Have our standards for an MMO grown beyond acceptance? For instance, if this game came out with EQ1 graphics... in the EQ1 era, it would be a pretty damn good competitor, but now, the standards are so high that the game is not accepted? I had fun up to level 35 I think is where I got in this game... so I don't know any of the endgame rants, but anyway... I was just thinking that in a different time this game woulda had a cult following.

more than likely it would of been in the same state as it was at launch....to many bugs, memory leaks and the list goes on. but it has come a long way as people have said in the forums. game is "ready for launch or relaunch" now. as for endgame rants, a lot of raid bosses were bugged, a lot bugs were in sieges, and overall there wasn't much endgame content at level 80. so there wasnt anything to do, that is one of the reasons why i left. i was raiding but other than raids there really wanst any point for me to log onto game on nonraid days.
definitly the standards are higher now, which is actually a good thing in my opinion, that really pushes the devs to use their brains and always try to do the extra mile...
but in this specific case of AoC, i think the trolling and flaming lvl is much higher comparing to any other mmo, although many flamers had all the right to do so after the launch disaster, many others are just being pure mean and propagating lies as far as they can, why they do that? and who are they exactly? im not sure, but that could range from someone who cant upgrade his PC to run the game and is blaming it on society to someone who got his sorry a$$ kicked in AoC PvP while he was THE DUDE at another mmo and therfore sees AoC as a serious threat that is gonna bleed his guild from members...
and honestly, i can imagine why a fanboy would be on his favorite game forum praising it, but i just cant figure out why someone who actually hates a game would spend most of his day on that same game forum !
weired stuff going on dude, weired stuff on the mmo world... lol
i think throughout history there have always been those mass numbers of stupid guys with torches and dirty teeths burning everything that they cant understand... and aparently they survived til today ! (i just proved that the evolution theory is not flawless lol)

Having a masters in History I can tell you those angry mobs were a blast and to a point even needed, since they ended up working as a counterweight to political institutions . And you are right, they survived till today and present themselfs every now and then in moments of colective anger or histerya.
More, burning things we don't understand is strangely plesant. Mostly because the tendency to destroy and burn things is in our genes, and if one destroy something that he doesnt not understand, he will never miss it.

If this game came out with EQ1 graphics it would be the class of the field.
The increasingly desperate tone of flamers of this game is a good sign (at least for the game it is).
The game has basically had a complete revamp, since I first played it anyway. Now it is the best current mmo in my opinion.
To those that still use their free time trying to picture this game as a failure; I hope u find a game that will suit your needs, cos to keep flaming this is becoming increasingly sad.
It's double edged though. I try to be a casual gamer, but I keep longing to log on...

If you are looking for PvE game, great music and nice graphic AoC it's something worth to consider, some new encounters are bugged and even some old ones but those you can live with and being repaired. Every class has it advantages and can be enjoyed.
The worst part is no direction in PvP development, one shoting ToS with passive ability that deals more dmg that some classes deal with few step combos, bugged sieges, PvP invulnerabilities stacking so some have such advantages that it makes no fun for opposing force.
Whole guilds farming members time after time just to get pvp experience and buy PvP armors and Funcom not doing anything against it.
I tried it back in February and the game has not changed that much since release. Some bug and performance fixes and some new areas. Hardly a complete revamp. The increasing numbers of "ohmygawd I came back and it is now wonderful" on these forums shows a increasing desperation by Funcom emplyees and fanbois trying to breathe life into the game. Anyway you cut it the game is still second or third shelf, hardly a premium MMO by any means.
I miss DAoC
The first 25 levels are much better than the rest of the game.
The problem with AOC, Warhammer, LOTRO are that they charge the same amount each month as WOW. WOW is just a much better game then the rest (although LOTRO is close) so unless you have an emotional hatred towards WOW, or some 'love' for funcom there is no reason to give up WOW.
I play both AOC and WOW, but if I had less time or money, i'd be cutting AOC first.

All of you overlook one fundamental element:
AoC stretches the very definition of MMO.
With its extreme instancing and its incoherent world, it can be discussed whether this is really an MMO at all.
I don't think my expectations are to high. I liked the game but I didn't stay in it.
Perhaps the issue for *me* is more that I've played this game for 10 years...
I mean that by your mention of EQ1 was a good one. Sure there are different mechanics here and there.. but its still the same old level based etc etc
Can you tell I was a UO fan and didn't really get into EQ as much as my friends? Or that I loved Pre-CU SWG...
I've played two MMO's I really really liked...
and I lost count of how many MMO's I've played that are basicly the same thing over and over and over.
For me (and I mean that just for me) that this is the bigger issue. Then again if this game came out in 2000 it wouldn't have been in a long line of games using the same basic core systems.. so ya it probably would have done much better.
I suppose that just about puts the point on it.
Overall, there's a general sense of ennui among the more veteran members of the MMO community. We've seen it all, so it takes a lot to inspire the sense of wonder and curiosity we look for in an MMO. It's not that everyone wants a clone of their old favorite with newer graphics and a few new features (Though some certainly do). Those looking for a new MMO just want the same feelings of accomplishment and interest that it drew.
As an example, since it's where a good portion of the newer members of the community draw their pedigree, WoW is known for its massive world. And it's not a world of "spaces," either. Few other games can make the boast that it would take the better part of a day to walk (not ride, not fly, but truly walk) from one end of a continent to another, and not encounter a single load screen or unsightly repetition. People can spend an entire day not levelling, not PvPing, not socializing, but simply sitting at a lake fishing, or hammering out some equipment on an anvil, and still feel a sense of accomplishment. Very few can claim, barring an eidetic memory, to remember the exact names and appearances of every single NPC they encounter throughout a given day. I by no means intend to imply that WoW is the greatest game of all time, but, to those who love it (I myself am not included in this number, though I do enjoy the game from time to time), it inspires a sense of immersion that few other games can emulate fully. So, of course, when a person who cut his teeth on WoW, so to speak, (or even spent a good deal of time on it) goes to a more heavily-instanced game, it feels stale and weak. Is the game necessarily worse? Not really. However, it doesn't inspire the same immersion a player has learned to associate with an MMO, and thus falls short.
And so the cycle of ennui sets in in full.
I agree with this guy, AoC is instanced to the point of lunacy.
AoC has a good single player game until you leave Tortage, then it quickly falls apart like Amy Whinehouse at the Priory. Before you know it you're waist high in your own excrement shivering like a leaf and screaming for someone to log you out of this nightmare!
AoC doesn't qualify as an MMORPG in my opinion, it seems to be more of a CORPG similar to Guild Wars. Atleast that's the impression most people I know get after playing it for a month.

Really? I never tried this game but seen the beta, and heard all the bad crap about it. Was scared to buy it. I bought it like 2 days ago and don't regret it at all. It’s amazing; the whole thing just feels like an RPG but in a MMO setting. They did a great job, I have had no issues, I kind of prefer the instanced areas somewhat as you don't have to worry about someone killing what you need, and in other cases they can actually make quests modify the game world because it’s instanced and will not affect anyone else. It has higher potential for more interactivity with the instanced system the way it is. You can hate on the game all you want, but fact remains it’s a worthy game and if it was not for the launch issues and such, it would be near the top. People need to come back and give it a try and new players alike should try it.
People who speak negatively fall into one of three categories, Old players that quit due to launch issues, and have not tried since and love to insult the game, Old players that left and came back and continue to insult it based on hard feeling left from launch or related issues, and those from other MMOs that have not even tried to and want to tear it down. Those are the three main types that will tear it down. I am not a FunCom employee or a fanboi, I speak my mind and I am truthful in doing so, however blunt I may be.

Ya man, having a constant stream of players playing around you incessantly is so isolating isn't it.

Instead of taking one statement that belonged to bigger statement to warp my words, actually read what I said. Because of how it is you can do more with the environment and questing. I like how it is, if you are in a guild or have friends just bring them along, no need to diss the game because it’s doing something a bit differently than other MMOs.

You started two days ago, are you out of Tortage yet? level 1-20 is a great experience, for sure. the problem was that the further you got from that, the more the game went downhill. (it has supposedly greatly improved, i plan to resub someday to find out myself).
maybe you should play to level cap at (or at least into the 60's) before you make any personal judgement on the game, or the people that critisize it , rather than just imply that they are only doing so out of some kind of malice, and nothing else.
AOC is a very divisive game thats for sure but for some (myself included) it just sort of clicked and drew me in... I nearly dropped it through the bad days (july to sept technical problems) but stuck with it and am still playing and and generally enjoying it. Its far from perfect and could learn a lot from some features of other games but its also the longest MMO sub i've ever had (timewise I played WOW and COH/COV for longer but not in one continuous chunk like AOC). Liking / disliking a game can be a very personal thing and as the MMO market gets more diverse you are unlikely to see lots of big winners - more likely 1 big winner (currently WOW but it will be replaced.. probably by WOW v2) and hopefully some some 'niche' games with loyal fan bases that allow them to grow and develop over time (like EVE). AOC has missed its chance to be a WOW killer for many reasons but I don't think it deserves to die - many of the people that do play it like it a lot and will be sad if it goes the way of Tabula Rasa. I think there are four reasons why it worked for me...
1) The graphics and sound are excellent (on my rig) - the music is haunting, the sound effects meaty and atmospheric, the best areas look fantastic and hide the instancing well and the animation on npcs was very realistic. Of course, I went through much pain with the graphic / memory problems like many others in the first few months but happened to upgrade my PC last summer and most of the issues went away. I chnage my Desktop every 18 months to 2 years - If I had not decided to upgrade until say this year, AOC would have long been uninstalled from my old pc and gathering dust on my shelf due to 'unplayable framerates'.
2) The combo system was interesting - I tend to play rangers / melee characters and like the combo system - it added just enough complexity to take it one notch above clicking (of course, they should have dones something for the magic users two which basically still is click click click). I think this is something that other new MMOs should look at and improve upon.
3) Despite my long sub, I am very much a casual player - I play it intensely for a couple of days in a row, then real life dictates I don't get to go back for say a week or two, so no power levelling to 80 in a month or so for me. I'm also a class hopper and have 5 or 6 alts, with 3 of them being my main focus at the moment.. all this means I STILL haven't reached the lvl cap / lack of content issues yet... and probably won't for a good few months yet (for all of my main alts in any case).
4) By sheer luck, I fell in with a good guild about 3 months ago. This is absolutely crucial.. my old guild was dying and It was getting lonely.. I do a bit of PVP but mainly I pve.. but I like company :-). If I hadn't fell in with the Celts and made some good friends, I wouldn't feel the urge to log on for guild meetings etc.
For comparison, my time with Warhammer was much less enjoyable.. I was ok with the style of the graphics but the music was bland and the animations offputting...the combat was click based, and I failed to find a good guild on my server. Finally, a billing problem with GOA last novemeber drove me away, probably for good... which is a shame because I really liked the PVP scenarios.
There's a great deal of serendipity involved in my liking AOC (changing pc at just the right time, finding a good guild, my slow levelling actually letting funcom patch in content before I hit grinding problems etc) and I can see how others might not have the same experience and dislike AOC so intently (the launch bugs etc were a disaster, theres no getting away from that) but its the right game for me at the moment - I want a bit of 'low fantasy' and conan does that for me. Whats more.. I look at the horizon and struggle to get worked up about any of the new games coming down the line.. I'd like something a bit different to conan, perhaps something more modern / Sci Fi - I'll try a few out of course (Champions, Star Trek, maybe biowares Star Wars) but at the moment they don't seem very compelling / its too early to tell how they will turn out. I'm not a funcom fanboy and can see they've done a lot of things wrong but ironically I'm quite interested in their next MMO (Secret World)... I just hope they do a better job of launching it WHEN ITS READY but secretly fear that they will mess it up again / go bust before it gets there :-(

those were my issues too -- the mid and upper game was *lacking* for content at release
I've read that has been addressed but I'll resub in the future
