Lord of the Rings Online: Playing the Auction House - How to Sell

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com Lord of the Rings Online Correspondent Andrei Harnagea writes this look at the Auction House in Turbine's game and how best tot ake advantage of it.

Part 1 How to sell-

If I were to tell you right off the bat the three most important steps to take in order to maximize your gain on the auction house, it would undoubtedly be; timing, timing and timing. In-game economics works very much the same as in real life, and that is through a supply and demand system. Scarcity leads to high prices and abundance has you trying for days and days on end until you give up and lower the price to a point of no profit. Well, the question is, could such a system be somewhat predicted? Is a simulated economy with no material gain easier to control than the stock market? In some ways yes, and I will be sharing some of my discoveries so far concerning the best methods of selling and buying on the auction house. It is important to also take note of different server populations as well as the majority of players playing from a specific time zone.

Loved to play AH in LOTRO ... made some good gold too

Basically its all about putting item to maximum time, and than putting buyout slightly higher than bidding price.

Also when you sell crafting mats , sell them in smaller bunches.

Instead selling 50 hides, sell 5 sets of 10.

I'm sorry but that's a terrible way to sell. Crafters don't want to buyout 5 stacks of 10 they want them 50 at a time, not to mention it's a pain in the ass going through 10 pages of overpriced small stacks to look for decent 50 stacks. I NEVER buy anything less than a full stack of crafting material.

For leather/hides, I put smaller stacks of TREATED hides for those crafters who need the finished items for their recipes (like weaponsmiths and metalsmiths), but stacks of UNTREATED hides at max sell best.

An excellent Guide indeed. A lot of these things you learn the hardway when stuff doesn't sell and you hit the point where you can sell it to the NPC and just break even.  A must read, even if it isn't perfect, so you can get the general idea down.

  • One important aspect has not been mentioned... Buyer behaviour...

I am seller of Blackberry Tarts, which i make in large quantities and sell in stacks of 15, priced around 70-89s each - which is a lot cheaper than Lembas which has the same effect :) (Power- and Morale- regen even in Combat)

Besides timing (weekends) and amount of stacks bought-out (1-10 a time),there are 3 types of buyers of this "everyday food".

    1. The ones that sort the posts on "Current Price" and buyout the first stack(s) - or very seldom bid on it. 10%

    2. The ones that sort the posts on "Buyout" and buyout the first stack(s). 20%

    3. The ones that do not sort and just buyout the "oldest" stack(s) 70% !!! :o

So in this case i post 80% in 2-day auctions with prices bid-79 buyout-89

    20% i post in 8-hour auctions (3 times a day) bid-81 buyout-82.

Of course i have competing posters... but thats another story at all... ;)

Great article. I've had many successes at the AH, and I guess I was doing this intuitively...

It very much depends on who you are appealing to. There have been many cases where I just needed a few materials in order to complete a recipe and pass a quest or just simply for making an item. I would say the market is pretty split concerning the demand of maximum amounts in any sort of ingredient.

dyes sell way better by unit i find , but for resources i agree that stacks of 50 are way better .but you never know and get lucky with smaller stacks like 25 ou 30 .
