Do these games have a future?

Seems like they all are the same now. Not to much creativity. I wont be able to level from mobs much longer, I think they need to make a new system for leveling, I dont know what but they need to. I cant stand soloing, boring as hell, but I dont like to kill 1000 mobs to level either. Maybe if they could make PvP a way of leveling, I dont know. Any ideas?

They do, but people don't seem to often realize that programming technology just isn't there yet.

You can't cure cancer in a day, the wheel of technology concerning MMO development will slowly churn beyond its current limitations.  In the meantime, you can choose to enjoy current offerings or just maintain a patient vigil.

"Maybe if they could make PvP a way of leveling"

That would make an interesting idea. There would be a lot of issues to consider that appear in current pvp format. Griefing, rez killing and so on, but perhaps with some clever design these things can be overcome.

If a company came out with a game like that im sure many people would try just outta interest, as it is now, pvp is rarely the central theme in an MMO

Well since the traditional steak and potatoes mmorpg concept has worked in the past, it is still being used. Could you be more specific on the games you think don't have a future?

It will not work. There already is a MMORPG that allows you to gain experience and level up doing PvP. It is called:

     Vagrant's Quest

They are working on a VQ2.

Powergamers rule by shadowboxing with multi-accounts. Even players who do not have multi-accounts simply let a friend kill them over and over for xp. image

In Guild Wars, the PVP leveling is already in. In the battle arena, you can kill others and get exp::::24::

The reason innovation in the computer game industry is so scarce is for the same reason there's barely any originality in the movie industry. Companies can't afford to risk developing highly original games without any guarantee they'll sell.

MMORPGs are hit hardest out of all the computer game genres because they depend on as large a userbase as possible and by developing an MMORPG, the software company is binding itself to a several year support commitment.

One example of a game that bucked the trend is eGenesis' MMO A Tale in the Desert which, together with its sequel, has proved to be moderately successful despite breaking drastically with MMO convention and promoting player interaction and levelling without having to kill anything or even having the option to.

Blizzard have very cleverly carved a niche based on perfecting and polishing the best ideas of the RTS and RPG genres in their Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo games, and they've now applied the same approach to the MMORPG genre with WoW.

There is a game due to come out next year that does break a few of the conventions for MMORPGs.  Wish says that they have all but eliminated the level grind by going with pure skills instead of a class/archtype system.  They have also flattened the level gap which should allow players that are farther apart in skill to still be able to group up and be effective.  Another convention Wish is breaking is questing.  They say they are going to provide "Live Content" quests and tasks that will actually be unique and change the game world.  If you do something special enough you even get your name in the paper, and have NPC's talk about you.  They say they are also going to have player controlled towns that will first have to be taken from enemies, and also defended from attack.  The housing and marketing in these towns will be controlled by the players alone.

Now I know a lot of this is still yet to be seen as Wish hasnt even started its Open Beta 2 testing yet, but if they can carry through on what they say they are going to do, it should be a unique gaming experience compared to the other "cookie cutter" games out now.  I know these things will be hard to do.  The Saga of Ryzom was supposed to introduce a few of these things also.  Unfortunately SoR rushed to market without most of the content being in the game.  They also made the game mechanics function so that it requires you to be a warrior first and formost.  Enough about SoR.

If you want to see all the new stuff Wish is trying to bring to the field you can check the link from this web site.  They have a lot of information on their web site.  The Developers Journals are full of neat info.  So in short there are a few games that are trying to change the playing field and introduce new and hopefully more involving game play.

Sad thing is why bother to change things when players of our time buy and play these grindfests and doesnt mind game beeing a mindless brain-numbener?
It´s not like gaming companies anymore care anything but money and profits. Gotta love capitalism in a field where it doesn´t belong: Providing innovative consepts and generating enjoyable experiences to humans over the world, gaming.

It´s long forgotten why people play. Now it´s seen as a potential money pipe for companies who then pushes these no-brainer-hack´n slash-cookie-cutter-grinder-"MMORPG"´s like there´s no tomorrow.
Oh but there is a tomorrow for games like mentioned before.
We gamers choose what games companies produce. Don´t believe me?
I can say this if we/you don´t buy these games, nobody would manufacture them. Hell why would them? no money from those anymore. Yeah we are the sinners here, sad but true. When enough people are bored to these games, and stops supporting and voices enough their opinions, things will change.
Thats a good part in capitalism in gaming industry, payers can make a difference, but only in masses.

p.s Ohmygod what a rant! oh well read or skip

Im definately looking forward to Wish. Ive read bits and pieces about, im hardly devoted, but ive found some interest in what ive read. By the time it enters the later phases of beta ill probably be looking to give WoW a rest. I played SOR for a couple weeks after retail. I should be pissed i paid the equivalent of $100 AU for the experience, but i dont hold any recentment towards the game. I just got sick of not enough people playing it. It just got so fully caught up in the hype of EQ2 and WoW that it was largely overlooked. Being a European title didnt help it any, although EVE and AO have proven you can have successful Euro titles. The abandoning of Dragon Empires was probably the sadest thing to develop in the genre over the past year for me. I thought Codemasters was on a winner there, although it was very similiar to so many other titles i guess.

SoR is a very good game, new additions improve it. If i had the patience to wait for higher player numbers id still play it. It deserves more recognition....lets hope they survive and eventually prosper like AO has.

Back to Wish...really looking forward too it, and off course Tabula Rasa. Nobody mentions the great one and his game in the words anymore.

You get experience for PvP in the upcoming game Dark and Light.

I don't expect griefing there either since only two sides can fight it out. If you don't want to do PvP that night just stay away from the contested areas.
