Opinions on Lord of the Rings Online?

Well I played WoW like a year ago and I really enjoyed it. After I hit 46 I started to hate it and I quit. I really want a good MMO and I just downloaded the free trial of LOTRO. Does anyone here play it and what is your opinions. If you could, could you rate it like this

PVE: x/x

PVP: x/x

Group activities: x/x

Raids: x/x

Endgame: x/x

Thanks alot!

Well I have said good,I have tried it a couple of times,2 weeks ago was the last time to try the new classes that came with the x-pac.

Tbh I think I would enjoy the game as I like the world, story lines, graphics etc etc but for the life of me I cant find a class I enjoy playing, when I tried the last time it was basically to try the runekeeper but again that fell flat for me,I had another go with my old minstrel but again no luck.

I would never advise someone not to play this title but for me it is a non-starter as I just dont enjoy the classes.

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Same with me, I've tried several and the Warden is about the most enjoyable but there is something lacking in the classes. Maybe I'm just tired of fantasy MMOs.

Well, in my opinion it's good to great. The thing you haven't told us is why you quit? So many players quit but want to return only to find the same game they left.

There is "more' of what made LOTRO a good game.

There are things I don't like but the things I do like are there...

extremely polished game, lots to do if you are interested in what there is to do

A game that tries to stay true to the books

PVE: x/x I'd say 7/10 to 10/10. Some quests are extremely good and others are go and kill x amount of y. However there is usually some story that goes along with it and it makes sense to be doing it.

PVP: x/x depends, I've only done monster play once and it was fun. But pvp is so subjective anyways that one person's good is another person's bad. I give it 7 out of 10 for fun

Group activities: x/x game shines with group activities however you really need to be in a good kin. Sometimes pug's are hard to come by and I personally always hated them anyways. I say 8/10

Raids: x/x not a raiding game. There are raids but if you are looking for the WoW lifestyle of raiding all the time this isn't the game. Still, the raids they do have can be very fun and the Watcher is very hard. I say 6/10 to 10 out of 10 for quality

Endgame: x/x not an end game game. This is where people falter. You have to experience all the game while leveling. If I was to make you lvl 60 right now you probably would wonder what the heck to do. Not enough raids, you could spend all your time working on traits and deeds and legendary items but "why"? There are several higher lvl rep grinds. There is monster play for pvp but it really depends on what you want out of pvp.

If you enjoy working on the small details of your character, doing some raiding, helping others get equipment, some crafting, making alts, some rep grinds, working on trying to get and level good legendary items, then sure... great  "end" game.

If you are looking for an exciting smash em up no holds barred end game then LOTRO is not for you. It really is about all the book quests, the areas and the individual stories that are going on in these areas, all leading up to (at the moment) trying to get into Lothlorien.

No offense mate but the game never ever released as a pvp title, they had that little monster play(I honestly dont know if they have added to it or not)though that was just an "extra" this game was always released as a pve title.I would be shocked if any player picked up this title with views to pvp, though having said that maybe you did :)

I wouldnt know I never did pvp in the game, also as you can see from my 1st answer that question wasnt in the poll but thought it was very relevant...as was the fact LotRo was never released as a pvp title :)

I played Lotro from beta, and I have seen many changes to the pvp instance.  Many 'improvements' were attempted, many failed, few were welcome, some were changes that no one asked for.  I am sure many more 'improvements' will be made, but at some point you have to accept the game for what it is; Fantastic PvE, Crap PvP.

I will agree with you though that it maybe is 1 out of 10(I never played but never heard anything good about it)it just looks bad when any game gets a 1 out of 10 without some sort explanation why it gets a 1 out of 10,the basic reason maybe is it was just something extra they gave the players with not alot of thought in it as that wasnt/isnt what the game is about.

The game may not be about PvP, but when you release an entire Book dedicated to the PvP zone (Delving), you have just made the game 'about' pvp.

I hope the OP is not getting side tracked with the lotro pvp debate. I recommend playing the game as a PvE MMO, nothing more.

    "Group 1" ?

You have a serious mis-experience mate. That's just not true, not even for an opinion.

Except if you deliberately refused to group each and every time, and denied joining a kinship.

Truth is, grouping is one of the main strengths of LOTRO. Experience can be varied of course, but 1 out of 10 ? That's pure trolling mate.

Pve: 9/10 - a few "same old" quests, but lots of group content and solo instances (especially Moria) make the quests thrilling

    PvP: never tried

Group: 9/10 - even with PUG's, it has been always a pleasure. Of course, that is because of the maturity of the general crowd (Snowbourn, EU)

Raids: not my cup of tea

Endgame: I still insist that this term is "faulty by nature" - an oxymoron itself, so can't comment :)

I voted great. I've been playing for about 4 months now and am still have a awesome time. The secret to this game is taking the time to enjoy the content.  Don't rush anything, and immerse yourself in the story.

tried this game, and it was horrible compared to wow.

  • YeeboYeebo Member UncommonPosts: 1,361

On the PvP:  I actually like the PvP in LoTRO better than WoW.  Though i will admit that i haven't tried the new WotLK Battle Grounds, so maybe those are just fantastic.  There are several reasons:

    1. There are separate classes that are only used for PvP.  Balance adjustments can be made to those classes without affecting (i.e, borking) PvE in the slightest.

    2. The PvP zone is persistant. Once you capture an objective, it stays captured until the other side gets organized and takes it back.  In contrast, most of the PvP in WoW takes place in Battle Grounds and Arenas.  It's all "match" style PvP in zones that reset after every match.  The WoW system would be more at home in  a FPS than an MMO.  I have always greatly preferred Realm versus Realm style PvP to "match" style PvP.

    3. PvP affects the world in LoTRO.  If your side controls enough keeps and relics in LoTRO, you get two bonuses.  1. Everyone in your faction gets Xp bonuses, 2. Your faction gets access to a raid dungeon.  The greatest effect you can have on the world in WoW is opening or closing some quest hubs and vendors as I recall.

    4. You can jump into PvP with a high level character of any playstyle you like on the creep side without having to level them all the way up from one.  Get bored with your melee DPS guy?  Roll up a level 60 archer instead.  No need to grind for 3 months just to try out a new class.

The PvP in LoTRO is far from perfect.  It takes too long to get a creep maxed out, the PvP gear rewards on the freep side are currently complete crap compared to PvE gear that's extremely easy to get, and there is only one zone of PvP (even if it is a big zone).  Overall I'd rate the PvP in LoTRO around a 4/10.  It has the potential to move up to a 6 or 7 if they would fix some of the issues I mentioned.

However the PvP in WoW frankly bites.  Almost all of it is pointless "match style" PvP that has no effect on the world, and it's way too reliant on gear.  Back in the days of BC, some guy running around in purples might as well have been a god compared to a fresh faced 70 in quested blues.  Assuming that you don't spend a few months raiding before you take up end game PvP, you basically have to get farmed by epiced out characters until you garner enough points for gear that can make you competitive.

Even once you have decent gear, the PvP is mainly about memorizing comboes and counters.  Tactics and battle feild maneuvers (i.e., large scale player coordination) almost never come into it.  When I think "epic battle" I think of large scale battles with tons of players on each side (it's not uncommonf to have multiple raid groups going at it on the weekends in LoTRO).  I sure as hell don't think "counterstrike," and that's what WoW playes like...save that time invested (gear) trumps skill in all but a very few specific class matchups. Overall I'd rate the PvP in WoW a 2/10.

When I'm in the mood for FPS style PvP...I play a FPS (shocking concept).

    My favorite MMOs for PvP:

    1. DAoC

    2. WAR

    3. LoTRO (though an extremely distant third)

Honorable mention to EVE. Rated soley on PvP I would rate it an 8 or 9 out of ten. Unfortunately, the game you have to wade through to get to the PvP is boring as hell. Spreadsheet manager...the MMO.

Funny, I have the exact opposite impression. I tried WoW, and it was horrible compared to LoTRO.

Each game is different for each person, but I really enjoy LoTRO. The graphics are great, the story is really good, and most of the quests are pretty good also. Like every MMO, there are the share of "take this to over there for this nice pair of shoes," or the "kill x number of y to receive z."

I've been a member of a kinship since just after beta, and I've very rarely had a bad grouping experience, even with a PUG. This game is more for the casual player that takes the time to read the story that goes along with the quests. It's not really about a mad rush to the level cap. If you do that, you won't enjoy the game much.

But I also have 2 lifetime accounts, so I'm a little biased.

Same here.  I had been playing WoW for over a year.  One week in the open beta of LoTRO completely ruined it for me.  Been playing LoTRO ever since.  Jumped back into WoW to try out WotLK, and it was still just painful to me.  The DK starter zone was pretty fun, I'll admit.  But the old zones still seem amaturish in a lot of ways compared to LoTRO.

I started playing LOTR around Christmas, when I bought the Mines of Moria collectors edition.

The game was a bretah of fresh air at first. I came from a hardcore raid guild in EQ2 and I enjoyed the relaxed nature of LOTR, found a new guild, made a few new friends etc.

I ended up with a lvl 38 Champion, lvl 21 Warden, and tried a Hunter and Runekeeper to lvl 15 each. It was missing something. The world is huge and really nice, but it lacks immersion I think. I just didn't feel at home in the world..

Too many boars wolves and bears. Other than that, the game is about as polished as they come.

One thing i noticed though is the mood of the game tends to get really depressing if you play long stretches. It is a dark dark world.
