The Chronicles of Spellborn -- Open Beta!

I urge everyone, even those of you who have not heard of the game, to check it out. JUST went into Open Beta and need your support! Real time combat system, actively dodge and aim attacks, house vs. house PVP, and a beautiful world and solid, original classes. This is not your typical fantasy MMO -- a very unique and inspired setting as well as entirely skill-based PVP. No more gear being the deciding factor. Check it out now!

Ya know...3 months ago I woulda been thrilled to give the OB a shot. But somehow...watching Acclaim and their poor service and attitude towards the community has really turned me offa even bothering to try it. While it is free...I may give it a go yet. But I am pretty sure as long as Acclaim is in charge of this game...I pretty much will steer clear of dealing with them.

even though i didn't find it much of a new experience when in the original beta - if it had slid into release here when it was first released i would probably be playing it still

as it is - nope - got better things to do now

Well if you do get to register on their shitty website (which took me multiple times trying because the buttons didn't work). You will get the message "The maximum number of activated open beta accounts for today has been reached, please try again tomorrow. "

This is the fouth time I've registered for a chance at a Beta on this game...and still no luck.

I played in the European beta, and the game honestly wasn't that addictive.  It had a lot of potential, had some nice lore, and some nice environments, but the hook just wasn't there.  Might get better, or might -be- better by now.

Seems good so far, I created a massive warrior.

I like the graphics and the combat is fun.

I have a old system and on medium settings seems to run without stutter.

    Playing: EvE, Ryzom

Loved the art direction, great lore, good concepts. Positevly hated the combat system.

Now, not saying it's bad but just not for me. The actively dodging and aiming thing is all well and good but from what I saw it actually made it a more tedious grind as opposed to lessening the pain. Only played to level 15ish so I probably missed out on the good stuff but these were my two main complaints:

    1) Played a caster which means the active combat mechanics actually don't work to your advantage and you end up sort of just tanking the mob.

    2) Fights last way too long for this kind of combat. If i have to dodge, aim, rattle and roll for ever bear and wolf I'd like them to die quickly please!

So that's just me but again props to the dev team for originality and world creation.

They just allowed us to level past the level 7 level cap today.

Please if you want to be a little know it all.. well then know it all before you post.

Well, I'd try the game, but the fact that Acclaim can't manage even its own site, means I can't do anything on it, thus rendering me incapable of trying to get into the beta. :P

I see listings for premium accounts already. Does this mean they're doing essentially an "Open release"? I would assume they don't actually plan on wiping open accounts if they're already geared up to charge people. I still need to look into payment for this thing though. While I like that I can buy time on a month by month basis as opposed to having to sign up for a recurring and then cancel to check something out, the whole Acclaim Coin system is shady as balls.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Yes, you can buy a Premium account and level past the beta restriction. No, there will not be another wipe. Your beta character essentially will transition to launch.

As of right now, the subscriptions aren't going to be up until it officially launches. The subscription will be a $15 a month automatic charge, and they mentioned pre-paid gamecards. Currently, you have to resort to the Acclaim Coins. You CAN however get a month for $14.97 if you buy them on the web, then smaller amount on phone. They posted on official forums how, instead of paying $20 for it all online. So, that might be worth looking into.

But, we won't be stuck with the Coins much longer.

Ok. Knowing that the whole coin thing is temporary makes me feel much better.

EDIT: The client download, it is taunting me. I should have kept the old one ;;. They didn't happen to put up an official torrent anywhere did they? I would make due with an unoffically one, but I have a rule not to use anything via torrent that requires a login unless its from the developer.

My brother just downloaded the client in about 35 minutes from one of the official downloads. I think he might of got the link from the FilePlanet link to the TCoS page. It's a wierd launch page that you normally can't get to. Or they might of added a new download, I've had my client installed for the past week or so, tho. Installed it overnight.

Enjoying it lots so far, tho, the community on the PVE server does seem a notch above the PVP server, but, that's just from the people I experienced.

Edit: My brother just said he got the good DL speed from the Spellborn Downloader, which would be Download #1 on http://spellborn.acclaim.com/downloads.html. Not sure how the speeds on the second one would be, but they just added one today.

    { Mod Edit }

Either way, I never said the game released ONLY in france, the "etc." word should have keyed you into that one.

Regarding the caster easily dodging thing... only way I see that happening is if you jump/cast which not only looks moronic (not a fan of bunny hopping in any way shape or form in any game) but also feels exploitish. (not that that's a word but anyway).

So keep on believing I never played the game or whatever floats your boat but I stand by my opinions regarding those two particular issues.

Anyone having issues with being able to log into the game at all? I keep getting the username is invalid over and over, though apparently the game is supposed to be open to all.

it is entirely mediocre, and not really worth wasting time on

What do you have to lose trying it? It's free for the first 7 levels!

The game is great! Don't cheat yourself because someone else thinks it's not worth it.

Well, I've got it to register me. I had to go to the main acclaim page, log in, change my password, then go back to the spellborn page, then for good measure, signed out, then signed back in and clicked register, and viola, I got in.

And right off the bat, they need more customization for the characters look-wise, and the models aren't exactly the best-looking things I've seen. I do like the choice of what armor you want to wear, along with clothing, and the colors for both. The weapons could use a bit more of a variety, the two-handers don't quite look like two-handers, and I'd love to change the colors of them.
