I tried two professions, rogue and predator and leveling was painfully slow. Also I never could get any credits. I never did pay the 5 silver for a week of maintenance on my apt. Down time was bad too, I never did figure out if there was some spell a non-mage could buy to allow me some basic heals.
How is solo play in WoW ? Which prof provides a decent mix of being wanted by groups and also can solo at will ?

Every class can solo WELL in WoW, extremely good fun.
Only reason to group in WoW is for Fancy Loot, Elite Mobs, Quests and some Dungeons.
Grouping, I played a Hunter, Mage and Paladin, never had any trouble getting a group cos of my class but 3 weeks of OB isnt enough to really tell.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
I think ALL classes can solo in WoW, it makes it alot nicer when you cant find someone (or whin you are a loner like me ).
Oh the thing is you will level faster if you do the quests, if not it takes almost as long as other games (EQ, Lineage II, DAoC, and maby EQ II)
you must not have really tried in Eq2, because i was just soloing through 2 lvls this morning, i was lvl 13 1/2, and got to 15 1/4 about. barely got below 50% on any encounter, that may because i'm a shammy , but regardless, i was talking to my friend (a warrior), soloed just the other day through 3-4 lvls. Soloing doesn't take forever, it sometimes takes less time than grouping, and the rest of the time it is just as fast.

My interpretation whilst testing EQ2 is that it's designed to focus on group interaction rather than solo play. Even some of the Documented interviews have stated this was a key factor to EQ2. and that the community was founded around this. Without PvP, i can then understand why this is.
World of Warcraft's main focus (imo) was not only group and raid intereaction but also soloing for every possible class in the game for complete balance regarding PvP.

Hrmmm, care to share the experience after 20, eh? No one really ever shares after that point. After beta testing it, I know why.
World of Warcraft? Any class can solo all the way to 60 with reasonable effort. It may not be as fun and you won't be able to experience some fun content like instances, but it is totally doable.
I've encountered many quests where I've had to group in WoW because there weren't enough people around to clear the big mobs. So I would call out if someone was doing this quest, get a few replies, get the group together and we would all work together to complete our quest.
This, I must say, is a lot of fun. In the end, we all decided to go on a raid together. It was a great evening. Part of my reason for going with WoW is I am able to have fun soloing AND grouping.
i like the system as it is..
a game thats entirely soloable is great.. however, the higher end elite quests and some of the more difficult quests which involves camps of creeps make grouping fun and easy..
no longer do i have to stick with that one good group.. we can finish the quest.. maybe do another, disband and move on to another area to do some easy soloable quests or return to a npc for a quest turn-in.. without having to worry about not being able to find another party for a quest..
cant find a party for an elite quest? fine.. go do some other quests and wait until more people get to the elite quest.. what was that? cant find people that need the quest? ask people on your friend list to help you out.. it works half the time, if not.. find better friends..
as for xp sucking when you group.. if you do the right quests and fight well together.. your xp shouldnt take a big hit.. in fact since youll be getting better equipment from group quests.. youd probably go faster than you were before..
bottom line is.. WoW is fun.. and there is always something to do whether you log on for 10 minutes, an hour, 10 hours or some insane amount of hours.. im hooked and suffering from withdrawal..
I can't speak for EQ2, but WoW can be solo'ed the whole way. I'd say both are probably pretty similar because with enough effort you can solo in any game you want to. Its just easier to group normally, and the whole point of even having the MMORPG's is to play with the other people with you (guilds and other features like pvp).
If you want a game where you just solo and never want to group just buy like morrowind or something.
i had a 30 monk in eq2 beta, you cant solo any resonable exp at that lvl nor any lvl past 20. Its the same as eq1, you must group.
