I really like it. I had cancelled my preorder but ended up buying it anyways and I am glad I did. There is soooo much content. I haven't had any lag, the gameplay is just great and the graphics look great and I am running an ATI 9200 PRO 128MB. The only downsides are that there are instanced zones (not like guild wars, but to prevent from overpopulation), encounters are locked (if someone needs help like a heal, they have to call for help and lose all xp they would get from that encounter to be healed), no PvP and forced grouping. Some stuff is just nearly impossible to do solo if you are a mage/cleric/etc, unless of course you over level your quest and then go back to it.

I can't compare to WoW because I have never played it. Try it out, it was a gift, you don't have any money to lose.

edit: BTW my sig is from a screenshot that I did. You can see how great it looks on a low end card like a 9200.

Make sure if you do end up getting EQ2, you try out WoW. I have played both, and in all honestly , EQ2 is a horrible game. Everything the above poster said about game features is true. Think about what he is saying.

But, try it out for sure, and make sure you try out WoW.

I don't know anyone that has tried both and gone back to EQ2, but i have seen a lot of people that have never tried WoW and say EQ2 is a good game.

    Try them both, then decide.

A decisive maybe.  That's the best answer there is right now... It has great graphics, but it has it's share of problems too.   Problems I haven't seen while beta testing WoW.

The fact that there are zones at all is something that bothers me greatly, but I understand they are doing it for the purpose of lag.  I'm disapointed in my system, I thought it would be capable of much more... It runs WoW at an average setting just fine, but can barely manage the second to lowest (of seven) preset video settings in EQ2.

I told myself I would wait for the real reviews but jumped at $20 off sale at my local Best Buy.  Now I regret that choice very much.  It is an interesting game, but it has a total lack of guidance, and you feel mostly lost, I'm a seven year vetran when it comes to MMO's and have spent more money on my computer then on my fiance's engagement ring (don't tell her that...), I shouldn't be lost in a game like this.  The quest system is adequate and the quests are interesting though as usual pointless... NPC's threaten you and you always obey.

I've already resigned myself that I'm forking over another $80 for WoW (one for myself and one for my girl).  So really, my only suggestion is wait for the more complete reviews, they are bound to hit the sights before xmas gets too near..

i said the same thing about Lineage 2 beta, it was great in so many aspects but then it hit retail and started sucking hard core.  Be Carefull of WoW, i beta tested it too and i liked it.  I am playing EQ2 right now and ABSOLUTLY LOVING IT.  I played eq1 and was on and off, this on the other hand is just great, im not knocking WoW, but if you got eq2, give it a shot, theres some people who like it, and theres others who dont.

Just remember this, SWG was hated and flamed uber 733t hardcore, yet people still play and it even hit 300k players after a few months of retail........go sony go

The main thing to put into consideration here is whether or not you want a happy Christmas or a sad Christmas. I'm in a good mood so I've drawn up an easy to follow chart. If anyone else is torn between WoW and EQ2, feel free to use it. Make copies if you like.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WORLD OF WARCRAFT

    SAD CHRISTMAS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> EVERQUEST 2

I've been in your position and only recently made my choice (WoW).
The only thing you can really do is read the reviews and make a judgement
on which playstyle you prefer. Try to find the more comprehensive reviews
that detail every aspect of the game.

Between EQ2 and WoW..it's a hit or miss. You either love it or hate it in the end.
Too bad EQ2 never had an open beta or trial(yet), it would make the decision so
    much easier for people.

God i bet you never tried EQ2, let me tell you one thing, THAT NO WOW FANBOI CAN SAY WHEN IT COMES TO TRING EQ2...you have to try it for yourslef!  there are people here that will tell you eq2 sucks and yet they never even prolly played it.  your opinion is not the same from the other people here,  if you take the opinion of some fanboi here and try and play WoW, what happens if it does end up sucking bad when retail hits?  and you start to regret returning eq2 without giving it a try, or what happens the other way around?  YOU NEVER KNOW, you have to try things for your self, your not a little baby, you dont need these fanbois holding your hand to help you pick a game that they only like, make your own decision, if it turns out you have no interest in the game you picked, sell it on ebay and get a good portion of your money back.  simple as that....!

Pheweee!! Hell hath no fury like an EQ2 fan scorned...

And just to clear up that little detail, yes, I beta'd EQ2. And in my opinion (if you'll allow me to have one your majesty?) it's just not a good game in any way.

Sorry that makes you so angry :(

i like both games, just eq2 more.  im saying that this guy cant let ANYONE , not even me,  try and make up his mind for him.  take myself for example.  I played swg for a year, i read the bad reviews, i heard of the flame forums, but i bought it anyway, i loved it for a long time.  i stoped cause being a jedi was overrated.  hes gotta make up his own mind.  thats all, you want WoW, then go get it, you wanna keep eq2 and play it, keep it.  i like, other people do to, people hate and so do other people.  its your choice, not ours.

I'm going to play both, at least for a while. I've done WoW CB and it was a great geame, highly PvP oriented, solo friendly, with a good story backround. Many people say that WoW graphics sucks but it's not true. it's not realistiic as EQ2 graphics is but it is still beautiful. Just in a different way, you basically feel like you play fantasy cartoon, and it was a goal of Blizzard, not to copy but to go a different way.

On the other hand EQ2 is fantasy reality. it's a parallel world with all its attributes and problems. It is highly solo-unfriendly (btw as EQLive used to be), it's more powergaming-oriented, that's why there are RP servers to choose from, the graphics is stunning because of details you can see, there is also some kind of story background , but itt's not the powerpoint of EQ anyway.

What both games have comparable are quests. Ypu can't proceed the game not doing them. The difference is WoW quests are easier to make, you don't need group, it's enough to log in to make a couple of solo quests and log off again with a feeling of a well done job. In EQ2 quests are tougher, more group-oriented, taking definitely longer time to do. It took me 1 hour to find a group and another 2 hours to kill Sand Giants and get the quest done. But it's the design of the game: EQ2 is made to to challenge you, you will be happy when you make a tough quest or kill a high level mob but most of the time till you 40-50th level you'll be swearing that SOE made another thing impossible to play. The beauty of this game is also its difficulty, cause this will drive you to start the game again and just do it, do it, do it.

So it's up to you. WoW is basically PvP solo game, EQ2 is Pe group game. They are completely different. My advice is: get both game. I know you are going to pay 30 bucks a months but just forget about your local game store, you won't need any afterwards.::::02:: (you won't have time to play another game)

    I hope it helped

EQ2 just holds more interest in my mind, one of the big reasons i chose EQ2 is the graphics. the graphics on WoW are outdated and look ugly, i totally do not like the style they used. thats the main reason i did not choose it, but as has been stated before i cant make your choice for you, only tell you my opinion and let you decide for yourself.

I've beta tested both games. Had decent high lvls in both. WoW is a good game but...

Quests are quite boring compared to EQ2 quests. Graphics in WoW decent, but alot better in EQ2

In all I like EQ2 more than WoW.

try them both make  up your own mind.

Eq2=superior :O.. Much better graphics and content... in wow, you can hit 50 in a day if you paly for a week.. just lkike in shadowbane.. maxed out in 3 days.. why I elft that game...I have like 24 hours into eq2.. and have 2 10's... after that the leveling is less easy and I wanted to see if I liked brawler or pred more :O

Also, in wow... you were lead from quest to quest.. Sure, in eq2 alot of the npcs will want your help.. but at least you can do more quests just by learning another language :O

  • CopelandCopeland Member Posts: 1,955

I've been playing eq2 and i'm absolutely loving it.  It has its problems like all mmorpg's do the first month or so but if you like good graphics and great games this ones the one.   I like the lockout on mobs myself.  No more ks'ing woohoo.  Also i dont understand when people say your forced to group.  SOE designed eq2 specifically to allow for solo game play.  I'm having 0 difficulty soloing and i have next to no downtime.   Give eq a try.   I really dont understand the bickering between the wow and eq2 camps.  They're both dead next year when vanguard comes out anyway.  McQuaid is the genius that started it all add microsoft and BANG!

BTW I'd recommend at least a gig of ram for eq2 or the cities will lag you all to hell.  This game was worth the 4 1/2 years i've been waiting to play it.

Well you have now met one person who played both and gone to EQ2image

Long time beta of both and honestly both are nice games.

My inital plan was to buy both(something i recommend to all sitting on the fence). But when they made policies in WoW to keep euros out of WoW i went for EQ2.

However, now i never even think much of WoW simply because i am having a blast in EQ2.A lot of the issues that occurred in beta have been sorted ie the lag and crafting and some annoying bugs that used to exist.

Also the community seems to be even more mature then in the beta.I now find myself talking off topic about things that intrest my age group ie mortgages, how work sucks, politics, old ninetendosimage etc which is a big thing for me since i always rate interaction so highly in any mmorpg..

Bottom line both good games and only way you can tell which u prefer is to try both out and there is no other way to tell.

If you return the EQ2 and get WoW you might have missed out on a game you love and ifyou don't get the WoW same thing other way round.

EQ2 is a fun game. I am having a blast playing a druid. About WoW, I can't say much, except that I will be playing it as well. It is a fun game too. I couldn't make up my mind which I wanted to dedicate my time to, so I decided to play them both. ::::02::

I'd suggest playing eq 2, i was a huge fan of eq and this game also sucked me in. Now I find most of the people that complain are complaining cause of lag or bad performance. This is due to they have a crappy computer or have one of the nvidia cards that seem to be having alot of driver issues with eq2.

Personally I don't see how wow is even compared to eq, i mean, ITS A CARTOON!...i'm suprised the publisher isnt nicelodian lol...na i have a few friends playing wow...due to they don't have the computer to play eq2.

  • NobulaNobula Member UncommonPosts: 7

I'm very happy to be playing EQ2. I played the WoW beta extensively (both PvP and RP-type servers). I really enjoyed WoW for what it has to offer. I will say, however, that in the few weeks I spent in the World of Warcraft, I saw maybe 70% of EVERYTHING the game has to offer. Don't get me wrong, I specifically ran around with the intention of simply SEEING it all—there is a lot more to do than I did in WoW. I'm simply stating how 'limited' I felt their world is. Unless WoW has a few extra continents up their sleeves, the game will grow tiresome as the grind will rare its ugly head sooner rather than later.

With EverQuest II, the world is genuinely and exceptionally large. I have to say that while both games (WoW & EQ2) have many quests for you to run, EverQuest really seems to excell at offering a vareity of quest LENGTHS—quests range from the 5 minute fed-ex type to 12-hour epic ordeals. There's a bit of content for everyone. Even crafting in EQ2 is a mini-game unto itself. In WoW, the crafting system left me feeling a little cold but I can't honestly say I gave it much of a chance...it just didn't inspire me to use it more.

Graphically, the games are both beautiful in their own ways. WoW has a much more styalized, cartoonish look—exactly like its RTS counterpart in fact. EQ2 is trying (though sometimes misses the mark) for a more photo-realistic look. WoW has lots of 'bloom' effects while EQ2 has its bloom effects off by default but can still be enabled if you prefer the dreamy soft-focus effect.

As for one having PvP and the other not, I believe that WoW will be a boon to those who dig the player vs player scene. EQ2 will not be offering this feature for a good while but I do believe it is inevitable considering that they've structured the game for it (good city/evil city, etc.). As for whether or not I endorse PvP it goes like this: Most of the time, PvP is what a developer slaps into their game to artificially add replay value. With WoW, this is not the case and with EQ2 (if it existed at launch) I think it might have been.

I prefer EQ2 to Wow simply because I feel as if there is more for me to explore and do with EQ2. Sorry for the rhyme, but it's true :)

If you have a copy of EQ2, install and play it. If you're having technical difficulties ('cause your system just can't handle all the beefy requirements, you may want to consider upgrading your RAM first and your graphics card second...I've found that RAM makes much more of a difference). I was going to play both EQ2 and WoW for a while to figure out which one I preferred but am having so much of a good time with EQ2 that I've put my WoW pre-order on hold indefinitely. I really don't have a desire to play anything else at the moment (with the exception of Halo2 and Half-Life 2 of course ;-)

    hope this helped.

This game isn't EQ, but if you liked EQ then you will probably also like EQ2. It takes alot of work to accomplish anything, but it is a ton of fun. This game is beautiful and immersive. IF you want to spend a lot of time playing a really fun game, and you are willing to be dedicated (2 or more hours a day), then EQ2 is a lot of fun. I give it a 9.6... but it's not for everyone.

Having played EQ2 since it was released and having played in WOWs second OB?Stress test, the measure for me is imersion. I need to feel a part of the game, it needs to want me to login. Granted the first week struggling through the game mechanics, initial lag and unfamiliarity with the game was daunting, I have started to really enjoy myself. Maybe it's WOW's graphics and community that turned me off, not sure. And to be fair, I really did not play it as much as I could, part of the reason was I didn;t want to. I am now a Lvl 18 Druid working on my Path of the Wanderer Quest which allows me to be a Wanderer rather than Fury. I am in a guild, albeit small and unorganized, I have attained the rank of Gnoll Hunter and grouping in many new places like Stormhold and Thunder Steppes. Even though the death penalty is frivolous comapred to EQ1, I still find my heart racing and palms sweating when walking alone through areas with high end mobs. The graphics are spectacular. The transportaion system using Griffons is inspiring to say the least. I saw my first mount being ridden by a lvl 21 Warrior. The player crafting is coming along but the economy is just beginning. I have no idea what is in store for me in the coming months but the game is evolving so quickly that anything is possible. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

I've played both EQ2 and WoW, here's a quick run down of my personal feelings that could shed some light on if yo ushould keep the game.

EQ2 has a ton of content, tons and tons of content, yo ucan level purely on quests and a lil hunting or lvl by xp grinding with a group somewhere.  It offers both ends, I like doing both since some of the bigger quests require groups to even finish, like anything taking you to Firemyst is a group.

WoW has...well there's not alot of quests for low lvl and what there is usually sucks to a point anyway. why do i say it sucks? Because you get quests that NEVER almost NEVER give yo uanything you can use, so nless they changed it to give an item according to class well quests suck in WoW.

Graphics EQ2 uses shaders out the ying yang for alot of things including bump map visuals and the likes which makes the game incredible if you can handle moving around and running at those settings.   WoW can NOT absolutely can not compare.  It does use high res poly models and decent textures, but it does not use shaders in the same style as EQ.  So if your system has less than 1gig of ram expect to run it as high to very high performance settings, Extreme performance when its busy.   Sony has not lied one bit about the requirements for the game.

EQ2 has HUGE land masses, Antonica alone to do a round trip tour can take up to 20 real time mins to just do a tour of the bigger sites in the game.   WoW the zones especially if you start as a Night Elf are tiny!!

Sony gave us everything they said they would, told us from the start what was broken and tries to address everything with in a timely manner thats of determental importance Sony even restructored the class system when it became apparent through Beta Testers and probably their internal testers that classes were to bland.

Blizzard, even though I love their other games, as proceeded to half implement everything!  Blantantly telling customers we dont care what you say this is how we are doing it.   Changed the death system a million times, make it to where not only does your armor and weapons decay with use but in death as well making the game that much more money intensive on the ingame economy.   As much as a love blizzard these things are seen on their own Beta Forum boards!

I could keep on listing more and more and saying oh buy EQ buy EQ but it really comes down to 1 thing.  What do you want from a game?  Content and Quests or a game that to be honest the way the game design is set up for PvP and what not is very SWG for WoW.  If you like SWG then you might enjoy WoW.  I was hoping for an immersive game with WoW when I did some of the testing for it but thats not what I got, PvP wasn't even working in the game at the time and any throw in of pvp now will be rushed for PvP players.

WoW isn't a horrible game, but I wouldn't recommended it to the People I know in RL that play MMO's so I can't heartedly recommend it to people on here either.

I played the WoW open Beta/final stress test and I thought it was a very good game.  My overall opinion would be it is fun, but slightly dumbed down and made accessible to everyone.

I am currently playing Everquest II and I absolutely love it.  Yes there are design decisions that were made that some people may not like, but for me and many others it makes the game so much fun, jam packed with content, and beautiful to look at (just make sure your system can handle it or you'll get jaded like a poster above did).

There were design decisions made in WoW that pretty much took what was out there in most mmorpgs and made them better in some way.  Everquest II took their vision, from the original and then added some innovative designs, and they came up with an amazing game that will appeal to many gamers but some will not like it.  The reason I say WoW is dumbed down is because it was made to appeal to most gamers, it didn't really take any chances, but it is amazing how it is still so much fun while being so bland, with cartoonish graphics and silly characters and voices (they were funny, though).  A perfect example is this:

WoW - you want a quest?  Ok, run around for a minute and when you see a stationary NPC with a bright yellow exclamation point over their head, go talk to them, you've got a quest.  The quests are ok, they give nice rewards, but I often didn't really feel like I was doing anything important.

Everquest II - NPCs are scattered everywhere, they walk past you, they talk to you sometimes, they look like they are doing their own thing with a mind of their own.  You must talk to them and find quests on your own by exploring.  The quest are believable and make sense, often leading to more content and background story about the game.
