I think you will find in many cases that has changed.

there is even a dev joke about it in Lothlorien. You have to gather meat for an upcoming celebration and one of the elves asks you to kill some boars, then states "what? You don't kill boars where you come from?"

The devs knew that there were too many boars and made many changes that made sense. There are still boars, wolves and bears, espcially in the lower lvl elf/dwarf areas but as you level you will find other things.

And there are no boars, wolves or bears in Moria.

This game is probably one of the best, if not the best PvE game.  I love everything about this game except one thing, grinding for traits.  This is the part of the game I do not like, however, this does not keep me from playing it.

I'm sure i wasn't the only one who commented about this on their exit interview :P

One other thing bothered me and that is the quality of aggressive npc faces on humans. They look rather poorly drawn. I suppose this is done to improve performance, but i like it where everything is well done.

    Thanks alot!

In my opinion is a really good game for pve roleplayers. The community is mostly helpfull and mature. You may find some lore picky guy and some anoying kid, but its usually a good community.

I just don't understand posts like this.

So does that mean that hardcore l33t games are for psychopaths and degenerates who needed more hugs from mommy and daddy and are now taking out their frustrations on unsuspecting gamers because they have absolutely no social skills and the anonymous nature of the internet allows them to get away with flexing their e-peens and running off their mouths else they would keep their mouths shut and live out their lives of rage filled but quiet desperation?

    Of course not.

If you are bored with it you are bored with it. I can easily understand this. But the rest...

I started playing the game last night for the very first time.

I'm a total PvPer. Been playing WoW on PvP servers since 4 months after it was released (not the entire time...I've taken breaks here and there but always go back when the expansions are released). I've also played SWG, AoC, POTBS, EvE, COH/COV, and now Darkfall (although that one has been brief since it's only been out for a few weeks). Always PvP all the time.

At the risk of losing some of my PvP cred...I've recently started to get tired of endless PvP. I decided I might like to try PvE for a change. I rolled a character on an AoC PvE server but got bored at grinding through the same zones again for the umpteenth time. And I couldn't imagine starting over on WoW again.

So I got the LOTRO box last night on the way home from work. Installed it, got it updated, and gave it a whirl. I rolled a Champion and got to level 8 which most people would probably agree is too early to make any real judgement but still...my immediate impression is...I like it.

The graphics are fine, the action on the controls is fine, and the immersive aspect was very good. I also like the fact that it seems to be much more story-centric than other games. All the time I've spent in WoW and I couldn't even summarize what the overall story to the game is.

I'll probably do my usual and roll 3 or 4 classes to 20 before making any long term commitment but my early reaction is it's a good game and I'm finding both the PvE and the non-grinding aspect to be refreshing and relaxing.

Anyway...just an opinion from a brand new convert...for what it's worth.

I have played LOTRO for some time now. I think it is a great PVE story driven game with lots to do. The crafting is simple enough anyone can get into it and the PVP (Monster play) is a novel way to pass the time once in a while.

Many of the "instanced" story lines are excellent!!! Well written and executed.

No offense mate but the game never ever released as a pvp title, they had that little monster play(I honestly dont know if they have added to it or not)though that was just an "extra" this game was always released as a pve title.I would be shocked if any player picked up this title with views to pvp, though having said that maybe you did :)

He asked for an opinion, I was just giving him mine ;)

Yes mate and you are entitled to it :) I was just adding that anyone that is seriously looking to play LotRo wouldnt be doing so for the pvp aspect.

If you read the original post, he asked about pvp  OO

I know he did.....I was just adding to your post that no-one should look to this game for pvp,it is a pve game and would be foolish to buy the game if you are more into pvp....

The we agree, pvp in lotro is a 1/10 ;)

PvP isn't even in the game, it's PvMP and it isn't that bad. LOTRO well never have PvP and thank god. Most PvPers I have found and mental cases.

I think LOTRO is a true RP game myself. I dont do much RP but the immersion in this game is very good. As for PVP i did it in WOW after i got bored with the game then after a month or so of that gave it up also. So RP, PVE and a good community is what i found to be the strong points of LOTRO.

I only played LoTRO for about 6 weeks before I really got bored and didnt feel like logging in ever again........In my short time here is what I thought:

PVE: 6/10 The books were alot of fun...To me probably the best part of the game.......The quests got old very quickly, especially playing multiple alts........

PVP: 1/10 I just did not like the entire monster play system......I found it boring and uninspiring

Group Activities: 5/10 IT depends on what you like really.......My problem with most group activities was that it involved players much higher in level doing all the killing....basically everyone else was just along for the ride......Most of the people were friendly and we had some laughs but overpowering the quests and books just made the game feel so easy.

Raids: 3/10   I only made it as far as level 38 and did not do rift or any of the otehr raids........I did belong to a guild that raided all the time though......I had a good friend that went on many of these...He was a former WoW/EQ vet and he said that LoTRO was a joke when it came to raiding.......HE said it was just MMO lite when compared with a real raiding game.

Endgame:  3/10    Liek I said I myself only made it to 38 but had many friends at max level.......They all pretty much said the same thing that LoTRO was very weak in end game (this was pre MoM)........Several of my friends also quit once they hit 50 saying there was not much left for them to accomplish.....

Final Thoughts: I had played many MMOs before I tried LoTRO......If it was my first or second game I probably would have liked it alot more, but I had played so many other games that were jsut so much more challenging that LoTRO felt very easy.........The lore is very good and it has some fun things like playing music, but really the game itself is not anything special........

I won't rate it the way you've asked, but I will say if it interests you try it out. It's a good solid game, but you won't know if it's for you until you've actually played it.

The music in this game is amazing... havent seen too much about it on the previous pages - but it totally helps you feel immersed in the world  - great game.

I'd put it at 7/10. The epic books are great, but most of the really cool quests in the books are fellowship (group-only) and it can be quite hard to get a fellowship going, even if you are in a kin. It's particularly hard at lower levels to get a full fellowship of your own level, it's much easier to get a boost from someone. If it's the jillionth time you've done the quest, fair enough, but it's frustrating for new players who want to take time to see the content. This game is about stopping and smelling the roses, therefore it can be an issue. If you do manage to get a fellowship, some of the instances run like parts of a movie, which is pretty cool. For the other bulk PvE, I would say that WoW is actually better and puts more creativity into their quests than LotRO. I actually got annoyed with a bunch of the Shire quests because they're timered delivery quests in which you have to avoid some NPCs. They're really time-consuming, irritating, and you don't really get much for doing them. It's great if you have some time to knock off and don't mind being some hobbit's delivery bitch, but otherwise they're pretty pointless and form a large amount of things to do in the Shire. There are also a lot of 'bring me a shrubbery' style quests and other fairly domestic, borderline undignified quests that bring down the overall PvE score in my eyes. However, I haven't come across anything quite as immature as WoW's poo searching quests in TBC. What is good is that the way the quests are written you can explore areas as much as you want to, which for me means that I can hunt more like how I used to in older MMOs. I find that a hell of a lot funner than always going straight from A to B to C and only paying attention to mobs that are at each point in the quest.
    PVP: x/x
I haven't tried it. I got turned off from trying when I heard from a few sources that you actually have to PvE grind a lot on the monster characters anyway and they're never as powerful as the freeps (the 'good' player characters). I can't really comment more than that.
    Group activities: x/x
9/10. I think LotRO shines as a group-based game. The character classes are varied, every class brings value to a group unlike in some games where classes tend to be either good as a solo class or group class. There are a lot of interesting game dynamics that promote fellowships, such as completing the movie-like epic storylines, doing difficult fellowship quests out in the world, initiating fellowship manoeuvres, and playing in general much more strategically than in most recent MMOs. There is a decent LFF tool and an LFF channel. People are usually pretty willing to do fellowship quests and some of the funner ones I've done have been in the good ol' Barrow Downs area. The downside though is that it can be really hard to get your fellowships set up for certain quests.
    Raids: x/x
    Haven't tried, can't comment.
    Endgame: x/x
Haven't reached there yet, but I think it's a bit concerning that so many high level characters are wearing exactly the same sets of gear. That to me means there isn't a heck of a lot to do other than a couple of raids. A lot of people I know with high level characters tend to grind out crafting or getting the rest of their deeds and traits done or rerolling alts. They go over content they missed while leveling up. End game PvP doesn't seem to be an option.

    Thanks alot!

This game is definitely worth a try. It's not entirely my cup of tea, but it has a lot of merit.

Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.

  • GinazGinaz Member RarePosts: 2,572

PvE:  I'd say an 8/10.  Theres some pretty good quests early on and the book quests are fun.  However, there is a lot of grind quests, esp. in the starting areas, like kill X number of bears/boars.  The quests do get better once you leave the starting areas.

PvP: Like someone said earlier, there is no real PvP, its Player vs. Monster.  I'd give LOTRO version of pvp a 2 or 3 out of 10.  It really is horrible.  The monsters (creeps) are so unnderpowered when compared to regular characters (freeps), and this only got worse when Moria was released.  Creeps stand almost no chance against freeps 1v1 or in even groups.  Besides, I don't like playing a different character for pvp.  I want to pvp on my main but some people have to play as monsters for this to work.  AS far as I know, theres only the one area in the game that you can pvp in too.  Even with WoW, you can pvp anywhere in the world, plus you have battle grounds, arenas, pvp objectives in zones (Like Haala in Nagrand) and a whole new pvp only zone (Wintergrasp).  Don't get me wrong, pvp in WoW is not that great but its a whole lot better than LOTRO, and thats saying something.

Group Activites:  7 or 8 out of 10.  You don't have to join a group doing quests to enjoy group activites.  Theres lots of oppurtunities for rp and with the music system people gather together to put on group musical performances.

Raids. I can't say because I haven't gotten there yet.  I have heard that theres isn't very many of them and they aren't the greatest but I can't say for sure.

    Endgame:  See comments on raids.

A couple other points.  Crafting is fairly simple but it can be fun.  Theres a working economy and the auction house is pretty good.  The community is by far the most friendly and helpful I've ever run across in an mmo.  So if someone is looking for a fun, casual pve centered game with a great community I don't think they'd do much better than LOTRO.  Just don't go there looking for pvp or WoW-like end game raiding.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

I would agree...tried WoW and was not that impressed.

    PVE 9/10

PVP 3/10  (as stated before this is not a PvP game)

    Grouping 8/10

RAIDs 8/10 (End game RAIDs just lair now with 6 boss coming probably in June).

End Game 6/10 (The rad armour instance grind is getting very old)

The storyline is one of the most solid (if not the most solid).  I just wish Turbine would get back to what they did right in SoA (as posted in the game suggestions) and fix the bugs.

So far I have really enjoyed playing this game.  The community is great, and helpful; Fellowships are easy to find most of the time (I know some people say they can't find any, but maybe I have been lucky..)

I have also seen lots of people Role-Playing in the Prancing Pony and other inns across the world, so that is also a big part of the game.  RP is something the OP failed to mention, and ask people to rate.

PVE: 9/10 -- Easily the best PvE I've experienced. Where WoW quests read like newsprint (just the bare facts to get you through), LOTRO quests read like small short fiction stories. There's a nice balance of Open world content and instances. Some of the environments are downright breathtaking. Even with over two years of playing, I find myself in awe of the vistas I come across.

PVP: 6/10 -- Hard to rate PVP in this game.  It's really well done if you're new to PVP, or if you want a casual PVP experience. It offers a great experience for the PVP novice. Which is not to say that if you're a PVP veteran you won't find fun in the system. But if you're looking for more advanced PVP play, something like DAoC, WAR, WWII Online, or Darkfall will be more your speed.

Group Activities: 8/10 -- Plenty of small Fellowship quests, large group quests, a few raid quests; or finishing deeds as a group. Putting a musical ensable together can be fun as well with LOTRO's music system. There's a few mini-games for groups as well -- tag, horse racing.

Raids: ?/10 -- LOTRO isn't a raid-centric game. Having said that, I haven't participated in any of the Raids that do exist, so I don't really know how they fair.

Endgame: 8/10 -- I realize quite a few players blast through the content, and then complain about the Endgame. My highest level character is 55lvl, and I'm a day one player. Play the game, enjoy the journey and your 'endgame' will be fantastic.
