Looking for Free to Play with lots of Quests and Story

SupercollideSupercollide Member Posts: 34

I'm a 30year old(or so) gamer who's looking for a free to play RPG to tide me over until Star Wars The Old Republic comes out.

Offline I'm a big fan of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (big surprise I know) and Final Fantasy. Online I quite like FlyFF but as my main char is a Healer I'm stuck in a vast grinding rut and hate that there's about a 3 level gap before the next quest. I've been playing Runescape but I've just run out of free quests.

I'm looking for a game that'll not punish me for not playing every night, preferable with enough quests to level with grinding for grindings sake. A good sprinkling of story (or a reason) to the quests would be good too. Heck the moon on a stick would be nice as well!

I'm in the UK, which is important because they won't let me play Mabinogi!

I'm kinda interested in Perfect World, Sword of the New World, Atlantica Online and Megaten but none of them seem to 'fit'.

Any suggestions or comments about those games?

Maby try Guildwars, its not exactly a f2p (or an mmorpg for that matter) but it has story and you can get the complete collection (all 4 games) for £30-£35 in game, i dont really play many f2p mmorpg, i mainly stick to p2p. only one i ever liked was SOTNW but that becomes a deadly grind after a while. iv just downloaded Requim only becuse i was tolled it was a good f2p so il see how that goes,

you can try i Ragnarock online, i used to play that game a couple years ago and it was fun, its a p2p but they recently opend a f2p server (offecial one) its legal but drops and experiance have been vast;y dropped so its even more of a grind that it used to be hehe, :p

I agree, Guild Wars would be great if not the perfect choice for you.

Ragnarok Online is a nice game where you can login "grind" and log off whenever you please. It is a nice time killer whether you have 5 minutes to spare or 5 hours to spare no aspect of the game forces you to play hours on end except for the recent battlegrounds which are 20-30 minutes (not a required part of gameplay) and WoE a sort of PvP lasting a few hours twice a week (Also not mandatory part of the game). This game truly rewards intelligence, planning and ...patience, most people would go insane before maxing out their characters or end up making a million characters and getting no where.

I would recomment Perfect World since it´s F2P. I´ve played with almost all characters and the healer(you talked about being one)  is a great character because at all level there´s always people asking for one to help ehre or there. You can amke money easily in the game and trade it for gold (Gold is the currency that it is used for IRL money).

I´m a barbarian(Tank) haven´t had any problems ever, many people (unknown people) have helped me on quests, bosses and FB´s (Dungeons). In my opinion the kind of game that you can play for hours without getting bored.

If you need ingame help my nick is Enchainedme.:)

    Thanks for the ideas folks.

So far I've tried out Runes of Magic, Perfect World International, Atlantica Online and Megaten.
I prefer Perfect World to Runes of Magic (it's probably me but RoM felt very 'clunky' so I took a mild dislike from the start.) but I've been very pleasantly surprised with Atlantica Online, it sounds so much like an offline set online but the community has been great and I got showered with gifts the moment I started. Still going to give Perfect World more of a go, if only to get me a dual-wielding blademaster and try some crafting. the jury's still out on Megaten as it was very sparsely populated when I was on but they do have good story so far.

Ether saga might well get tried out soon, I just want a few more reviews dropping up and I'm also gonna try and pick up Guild Wars on the cheap.

I'm gonna pass on Ragnarok solely due to the level of grinding. Monato Espirit, Fairyland and Florensia are going to be passes as well unless I get sick of the others as they don;t grab me in the same way. Sword of the New World gets passed over too as the character models are too similar for my liking and I've been warned out the grind.

Yes, if you want quests, go with Ether Saga. Check out this link for an article that discusses the 12,000 quests that the game has. Yeah, the quests might not have a ton of depth, but at least you won't have to grind. I've been enjoying the game so far.

As for Florensia, a huge grind ensues after the beginning levels, so keep that in mind.

Mabinogi has a storyline that you can follow, and due to the recent modifications to the payment system (you can rebirth your character at age 20 for free now, which eliminated my complaints about the game not truly being F2P), you can play the game for free now and not feel as left out. This is one of my favorite F2P games; I like it as much, if not more, than some P2P games.

All in all, just try some of them for yourself -- you'll only lose a few hours of time if nothing else. Maybe you'll find the game that really works for you as well.

    EDIT:

Regarding Megaten, I just downloaded the game recently as well since I'm a fan of the Shin Megami Tensei RPG series on the PS2. I agree that there isn't much of a community, but I really enjoyed the gameplay. I can't offer any truly insightful comments about it since I'm new to it also, unfortunately.

133 quests per level! Excellent. I'll download Ether Saga this weekend!

I spent ages downloading Mabinogi only to find that as I'm in the UK I can't play it, I was really looking forward to stuff like writing music in it... I hope they do a European release soon.

you can try guilds war and shadow of legend, they're f2p, even you're willing to pay, they charge you lower and more reasonablely than others. both have tons of quests to do, extensive crafting, huge world to explore . as to the storyline, they have connections among each other. hope will help you.
