Am the only one that really dislikes the mines. I was totally unable to level in the mines for some reason. I guess it was just being in a closed area or something. I don't know what the issue was excatly, I just didn't like it.
I had a 50 Minstrel and a 50 captain. But I wasn't able to level them up passed level 53 because I just hated the mines so much.
Anyone else out there with the same problem as me? I get this a lot. Even in WoW, like I hate the Elven starting zone and just can't level a new character up that at all. I have to go to westfall/elwynn forest. It's all in my mind I tells ya.

I also found the mines not particular fun to adventure in. I love outdoor zones and the mines actually drove me away from the game for awhile. I am hopeful that the next add-on pack in a year or so will move us back outdoors.

I can't say anything about being inside the mines, since I havent gotten that far yet, but I can say I do understand your point on disliking certain areas and not being able to level there...
I dislike Ered Luin for some reason...I tried to roll an Elf...couldn't get into it......then I tried to roll a Dwarf...couldn't get into that either....to me, Ered Luin is boring and when an area bores me, I just can't level there..
in all truth, I think it's in our minds...I mean, if we tried, we could level their perfectly fine, but because we don't like an area, we just can't get into leveling there...
as for the next big addition to the game, I really hope it's Rohan and Isengard....and Fangorn too!
That would make for some good play!!!

Well, I can agree that the mines for me just wasn't that great. I always had to adjust my gamma so I could see, otherwise I would get headaches. Other than the lighting though I thought it was a pretty open area for being inside a mine. If you can get to level 55 head to Lothlorien and you can get the quests there starting at that level. It's all outdoors and very beautiful.

Ya, certain areas in games I just can't do and I don't know why. It's really weird since it's not even real it's just a game. But certain areas like ered luin i find depressing and I don't have fun. It depends on the music being played, the layout, the weather and even the sky color. A lot of zones in multiple games I just have trouble leveling in. Dark Elf start zone in WoW, dranei zone most of the lower level zones and I hate 3 of 10 new zones in Wrath of the Lich King as well which is why my highest character is only level 78.
I honestly don't know if I'll ever be able to continue in LOTRO because I can't get passed the mines so I can't get passed level 53.

From what I have heard about the mines, I doubt I'll really enjoy them...I mean, LotRO is my favorite MMO ever...well, just because I really love the books, but I wish they would just open up the Gap of Rohan in the next expansion and allow people to skip the mines lol...

You can already leave the mines, there's a zone right after. And they are going to add a ton of new zones obviously. But as it stands, it's unlikely you will be able to go to these zones unless you're level 60. As in, the expansion may increase the level cap to 70 so you will have to level up from 53-60 in the mines.

I think the thing is that Moria is so differnt from the rest of the game and have another feel to it. It takes some time to get used to Moria (or it did for me) and when you learn how it works down there it becomes alot more fun. I tihnk Moria truly feels like the ultimate dungeon crawl, but when you get tired of the darkness log and level an alt instead for awhile. The first zone in Moria is also the hardest and most confusing IMO, when you get Waterworks it opens up abit.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
I dont think you have anything to fear Servase. It has always been important to Turbine to create new zones to level in, making the game as unlinear as possible. Exsample: We know the Orcs are cleaning up the Pass of Caradhas, so that is a very possible way to bypass Moria. Another way, and a very likly one, is for Turbine to develop 50-60 content further south, through Dunland and finally reach Rohan. From the Gap of Rohan and Lorien we will probably see a level raise as we progress through Rohan and towards Gondor.
This is what I really like about lotro, we have so much to look forward to, and while some of us have reach a enjoyment hinder in Mines of Moria, doesnt mean game over.
For me personally, I like the content in Moria and enjoyed my journey to 60 alot. What I dont like about MoM is the Instance cluster/gear grinding turbine created, but thats about story.
I find it strange people find it strange to not be able to play on maps or zones they find repugnant. Its a fantasy game, you want to feel a sense of enjoyment from every aspect, you want to be inspired by the virtual world, to explore it, endure it, understand it. When it bores or depresses you it is not fulfilling that desire. Your heart and mind are integral parts of any activity, and games don't matter more than what goes on inside your heart and mind about them. The problem lies in Turbine's design not you.

You have to do the intro book to moria, then you can pretty much level to 55 with doing old 50s quests, doing eregion completely and completing the books.
You will eventually have to grind to 57 somehow, perhaps by doing the eregion instances (tham mirdain) many times or just killing the higher eregion mobs with rested XP.
But at 57 you can definitely start the Lorien questlines, which will take you to 58,5 and leave you grinding there to 60.
One of my guildies did it this way, because he wholeheartedly hated moria.
If you're just on the dislike-side, you might wanna do some efficient quests (and MOST of the quests in Moria are very XP efficient) and level as fast as possible...
The other question is: What will you do then? All of the endgame 'action' right now is happening in Moria. Every single bit of it. Instances, traits, raids, even trading... This will change, very soon presumably, but at the moment, the 21st hall is _the_ hotspot of the game
M
Moria is a key part of the game right now, and bypassing it will severely gimp any character with end-game pretensions. You can't even swift travel through and out of the Mines without getting some rep with the Iron Garrison, which requires some bit of questing. Anyone who really *hates* Moria should probably be playing a different game, at least for the present. If you're any kind of fan of LOTRO anyway, you'll eventually be back, especially when you seen what's coming.
I really disliked the beginning of the mines, now that im around the waterworks and beyond (im 55) I don't find it as depressing as I used to. Odd thing is I was looking forward to exploring the mines before the expansion came out, unfortunately the game isn't about exploring it is about trait grinding and doing miniscule quests to progress forward. When I am running back and forth in a dark cave looking for quest objectives but getting lost on the terrible map it gets tiring, quickly.
Sorry, I love the mines.
I know a few people who didn't like it but it makes me think.. what did you do in other games that were more dungeon oriented? For instance, whta did you do in diablo or diablo 2?
In any case you don't even have to play in the mines.. just go through and go to the other side and you will find lothlorien.

I'm loving the mines. Finished up Waterworks over the weekend and I'm in the Redhorn Lodes now. I'm still in awe at how massive the mines are. There's still several areas I haven't made it to yet and I'm level 59 already.
I SO agree with you. I didnt like the Mines either. Its all dark and gloomy, I always get lost, with the maze-like character and the tons of mobs, I wasted endless time fighting clueless mobs and seeking quest goals.
I mean, I had some nice vistas, but I will be glad when Lorien comes to EU servers and I can level hopefully at some other place.

I freakin' love Moria. I'm having a hard time not leveling...what with Turbine's stupid XP curve shifts (went from 52 to 54 in one kill) and then their extra XP weekend.
They did a brilliant job with Moria. After spending a bunch of time in there I can almost feel a change in my mood when I step out in to Hollin or out of Dimrill Gate in to the sunshine. We might as well enjoy it, because it will be the only great dungeon crawl in LotRO. The sad thing is, once the next expansion hits Moria will become a ghost town as I'm sure there will be swift ride paths that completely bypass it, and no other reason for us to be there.
You know, I've got to say, it might be how you are playing it.
Most of my experience in Moria is completely about Exploring.
I would take a few quests and then just head off. While I was looking for the quest objectives I would explore whatever I wanted. Sometimes I would find the quest objective and sometimes I wouldn't.
There were play sessions where I just headed off into a direction to see what I found. I think I hit 60 well before I even found the Water Works.
These games are what you make of it. Unfortunately I'm seeing more and more people completely focused on rewards and finishing quests so that they can run to the next quest (not necessarily you, just in general) that they are losing their sense of exploration.
For me, quests are a loose framework for me to work around. If I finish the quest then great. If not, then I didn't really feel that it was interesting enough to finish.
Sometimes I think that it's the players who are their own worst enemies. They go on the rails but can't really get themselves to step off of them once in a while.

I think if you get a sense of depression and real desire to get out, Turbine did something right, don't you? The mines were supposed to feel slightly scary, I mean even Gandalf did not want to go through them. To me the depth of the mines both literally and figuratively is very impressive. I remember the first time I went from Delven View down to the Waterworks on a straight shot, I could not believe the Moria kept getting deeper. I kept wondering how far down the rabbit hole I could go.
I would have to agree with people that the grinding mechanic they put into place makes the Mines tough to deal with, but that is a new mechanic overall to the game and maybe is adding a sense of distaste to the Mines themselves. Unfortunately we can see the grinding is going no where as Loth Lorien has picked it up as well.

I'm certainly no dwarf at heart, I've determined, after adventuring in the Mines! I think the Mines are well-designed, if a bit TOO cavernous at times, so I'd agree that Turbine did a decent job in this regard. They struck a balance between having the scale of the Mines more 'realistic', and abating the claustrophobic feel.
The only technical gripe I have with the Mines is that I've died twice when the game lags while I'm too close to a chasm, and then I launch into the abyss. It's kinda funny now after the fact, but when it happens, it can be frustrating.

I haven't leveled up to the mines yet but I'd imagine I will enjoy it just due to how it will be different. One of the things that disappointed me with WotLK was that Blizzard dropped Azjol-Nerub as a zone which was going to be a fully underground zone.

MoM is the best and worst part of the game at the moment in my opinion. Some of the best and most challenging encounters occur in the mines. I personally love a large portion of the zones there. The worst part to me are the Legendary Items, not because they aren't "cool," but because they are such a hassle. Each one you decide to level up takes about as much work as levelling an alt to level 30 or so. And then there is the bane of Moria, IMO, Legacies and Relics. The random nature of the legacy and relic system makes me want to utterly go insane most of the time.
Anyhow, what makes Moria fun is the group content. Some of that is just a blast, and post book 7, a real challenge. So for those of you fearing Moria, just wait until you get into some of the instances in a good group, and you will see the "fun" part of MoM. Be warned though, being in a bad group or being in groups which just aren't equipped well enough / high enough level will result in you hating the instances.
Lastly, for those of you having trouble seeing in Moria, go into your advanced graphics options and turn up the ambient lighting slider. It defaults to 0.0, which is darker than a worm's behind buried in dirt. Throw it up to 100 and you will think you have a permanent sun attached to your back.
Last piece of advice: If you are going into moria and doing instances, you are going to die, ALOT. You better have bought yourself a house somewhere, because the 20% reduction in repair costs in your home village is going to pay for your house and upkeep inside of a few weeks of Moria instances.
Absolutely hated Diablo, which to me is one of the worst games ever. I have never been a big fan of the dungeon crawls. Atleast Moria is a fairly well done one (in my opinion). I am currently leveling a dwarf champion (56) and a human captain (54) in them. There are parts I like, and parts I hate, but soon enough I will be out of them and into Lothlorien. What I really dread is having to take my elf guardian (44) and or my other alts through the mines. Hopefully, Turbine will soon add a different zone to level 54-60 in. Though would rather have them add a new level 25-35 zone first.
