Adult Community?

ToschaToscha Member Posts: 1

Hello All,

I realize we are talking about games, so I expect they will all attract kids, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend games to me that, in their opinion, have better than average, more "adult" acting, communities? Players who are laid back in attitude would be nice, who, while they enjoy playing their characters well, still recognize it's a game and should be, first and foremost, fun, and who are patient with and friendly to newbies.

My grown kids got me started playing WoW a few months ago. I do really like the game and it's a great way to spend time with them, since they live in another state, but the community is .. well .. not as enjoyable as the game.

WoW is the only MMO I've ever played, but I did play a number of MUDs in college, particularly Two Towers. I enjoy fantasy games. I like the progression and exploration more than the end-game stuff, at least in WoW, although I don't entirely *hate* raiding. I don't PVP. I did some of that in MUDs, but graphics-based PVP is new to me and I don't think I'd be good at it right off. I am not opposed to some element of PVP available, as long as it's not forced. I've never done RP, but I'm not opposed to learning. I don't mind paying for a second game (I will continue to play WoW with my kids) if that means getting a better game in terms of graphics and content. I'd prefer a game that takes some brain power and is not just dependent upon gear to get ahead. I don't mind slow progression as long as it stays fun. I do enjoy solo-ing, and would like some element of that, but it would be nice to not have to avoid groups altogether.

Hmm, is that enough to start with? Thanks for any input you may have.

LOTRO and EQ2 are probably your best bets. Both fantasy, both mostly mature communities( I can't vouch for everyone in a game, obviously), both play very much like WoW. LOTRO especially has a great story and is more about the journey than the destination.PvP is practically non existent, above average crafting, slightly different classes, and looks great. EQ2 has great crafting, a ton of races and classes and good questing. I am playing LOTRO atm, so pimping that a little harder, really loving it.

Give DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) a try, the content is designed for groups which requires some team work and gets rid of a lot of kids, the content is very hand crafted quest PvE focused, with any PvP restricted to taverns where it can be ignored. Character building can seem quite complex to start with and the combat requires a bit more thought than just clicking a skill bar.

I would say without a doubt that Vanguards community is the most adult I have come across with a mention also for Lotro community and for the most part AOC.

I cant honestly believe someone has said Darkfall has the best,I can only imagine that 99% of there forum user's dont play the game as there forum was for sure 1 of the most childish I have ever come across.

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Are you high? That list is utterly ridiculous. Don't listen to this guy. I would recommend Vanguard or EQ2. Although I think Vanguard is a little more adult then EQ2.

Play experiance my change while online.   There are so many things that can change how the community reacts to someone and vice versa.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

From what I've noticed, LotRO and EVE (that's space though so I don't think you'd like it. Also has PvP elements).

However, LotRO is regularly regarded as one of the best PvE games out there, and the community is pretty good too.

If you want a game with a good community, you'd best avoid one based on killing and looting monsters.  That attracts exactly the wrong sort of people.  Instead, find a game that will bore the immature idiots so that they quit pretty quickly, leaving behind a better community.  For example, A Tale in the Desert.

Ryzom for sure.  Havnt played in a while but did notice for some reason it attracted a lot of older people.  Very nice community.  The nicest people play Ryzom for some reason.

This post is intentionally written as to not make any sense what so ever. Thank You Very Much.

Everquest II, Ryzom, Vanguard, and City of Heroes.

I think EQ2 strikes the best balance.  The controls are almost identical to WoW, so you should pick it up almost immediately. The community is mature and friendly, and jerks are fairly rare (I think I was called a "noob" once in EQ2, when the word gets tossed around daily in WoW. I also won't hesitate to join a pick-up group in EQ2, when it usually spells disaster in WoW).

Ryzom is an older game with a small community, so they're a dedicated group. They're in need of new players, so you'll find experienced players in the newbie areas doing nothing but helping potential recruits.

It's been a while since I played Vanguard, and I hear things have been made easier, but in the beginning it was so difficult as to scare away any kids. Or adults with the slightest attention deficit. Or patient adults who've had an extra cup of coffee that morning. Or anyone who isn't a masochist.

City of Heroes has a bunch of adults who don't mind acting immature. And I mean that in a good way. You'll find some serious folks, but for the most part the CoH community is a bunch of smartass clowns. You have to have a sense of humor to enjoy playing a radioactive bodybuilder in full spandex.

EQ2 has a very immature playerbase.

You've gotten some good responses from the previous posters, but just to add my 2 cents as a veteran MMOer:

Ryzom and LOTRO both have great communities. The games are pretty different (LOTRO being more similar to WoW), so I would pick which you think you would like based on the features - I'd think you'd be happy with either community.

Vanguard also has a good community, but the population can be a bit sparse. Pick your server carefully (last time I checked about 6 mos ago, Seradon was the most populated) and you should be fine.

WoW as you mentioned can be pretty traumatic. And I feel I should warn you against Darkfall even though I admit I have never played - there are some horror stories on their forums and some crazy people too (more than I see on the usual LOTRO forum). Maybe the actual in-game population is 180 degrees different, but I would not bet money on it. I

    Happy gaming!

Darkfall might have more older aged gamers playing, but it is not and adult community thats for dam sure.

    Please.....

Darkfall Online has the worst community of any online game. Most of the people playing darkfall online are grown adults that have been in the same guild for 10+ years. Just pop over to the darkfall official forums just to see what I am talking about. After you check out darkfalls official forum, go check out any other games official forums.

EQ2 is pretty nice, so is LOTRO.  Vanguard have a very mature community also, but they game population is abysmal.

So EQ2 is worth giving another try these days?  Population is still decent, there's plenty to do, etc?  I know I always found EQ2s community to be pretty nice.

    Try Eve.

It has a steeper learning curve than most MMOs and most kids are too impatient to stick with it.

Yes,  choose a medium to high population server.  Find a good guild and stay out of the newbie channel (1-9).  There's plenty of good people in EQ2.
