"the server could not find your charecter. please exit and rerun the software."

well it shows my charecter in the login screen, so how could it not be there? i've re-ran the software, and it did the same thing!

They lost your character? That's a nasty bug. Let us know how long it takes to get it restored.

This guy posted that his character was wiped yesterday and hasn't posted since.

Are we looking at the first Everquest 2 fatality? ::::07::

Remember kids: EVERQUEST! It was the game people loved so much, they killed themselves for it! ::::20::

that kid was messed up in the head,  i remember reading that story a few months back.  if you think about it, it can happen to any widley popular game

    Wow.

    That's sick.

I've wondered lots of times, will playing MMORPG's really cause me all those symptons and will people look down on me?

Meh, Im planning on quitting in 6 months with all things computer related anyway.

Yeah, Shawn Wooley was far from the only person to commit suicide over addiction to Everquest, but his was the most publicised death.

HERE'S a very informative article posted on Slashdot in 2002 concerning Sony's approach to keeping people "interested" in their games. Very informative reading indeed.

I'm sure the guy who started this thread is alive and well though, whether or not he's been left grieving over his low-level toon...

how lame. "Shawn was playing 12 hours a day, and he wasn't supposed to because he was epileptic, and the game would cause seizures," she said. "Probably the last eight times he had seizures were because of stints on the computer." Part of her lawsuit is to have a warning label. IT DOES HAVE ONE FOR THIS!

    Here's what really happened:

Mom: Shawn you've been playing EQ for years, 12 hours a day, time to get off.

Shawn: No mom, I've gotta get this new uber item.

Mom: You need to get off that computer and get a job or go to school You are 21 and I am sick of paying for these expenses.

Shawn: What do you mean get a job? I have one. I make 40 platinum a day. Will you take copper for the payment?

Mom: What! You are draining me! I am sick of this. I have lost so much money to your constant playing of EQ!

Shawn: This is my life. It will never change. I will get you your money some time.

Mom: Sooner than you think. SOE is going to give me that money.

Shawn: What do you mean? Wait, what is that?

Mom: *BANG* I'm sorry Shawn. But I can't deal with this anymore. I will just make this look like a suicide and collect on your death.

As Mom walks out the door, she turns around to Shawn and says "You've just been pwned!"

as far as i can tell, that means that the server is down. i have heard people say this before, but the server just cant access your character if its down. it they lost your char though, then that really sucks.

if you ever want to find out for yourself here is the server status page

happened me the other night too. Gave it 10mins, logged in and all was ok. Seems like your character gets lost and takes about 5mins before the server can refresh its position. I remeber DAOC doing this whenever you went LD in the early days, looks to be the same type of thing, dont worry chars are still there so no major bug

You should have known SOE would do something dumb like this.

Go play WoW.. Blizzard is a REAL company.
