Lord.BachusLord.Bachus Member RarePosts: 9,686

Insiders will know...

38 studios, thats the company of  Curt Schilling, Todd MacFarlane and RA Salvatore

They must be making a stunning MMO game that should release somewhere next year.

But you never ever hear or see anything about the actuall game itselves..

So whome can enlighten me and tell me what to expect ?

Its a very well kept and guarded secret.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I hope with Salvatore on board that will eliminate any "drizzts" running around in the game.  You losers who don't use an ounce of your imagination and copy names.    :P

MacFarlane and Salvatore.....nice combination, I expect great things from these two.

I hope the story element (Salvatore) leans more on setting, factions, and background lore and not on forced player destiny.

In other words, I hope we see a vibrant and dynamic world with reasons for everything that is, and not some forced storyline cutscene quests.

Big names are not enough to make a compelling game.

Woah, this is quite a gaming company :o

Quite interested to see what kind of MMO this "Copernicus" will be! :)

    This man speaks wisdom.

Perhaps these guys will make a good game.

Or perhaps, they will join the loser ranks of Brad McQuaid, Richard Garriott, Bill Roper, and others.

Is this really a secret?  38 studios have been making splash announcments about new hires and its 'all star' lineup for awhile now.

Looks very promising, but only 60 mill? Wow – maybe 10 years ago. Good to see they got some good creative talent on board.

    EEK!

    R. A. Salvatore and Todd Mc Farlane talk about project Copernicus.

Mr Salvatore's part of the talk does not make me feel all fuzzy inside.

The key word here is "Iconic"

Could be a decent game. But I wouldn't hold my breath...after all Schilling is a WoW player...so the game will prolly end up a WoW wanna be.

    Got a link?

I mean Schilling was pretty tightly connected to EQ2.. to the point they had a statue of him to duel on the "newb island" for a charity event a few years back.

In fact many of their employees came over from SOE.

I guess I'm not exactly sure what you are getting at here...

Even Salvatore was an EQ1 player.. I have no idea on McFarlane.

The game may be crap it might not be.. but I guess I missed the WoW tie in.

MMO's don't have enough average - awsome  people to be called a "Scene". Mostly below par.

Did I just diss everybody who loves MMO's including myself? .... damn I'm going to go sit in a corner

No kiddin there.Remember that game company that was formed years ago by big name game designer rockstars like John Romero?Yeah me neither, I just remember one of the teaser ads said " John Romero wants to make you his bitch", which I guess was kind of true if you were dumb enough to buy there product

Then they came out with a crappy rts game followed up by  a POS called Daikatana. I do remember they cost Eidos millions.

And those 3 names you mentioned have no game design experience.

Not that i think it matters that he plays WoW or not, but since you asked for a link and I happen to have it... I thought I'd post it.

"Curt Schilling: I am a hopelessly hooked World of Warcraft player now. I resisted the urge, trying to defend my stance as a ‘hard core’ gamer for years. I was an EQ and EQ2 gamer for the first half of my MMO life, and I gradually worked my way into WoW and have realized that entire ‘hard core’ to ‘casual’ gamer battle is irrelevant to me. I want to have fun, and WoW is fun."

The one, major, thing in 38 Studios' favor is that it was founded not as a means to make a quick buck, but because Curt Schilling wanted to make a game beccause he really likes playing MMOs.  That in no way means the game will be any good.  There is every possibility that the game will be a horrible amalgamation of everything wrong with MMOs today.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that at least their heart is in the right place, even if it turns out to be a horrible idea that we point to for the next several years as a shining example of what not to do.

I think at this point its to early to say how well Curt game will do. He has some things going for him but then he has things working against him. The fact that he doesn't seem to be going with a publisher will work towards his advantage, it will keep the game under his control. However he has no experience at making MMO, nor does Todd Mcfarlane and R.A. Salvatore, its one thing to draw comics and write novels and a whole another thing to make video games.

That being said, will just have to wait and see. Mr. Curt can't keep the game a seceret forever if he wish to generat any sort of popularity to the game.

and im pretty sure there is some skilled bad asses behind the scene to working on the game side dont you think ;-)

I expect this game to be old school mmo, ie. get some xp and lvl up type game. It might be well done, but I think the days of those kind of games are over...

Thanks all for supporting me with input, but indeed nothing really new, its a big secret...

He started with EQ and has even played shadowbane. WoW is not his only mmo nor his first.

No but Todd is good at art and Salavtore can write stories....which is what they will do. Im sure they have people with game design experience doing the names. They just have big name people in roles that they do normaly.

Well I hadn't heard of this before so I guess it's a well kept secret in my book. I have to say this is quite exciting for someone who has all the Legend of Drizzt books to date, McFarlane is a top notch artist, finally a game with decent models that's not made in Asia would be refreshing.

Big names don't mean anything pshhya. No they don't unless those big names happen to be extremely talented in the first place and happen to be relevant to what they are trying to create, the only odd name is Curt Shilling but not really as he probably has many resources.

Will certainly keep an eye on this, I'm dying for a fantasy virtual world and not just a pretty landscape where you can loot and loot some more. ;)

Art is fine and good, but writing stories can be problematic.  A game needs a very good setting, but an ideal MMO should have stories that are largely player-driven, imho.  I think a lot of games fail story-wise when much of the story happens without player involvement or when player involvement doesn't matter to the resolution.  I'd love a game where you could actually fail at beating a bad guy and that would have real reprecussions down the road (though equally you might have succeeded -- e.g. the result is dependent on the players, not writer fiat).  A truly awesome MMO would have this philosophy in the gameplay from the very beginning.  That said, I don't expect a game like this any time soon.

Anyhoo, my point was a good writer doesn't necessarily mean anything.  It can be good or bad.  I'd be more impressed if a really good GM from a tabletop RPG was involved (good GMs definitely need to be ok with players doing the unexpected and controlling significant parts of the story).  I certainly didn't see anything in the video that indicated anything exciting for player-driven stories was going to be in it.  I did skip through some of the video though, since the news people seemed to want to spend a lot of time on what an MMO was.
