Lvl. 31 Trickster Game Review

doragon86doragon86 Member UncommonPosts: 589

I'm going to do my best to be unbiased.

Just a little background, I'm a lvl. 31 trickster. My strategy is to generally destroy my enemies from a far, when they attempt to close the gap, quickly build up physique and reopen it.  I chose this character simple because I like rogues, and I like rangers as well, and this had a bit of both. Also keep in mind none of the rogue classes have stealth skill aside from the skinshifter which simply allows you to transform in various npcs such as boars, ousted human mobs, etc. It has no real benefit in pvp. Anyways onward to the review.

Pros about spellborn

You get to look pretty cool from level one, when you first create your character.

First thing that really pulled me into liking the game was the combat. I enjoy the active dodging, targeting, and the skill deck system. In PVP it pretty tough to predict what you're opponent will pull out on you. This is nice because in other games where players are predictably a certain build  of the month you always know what to expect. Also the mobs in the game are not stupid, they actually have a fairly decent AI. For example, humans mobs when they're getting overwhelmed they'll retreat and go ranged and kite you. Also the way they aggro is very similar to EQ1.

The graphics are pretty interesting. It really reminds me of fable, so fable fans will most likely enjoy this aspect of it.

The game has something called a pep system which gives you a continues buff to your damage, attack speed, and movement speed so long as its at lvl 1 or above, which is also quite a nice feature.  Also keep in mind you only lose pep levels when you die. Your pep levels remain with you even when you log as well.

The game is very much skill based. Armor and weapons are simply there for aesthetic value. But there are items called sigils that allow you to add certain few perks to your skills, armor, jewelry, and weapons. They can give you a bit of an upper hand on your opponent, but not too much.

Cons about Spellborn

The first zone has a very slow spawn rate. You're often fighting to quickly tag mobs for various quests, but after the first zone, that spawn rate isn't an issue.

There is very little info on how much your stats affect your skills. There doesn't seem to be a way to tell how a point in one attribute is affecting a particular skill unless you consistently paying attention to your damage values.

You're pretty much forced to read the quests to know what you must do. While this is fine for people who enjoy reading the quests, this may annoy those who simply click accept and want to quickly get crackin on them. Also sometimes the quests are very vague, as in they don't tell you exactly where you must go or what you must do. Also you have to be careful not to miss any quests because some quests unlock the higher level ones, and you might end up having to grind out levels. So I recommend you use the spellborn database at spellborndb.fieses.net and clicking the level progression link and paying attention to what new quests unlock each time you level and grabbing them asap. Also there is no quest tracker so you often have to check your log.

Though the zones after the starting zone have an excellent spawn rate, it's at the same time a bit of a pain because at many times I've just killed 2-3 mobs and I'm sitting down to rest and they're already popping back up on me.

Q&A

What about crafting?

I haven't done much crafting so can't comment on it

What about instances?

I only know of the existence of one instance, and I haven't tried it yet since my guildies aren't high enough level yet.

How stable is the game?

It's fairly stable, only thing that have crashed me was the party bug which they've seemed to resolve.  Aside from the usual bugs its fine.

Would you recommend this game?

Yea, if you have nothing better to play why not? To be honest, not going to be playing this game for too long, since to me its just a game I'm playing until aion is released.

Where can I find more info?

Well you can find the spellborn wiki here and of course you can check out the official NA site here.

Do you love pie?

Yes I enjoy it very much.

And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

This is a decent overview of the game in gerneral, though I would have liked more perspective of the game at L30ish :)

I too was expecting an actually review of the game closer to level 30. What you listed I have already experienced myself at 7.9.

how have you found the trickster to perform pvp wise?

How is the trickster at bunny hopping?  Seriously, TCoS seems to be a really good game -- innovative combat, well written quests, good graphics.  I would suggest anyone interested to get the free trial, and test it out.

Skill plays a huge part in PvP.  Targeting, positioning, and knowing your skill bar imtimately are important.  Unfortunately, so is bunny hopping.  You will be doing this every 1-2 seconds because it is the best way to avoid attacks.  For this reason alone, I will probably not sub.

I hear you. I've heard that the devs are looking into it. I am hoping they limit jumping somehow....ie Stamina Bar or maybe tying it to Physique so if you are at -5 Physique you can barely jump if at all.

Well from what you see in the trial version to lvl 33, I honestly don't see much difference aside from combat being more fast pased since you get skill deck column and row unlocks, encountering different mobs, and getting deeper in the lore. As for tricksters in pvp, it really depends on their skill deck. Generally though with my setup, people who have mainly melee skills in there skill deck will have a hard time against me just because once you get close I quickly build physique and become evasive, and quickly widen the gap with my speed. As I keep my distance, I rain arrows, and gadgets on you occasionally teleporting in to blind you preventing you from using ranged skill, and to gain some more physique. A trickster is just hard to hit if they know what they're doing. For example let's say I'm fighting I dunno a adept or something. Main gadgets I'll be using is Attenuating Snare which reduces physique thus making them slower each tick and Suppresive Squibs which lowers their damage output a bit, though I think it doesn't properly work at times. Anyways if assuming he's already in my face I open up with cartwheel strikes -> backflip kick -> throw a attenuating snare -> go mid range -> snipe -> aim -> headshot -> double trouble. If they haven't managed to close the gap I then do trickshot -> throw suppressing squib -> snipe -> shoot -> aim -> headshot -> razor tip. For heals I open up with cluster bomb with a serrated charge and vary the rest of the combo depending on if the guys in my face or not. If the fellow is smart and is trying to drain my physique I throw down joker, and hope I get lucky and manage to get away from the player. As for bunny hopping, personally I don't do it unless my opponent is doing it. Most people are constantly doing it when pvping. I do hope they limit that as well somehow.

    Really?

I am only 20 and  have seen a huge change in the world and gameplay already... I cant imagine that it dosent change yet more from there to 30.

Anyhoo, like I say, a decent overview. I will be posting my L20 review soon so you can maybe read what I think of it all there :)

With evasive, does it mean that everytime you take an attack, the attacker loses 1 rank of physique or concentration?

    Evasive:

    Increased melee and ranged resistances.

    Melee attackers lose physique.

    Ranged attackers lose concentration.

Hmm, I guess it must be my perspective of things =S. To each their own I guess. I'll try harder next time being more descriptive next time. I look forward reading your review as well. =)

As for evasive, when they use melee skills they lose physique, if they use ranged skills they'll lose concentration.

I find bunny hoppers as easy to kill. Just toss the damage on movement, as an AM i have haunt and I know tricksters have one, because jumping is considered movement it activates damage and they kill themselves.  Since haunt also drops morale and I believe the trickster version drops physique or focus they make themselves gimp and when you do connect with an ability Heroic for morale then they take that much more damage.

I am a Spellcaster and I want to know which one is better at PVP between the Rune Mage and the Ancestral Mage.
