Cryptic is now owned by the idiots known as Atari. 'Nuff said.

The fact they hired Bill Roper as a design director the biggest epic douche since Brad McQuaid ..says more about the company than any article you and anyone else can come up with..including this one

    QFT

I would think Cryptic had plenty of talented people and I have no idea where they got the idea to hire Roper in a lead position on CO.  To me, all his achievemnets don't make up for his horrible failures in Flagship.  It really doesn't matter what reason he was hired for.  Who knows, CO might still be a good game...but Cryptic doesn't have my respect.

Make games you want to play.

But I digress... anyway, this is not a new strategy. Ive never seen it done quite as ruthlessly as it was done in the case of wow, but it was smart and efficient. Cryptics method was clumsy and easily attacked.

It should have been done by researching the forums dedicated to their competitive type mmo, and in emails to the people of interest there.. Simple really. They need to hire people who can use more subtle aproaches if they want to avoid the flames. But please dont think this isnt done all the time. Its just done sneakier than simple tells in game.

Exactly, I wonder if people yelling outrage have been employed before or live in a very sheltered box. I've seen it and continue to see it all the time in past and present work places and in business in general. This is especially true if there is bad blood between competing companies, or fledgeling companies pissed off at their old parent company...

You can say certain Cryptic employees aren't very clever, you can even be disappointed and uninpressed with their PR and management in general but do realize everyone of these companies have employed these same strategies in one way or another. It's more then likely whoever it is you are working for has too.

So while this is pretty lame I'm not going to ask for a Cryptic flogging or say I won't ever play their games. I might as well stop playing any game or buy any product from anyone for that matter. Anyone interested in a hippy commune? :P

Also NCsoft is far from any white lilly saint either.

Gotta love it when people call game designers names, act as if they have EVER DONE ANYTHING worthwhile in their whole life.

excuse me but companies like this , bow to my all mighty gaming dollar and If i the gamer don't like it ....then they can keep plotting and scheming on the way too the unemployment line.

cause they are not gonna get a red cent if they don't straighten there ass up.

i don't care of what company did what to who in the past ,this is happening real time ...if the Pr is a complete douchbag and they are pulling cheap tactics ,guess what they can go fucking fuck  themselves

Wow, what an arrogant post! Not everyone who dislikes the business practices of Cryptic are unemployed or live in a sheltered box. The reason why this is a disgusting move on the part of Cryptic is because it breaks with the EULA. It's tantamount to Chinese gold farmers going into a game and spamming people with their advertisements. Game companies have been tryng to stop the gold farmers from spamming. What Cryptic is supposedly doing is similar, though I don't know what volume of spam they're generating. Unlike with the example of leaving a competitive IT company's van in front of Vodafone, it's not legit. People may bend rules in jobs, but this is beyond bending... it's broken them.

Whats the problem, i see this as marketing at its finest... Where else to find superhero fans then from another super hero game.

So what mmorpg do you play ?

    a fantasy one..mayhap?

well i'll just let every fantasy mmorpg related company that's either in developement or active to spam the shit outta you while your in game.

since it's marketing at its finest .

    ....

that's kinda the whole point of why people are upset ,other than being under handed and then being un sincere after being caught.

the whole reason it was brought to light was to prevent something like that from happening again, tells from gil sellers are bad enough .

don't need to add ,with another game company trying to whore a subscription

How are you going to stop any further companies from doing the same thing?

You can't, no matter what anyone of us think or say your never going to change how companies go about their business.

I resubbed to CoH/V yesterday, after reading about CO it got me in the mood to go back to my old hero characters, haven't recieved not one single tell from any game company wanting me to beta thier game, I'm bitterly disappointed, I was expecting to be bombarded with them after reading this thread.

I play on Defiant EU Server name is Sin Seeker for any Cryptic employee wanting to give me a beta spot please =).

STOP them??? My friend, I would encourage them to do more of the same, only on a bigger scale.

Imagine if you were playing Warhammer. You think it's "okay" but you are really playing it because you don't have a choice for anything else on the market that gives you open Realm vs Realm combat, but you are tired of WoW.

Then one day, you get a in-game email telling you about "Realm vs Realm Online", the exciting, new open Realm vs Realm game that has upgraded features and blah blah blah. Would you like to be part of the beta? Or more specifically, would you like a DISCOUNT for trying out the beta on a future purchase that non-beta testers won't get? We'll sell you the collector's edition for the price of a normal box. Heck, I'd sure give it a go, simply because it would be free or significantly reduced in price. I have no "loyalty" to Warhammer; I'm a customer of theirs first and foremost, not a frat brother to them. I'm looking for the most fun I can have on my buck and if someone is going to give me a discount for trying or subbing to their game, I'd probably check it out. They would have no sympathy if I said "Hey, I'm a little broke right now.. could you give me a discount because I've had a subscription with you for the last two years?" I doubt my phone could handle the insane laughing coming through it from them as it would probably burn out the earpiece.

Now take it a step further. You do that, then Warhammer sends you a "Come Back Home To Us" email offering you 60 days for the price of 30 if you reactivate now, because they know they have lost customers. Would you be tempted to try it, or do you have "loyalty" to this new company? I would be in heaven if one day it got so bad, that one company says "For every month you sub, you get one FREE month". A year subscription for the price of half a year. I don't know any sane customer who wouldn't go for this type of offer. Only some weird "loyal" fans would say "Nah, I'm not looking for a bargain. I like to keep paying the traditional way. I'll stay here."

I hope CoH ups the ante on those guys.. "Forget their beta.. if you guys stay, we'll give you an additional 30 days free, for being such loyal customers."

Hey I totally agree with you, I would love if other companies did that, so far my newly subscribed CoH/V account has still not recieved any of these spam tells from Cryptic to join their beta, I've posted my server and char name but still nothing, as posters on this thread have already stated that players are being spammed with tells I am still bitterly disappointed that I seem to have been over looked.

It would really shake the market up if companies followed your idea, forget the veteran rewards that accounts earn over time, just throw in real incentives to stay with an MMO otherwise your competition will snatch them away from you with even better benefits.

Now I'm jumping back into CoH/V and hoping I haven't missed any of those beta spammers yet.

Ok this wasn't exactly the greatest tactic but this is mearly a whine from NCSoft because they know once Champions Online and DC Universe hit the shelves COH/COV will be well quickly forgotten about. Lets keep in mind that Cryptic were the ones who made COH/COV and so actually they are taking back their players. Sorry NCSoft you can't avoid the inevitable death of COH/COV.

I doubt your going to see CoH/V die off, yes they will undoubtedly lose players but who is to say CO is going to be good enough to keep them. It is however about time we had more Hero games on the market to compete, imagine if Blizzards new secret MMO also happens to be a Hero MMO, then we are all buggered.

I don't care what bloody company makes my next MMO fix, so long as it gets released relatively bug free and with enough content to keep me happy, I don't give a rats ass how they go about getting customers, for all I care they can come knock on my door and ask me if I want to play, beat getting the usual weirdo asking if I want new windows or doors fitted for the umpteenth time.

customers affect business ....no customers ...no company.

im sorry that you weren't considered important enough to be solicited a beta key ................maybe try applying on the companies website that is having the beta instead .

like the people that had been there waiting a year to get in ....but instead wore passed over .

how hard is it to realize people that tactics like this are messed up....no one wins in a situation like this .

people say of companies do this all the time, oh i wanna be sent advertisements cause i'm a whore for such things like this...no matter what dumb fuckeness excuse pops up ...it doesn't excuse that this practice is wrong and needs to stop.

and people need too take a stand and stop letting big companys push there weight around with shit tactics and that goes out too every big name company out there.

a plea too gamers stop bitching about developers like soe Ea and funcom ....just don't give them your money and tell them no and gamers quit acting like addicts defending these fucks

But you told us everyone was getting spammed, you mean there aren't!!!! you mean you exagerated? oh my gosh /.

Guess I need to make my sarcastic responses a bit more obvious next time.

I like your analogy about no customers = no company, perhaps with all the unhappy customers $oE has had over the years they should have been dead and buried long ago.

Btw you seem overly concerned about me getting a beta, don't you fret about me, I haven't tried for a beta in years and most likely never will, they tend to spoil it for me, but you keep on worrying that i want a beta spot if that makes you happy to have someone to focus your responses on.

     Seriously,

Both CO and STO have written Failure all over it.

So this kind of crap doesn't even suprise me.

I hate SOE myself, and after all the RMT crap SOE is going into, I will never play a game from them again, but...

DCUO has far more appeal to me then CO.

I said the same thing in the Champions forums. I didn't realize there was such a heated discussion going on here.

I agree that it was underhanded, but the reason I'm not worked up over it is because at the end of the day it was just a pointless move. They can have as many beta testers as they want by letting in the people who asked; and despite all the big talk about how much ChO is gonna suck that goes on at the CoX official forums, nearly everyone playing CoX will at least try Champions. And then the innevitable will happen: people will choose between them. Months will pass, and DC Online will be released, and people will have another choice.

Nothing Cryptic has done here will impact the bottom line of any of these games because it's not like they're snagging people from CoX and brainwashing them.

Please dont assume. Many of the older CoX players have a bad taste in their mouth when it comes to Cryptic and their way of treating customers. Yes, Cryptic developed CoX, but they also did a horrid job in regards to customer service. Jack was far from a fan favorite when it comes to anyone involved in development. The game has improved greatly since NCSoft bought the IP and took over development. You will have a good portion of the CoX members trying CO, but I highly doubt it will be nearly all every one. I know I wont and nor those I game with, even before this recent stupidity because we do not like Cryptic nor Atari.

You are right, this wont effect the bottom line of either game, as both will be judged by their own merits. It doesnt make what they did ethical, and that is what people are getting worked up over.

  • qbangy32qbangy32 Member Posts: 681

I was always under the impression that Cryptic made CoH/V and that NCSoft published it and dealt with CS? I played from the start aswell and thought that was how it was, didn't realise Cryptic was also in charge of the CS aswell before they parted ways.

As it is I'm enjoying my second time around in CoH/V, even my 7yr old daughter is bugging me to make her own characters, thats the one thing with this game, you can easily get hooked on creating tons of characters =).

I look forward to the Hero market expanding this year and next.
