Your Perfect MMO?

monarc333monarc333 Member UncommonPosts: 622

What does your perfect mmo have? What kind of graphics? What kind or gameplay? Does it have a huge, seamless world? Or does it have something more structured?

Let me design for you MY perfect mmo...

ENVIROMENT

It would have a HUGE, seamless world like Vanguard:SOH. But the dungeons would be instanced like WoW. I'm not a fan of openworld dugeons where you have to wait for respawns because the grp before you just killed the boss you need. The enviroment graphics and charachter customization would be like AION.

GAMEPLAY

The combat mechanics would be like WoW. Free flowing, not attached to a mob like in EQ2. It would definatly have WASD controls. It would certainly have crafting, something like a mix between Vanguard:SOH and WoW. Something that is not overly time depedent but still proves to be a satisfying experience when you make an item. I believe you should be able to get the best gear from crafting as well as raiding. The guild mechanics would be like EQ2. in my opinion that game has the best guild "gameplay" that I've seen. For PVP it would be like WAR. Where there is open world pvp for important sites, and instanced pvp that you can que from anywhere.

QUESTS/RAIDS/DUNGEONS

The quests would be a mix between EQ2 and WoW. There would be some short quests, but like in EQ2 there would be LONG and indepth quests chains for some of the best gear in the game. Dungeons would follow in the WoW tradition. Short, 5 man dungeons that are connected to quest chains. For raiding I would like to see the current version of WoW raids, like the 10/25 raid versions.

MISC

A game should have more than just raiding, pvp and gear upgrading. Social aspects such as music playing in LOTRO and the ability to wear clothes that you think look cool and still have your gear stats at the same time. Also I believe housing is an important part of the social aspect of the game. For me the best housing was in EQ2, where you could purchase anything from a room in an inn to a luxury home with multple rooms and even outdoor space. With this space you could buy home items and make it look how you wish. Another important aspect for me is having a variety of mounts and titles to achieve. In this aspect I would take the mount variety in WoW and add the title variety in LOTRO/WAR. I would also take the ship "mounts" in Vanguard:SOH. Also I would take the book of knowledge in WAR and apply that to my game.

GEAR

For me gear should be everything from the mundane to the outrageous. I would take from a few games for this: WoW, AION, LOTRO. Im ok with glowing shoulders and big weapons but I also like the more realistic version of LOTRO.

So this is my game in a nutshell, WHATS YOURS?

Just mentioned this in another thread, but to repeaet AD&D in the Forgotten Realms setting.

PVE gameplay initially with possible inclusion of evil alignments at a later date.

Playing AD&D got me into UO and then EQ which was kind of like AD&D but not really and I've been waiting for the real thing to come around for a decade.

plus - Instanced dungeons are a must these days, but I hate too much instancing (AOC, DDO).

    OR,

some kind of epic space game  based on Iain M. Banks' Culture novels with fps and space travel.

I agree about too much instancing. That was the one thing that really bugged me about AoC. I've gotten over it though. It's the way it is. I would have been nice if it was an open world with just dungeons being instanced.

An Epic space game sounds good. I wouldn't mind an Aliens Online or something along those lines. Maybe a Dune Online game. I wouldn't mind EVE so much, but I prefer if there were actually 3D characters and not just ships. If there were stations that you could actually walk around and interact with people. That and the ability to walk around inside your ship.

A Firefly MMO would be great if done right.

    Environment:

VERY Large world with NPCs that have some AI -- so if it was like CoH, then you could make friends with some NPCs who became recurring characters during your play (because no one would want to play Lois or Jimmy, but they add a lot, for instance).  You can have your own structures built.  Instanced dungeons, but with random maps.

    Combat:

Bosses that had a very WIDE variety of abilities and you couldn't memorized or program a mod that would predict when each thing would happen.  You'd have to react in the moment and develop intelligent reflexes with good group tactics (but the combat would be more free-form than something like WoW where you die to a monster a bunch of times until you have memorized the right strategy which you will use from then on, complete with mod alerts for when a given attack is coming, etc, etc).

You'd have combo attacks like in FFXI.  So the correct combination of attacks from different players would lead to big rewards.  You would not have a Tank/Healer/DPS system.  Aggro would be a bit more free-form with more AoE attacks and everyone able to take punishment.  You'd still have combat roles, of course, but you wouldn't have 90%+ of the damage get focused on one person.  Some roles could help provide defenses for the group (short term shields or whatnot), warriors might be able to intercept an attack now and then to defend a weakened comrade, healers could dish out damage and heal (potentially both at once, though less damage than someone without healing).  Healing would be rarer though, so at the end of a long fight everyone would be beat down quite a bit because you couldn't just spam heals (they'd have a CD or other limits such as placing a debuff on the person healed so they couldn't be healed again for a given time).

You would be able to solo effectively throughout all levels -- I only like a couple things from FFXI.

Characters would not become focused in one element or the like.  There'd be no one that was a "fire mage", because you'd have to use the right element or combo to attack a given boss effectively.  Hence a wizard would have to be equally good in all elements, pretty much.

    Gameplay:

You'd have a job system like FFXI.  Your main character could level up different jobs and switch at "home."  You could have a subjob equipped to a main.

You'd have a talent system kinda like WoW, but the ability to earn more talents (so eventually you could max everything, I think -- though I am not wholly married to this idea).

There would be crafting.  You could enhance gear you find, and the system would be free-form.  You don't get a recipe for armor X, you get recipes for various abilities and stats, that you can then weave together to make items.

Well, that's all the big stuff I'd want, I think.

Well that sounds a lot like wow.. :) But i'm not judgemental..

    Personally:

    #1 Seamless world,

ordinary areas and open outdoor (instance style) areas with tough enemies for good risk/reward, and openworld bosses that do damage based on % of health so they always remain a threat. Also deeper cave /temple type instances (isolation for your group adds to atmosphere)

Player owned camps, but npc owned hubs, you would be able to earn the trust of factions based on your actions, and live out in the wilderness if you have no allegiance .

day/night cycle, with effects on certain things such as spawns, visibility etc, (maybe even some abilities more useful at night , lighting up areas for example.)

    #2 Combat system,

FPS style, cones and aiming for different types of abilities (not calling them spells i'm trying to stay vague:)) Soft locking would be needed for certain abilities/lag compensation.

Skill based but not with huge caps.

Skills would unlock new skills at certain levels but also may lock out other skills.

Try to avoid flat immunities in pve/pvp so people can use their abilities in ingenious ways to defeat complex fights.

    #3 Missions,

allow players to set quests/bounties at a bulletin board type area (eve style), combined with interesting plot line npc quests (tabula rasa i liked for that) Give players a REASON to do what they do, and CONSEQUENCES for actions.( goes hand in hand with freedom)

    #4 economy/crafting ,

In depth economy and crafting system where players will be able to make the best items (rare mats would be aquired from bosses- the Legendary weapons from vanilla wow are a good example of this), i

trading and item degradation (zod runes would be handy :p)

drop all your farmed crafting materials when you die so it's wise to not just mindlessly gank farmers, since they would carry less outside of hubs.

best farming spots in contested areas, but each time something is collected it increases the respawn time, so areas can be overfarmed resulting in reduced mats/hour and farmers spreading out in the world looking for richer returns.

(imo EVE does this part almost perfectly)

    #5 Gear,

Personally I like gear, of all types and sizes, choice in look and stats is paramount, being able to make your character look and specilise in what you wish.

There will be no useless stats, would most likely include Strength for lifting and melee, Agility for speed and accuracy, Intelligence for disarming and spellpower, Stamina for durability in both health and travelling without eating/drinking (food would also drop on death, so you could ambush people and survive in the wilds , if you couldn't find wild creatures to eat.)

    --------------

I'm most looking forward to Fallen Earth / Star Wars:The old Republic at the moment for my post-apocalyptic / sci-fi fix.

    edit:

    Arezon:

"I wouldn't mind EVE so much, but I prefer if there were actually 3D characters and not just ships. If there were stations that you could actually walk around and interact with people. That and the ability to walk around inside your ship."

CCP are in the process of adding this to eve at the moment, when they do i'm going to resub for sure :p

I want a game that's fun to play without having to grind first.  When I go see a movie I don't have to run 20 laps around a track before I can watch it (might do me some good but you get what I mean).  I want to be useful to other players so there is a reason for interaction.  Why pay a sub fee if I'm alone all the time?  I want to play 3-9 hours a week and still be useful and have things to do.  I don't have the time or inclination to devote 15-25 hours a week to a video game.  If I have that much free time I'd be better off picking up a part-time job and growing my savings account.  I want gameplay to be centered around social interaction.  Whether its PvP or negotiation or banding together to accomplish something, I want my actions and the actions of others to affect the game and how people play and interact in it.  The combat in WoW is pretty good but more action is always nice.

Everything else is really just window dressing.
