzard released the lich king too soon and broke what did nt need changing and now they dont know how to fix the game . unless they really do something soon i fear wow is about to implode .
for me i m waiting for the next patch and playing one month in every two at the moment . if it fails to deliver i wont play untill the next major patch after that is released . i still like wow but i m only there by default rather than design . the other fantasy mmos dont touch it yet . i would say at least half of wows current sub base will jump ship the second theres a half decent mmo to rank along side it . still after all the let downs i think they are safe for a while at least . the only glimmer of hope at the moment this year is aion . i ve not a clue what that will be like.

There is nothing fun about instanced pvp zones. My point is it was fun when you had to organize and plan yourself. Not when your group is put together by a queue and an instance and preset goals.

For me WoW vanilla was clearly better than what came after. I do agree with those stating that WotLK is a much better product than TBC however - TBC is one of the crappier expansions I have ever seen in any game in terms of content (good polish as with all Blizzard products but the content was just plain bad).
As a starter, lets look at what is better today compared to vanilla WoW. Overall quest design, more high resolution gear textures, proper use of shaders, phasing technology and the arenas. These are all better/additions compared to vanilla.
However, with the expansions non-controlled PvP basically disappeared, the MMO elements are almost gone in the game and mechanics/design is pushed closer and closer to the FPS format. For me all these points are big let downs. At the same time content additions are becoming crazy scarce. Let's face it people - since March 26th 2008 Blizzard has presented two new boss fights for raiders. If that is not plain bad in terms of content release schedule I do not know what is.
So net-net I feel that Blizzard has dumbed down the product - when was the last time you got 'lost' in WoW today? It does not happen anymore because layouts are made so you can just jump in the stream and ride down the mountain. You can basically calculate how many hours it will take you to get a certain gear level - tokens and cool downs for rare mats take care of that. So no item is a rare gem that only 2-3 on the server has (out of luck and skill). As single items (as I am sure Zorndorf will point out) many of these make sense in a way - but adding all these things together creates an FPS with a very large map. I honestly think the direction is a mistake long-term for Blizzard and I hope they remedy this in their next MMO.
As an example - the Movie and Music industries made alot of money short-term from streamlining their products and 'giving people what they want'. Today both are in deep trouble since the unexpected, the creative parts and the shocking is gone. At the same time people are downloading David Bowie and watching Blade Runner instead. I have faith in Blizzard but WoW has gone to far into the same corner as New Kids on the Block and Blizzard is better than that.
I would say classic wow all the way. The game is frigging easy now in almost every aspect possible. Even the classes have been dubbed down to be easy to play. Battlegrounds ruined the pvp for me as I enjoyed the world pvp alot more because I feel there was alot more skill involved. However I will say Wrath of the Lich king was much better then Burning Crusade. Adding paladins on horde was pretty stupid but adding blue looking oversized tenticle rats on alliance was another thing. And I think about 70% of the horde now is a blood elf.
IN my honest opinion though.... World of Warcraft was at its best Pre-Bc. Anyone not understanding this would be probably the reason why the game is easy-mode now. Shure theres more options now and more things too do, but all those things that you have an option too do are so easy its almost a cake walk to do anything in the game now. I really think the game is a little too easy, but I think thats just from the fact of people whining over things they don't have a clue about in the first place. Raids were more rewarding pre-bc as well and things were harder to get and I think this is why the game was alot better then. Just my 2 cents
One thing i really liked about pre-BC was all the little things players found to do for fun. It was harder to advance in game (both to max level and at max level, not to mention i dont remember people being as concerned about not being max level), so people found lots of other things to do. I remember people going out of their way to find grey sets, having community run duel tournaments (which ended in an epic finally with a huge crowd), ganking 40 man raid groups, actually just hanging out with other players in a cool zone, attacking other cities or towns just for the hell of it.... no one does any of this anymore, because it is so easy to make progress in the "real" game (even if you can only log in for 5 or so minutes at a time). I think the biggest thing with Vanilla was that it seemed to be a lot more community based, while modern WoW is much more game dictated. I know that you could do these things still, but no one does because their time could be "better spent" or something.
Altough I miss the 40 man runs the thing I miss the most was the no pressure good fun 5 man runs.
I still remember logging in on a Friday night and having 4 other players ready for a night of Strat.
We would be on TS having a laugh and doing the dead and undead side with nothing else in mind than having a laugh.
It could be the best times I have had in a mmo, back then we didnt care about killing the boss or the gear we all came from earlier mmo's but somewhere it all changed and got a bit more complacent.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
In the beginning when Horde hated Alliance and actually Fought eachother for the fun of it in open world pvp (not for an achievement).
When WoW was more raid focused and those players that did 40 man content stood out.
I just prefered the focus of WoW back then over the jack of all trades game that it has become.
More options don't always make a game better imo, WoW could have stuck to the old 40 mans with casual 20 mans with pugable 10 man raids (ubrs, old scholo/strat) and lengthy dungeons like DM and BRD. They could have kept the pvp ladder system that was much more enjoyable imo.
Now its just a epic gear handout.... hell atleast heroic dungeons are nice.
Edit: scratch that TBC heroics were nice, Wotlk is a joke atm.
The last THREE post on this thread got the POINT!!! I only wish some DEV from BLIZZ could get the POINT because it would of made a once GOOD game PERFECT, Belive you me not all this patch crap and new crap that BLIZZ shoves down ppl throat is not making it better, but worse.
I be willing to bet that with in a year BLIZZ wont have the numbers for WoW like they do now. They will be much less there is only so much "CALL TO ARMS......" a game can offer.

They deff were back when i was leveling up in classic with no clue what endgame was
The grind felt really long back then but was amazingly fun when doing it with friends
I agree with border. As with any MMO the early days are always the best.
That's when the feeling of adventure was the best and seeing everything was new and exciting.

I think Wows peak was a few months before TBC.
Thanks Isturi for showing the perfect example of the wankers I was talking about.
If not for new games or new content in old games would you still be running that lvl 1 forty man raid today?
Somehow I think not.
Thanks Isturi for showing the perfect example of the wankers I was talking about.

BWL was the peak of WoW. What came after was mostly mediocre and TBC destroyed it
i think for me wow had various high points over the last 4 years . theres no doubt the leveling of my first chracter to 60 and the world pvp balttles we had were a lot of fun. it was getting boring and the burning crusade did inject some new life into it . i think where they went wrong was increasing the level to 70 making what you worked for the previous 2 years redundant . it would ve been better in my opinion to have had new skills that were attainable at 60 through quests drops etc and keep some of the game balance . also they made getting epic gear far too easy . i initially enjoyded the leveling from 70 - 80 but like a lot of people i m finding theres something really amiss with the endgame now . so much so i m leveling an alt in the hope it might be put right with the next patch . because its not really worth playing a level 80 at the moment . unless your willing to do the same old instance over again and again . the bgs are pretty dead now and wintersgrasp is nt really playable because of the lag . a friend of mine said to me recently the problem is blizzard released the lich king too soon and broke what did nt need changing and now they dont know how to fix the game . unless they really do something soon i fear wow is about to implode .
for me i m waiting for the next patch and playing one month in every two at the moment . if it fails to deliver i wont play untill the next major patch after that is released . i still like wow but i m only there by default rather than design . the other fantasy mmos dont touch it yet . i would say at least half of wows current sub base will jump ship the second theres a half decent mmo to rank along side it . still after all the let downs i think they are safe for a while at least . the only glimmer of hope at the moment this year is aion . i ve not a clue what that will be like.
BINGO ty very much for this post you hit the NAIL right on the SPOT!!!

There is nothing fun about instanced pvp zones. My point is it was fun when you had to organize and plan yourself. Not when your group is put together by a queue and an instance and preset goals.

Zorndorf will disagree with me but I do not care
My Artwork http://tras-h.deviantart.com
I know that you could do these things still, but no one does because their time could be "better spent" or something.
thats why i miss vanilla
Altough I miss the 40 man runs the thing I miss the most was the no pressure good fun 5 man runs.
I still remember logging in on a Friday night and having 4 other players ready for a night of Strat.
We would be on TS having a laugh and doing the dead and undead side with nothing else in mind than having a laugh.
It could be the best times I have had in a mmo, back then we didnt care about killing the boss or the gear we all came from earlier mmo's but somewhere it all changed and got a bit more complacent.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/235780/page/8
WoW was just a more focused game back then.
