So I downloaded the game and tried it out a bit today. Now I'm on the trial so I'm not sure how this compares to the actual game but here are my initial thoughts.
I was surprised by how much I liked the game. When I was making my way to the city I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. They style is pretty nice too, once I turned up the settings. I really really liked the combat and interface.
However
I couldn't find anyone? The few hours I played I came across only and exactly two other players. There was no one around. Also the lack of a tuitoral was kind of an issue. I don't and still don't know how I learn spells and stuff. If you automatically learn them then I would have to say it would be nice to have a few more skills early on, because at level 6 my priest only had two spells really... but like I said this could be my fault or the fault of the trial.
I don't think it conviced me to play subscibe though i might try to play some more tomorrow. But overall I will say it's at least better than I thought it would be.

The first 5 levels you are totally solo while getting to the city, once you reach the city and start on the quests there you will find more people, depending on server yo choosed too, if you choosed the newest servers these will probably feel a bit lonely compared to the servers that got merged.
You learn spells automaticly and each level you are given skill points you can assign in your character sheet. there is a lack of unique skills at low level, but you get new skills about every second level or so, but you don't get a huge amount of them. As you get higher in level you will access more spells and skills
glad to see you like the experience so far, despite what many trolls have tried to say about aoc, it is a quite nice game these days.
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
You gain spells automatically. At level 10 you'll gain a FEAT tab which you pick the line of feats you want and you will learn spells that way as well.
If you are running Tortage Nights part of the destiny quest you will not run into anyone. If you do the day quests you should run into people. I don't know what server you picked but you should find people but I think most people solo Tortage unless you meat them on the way for example to kill the Bat Demon or The Black Ones.
I personally like the game starting at level 10 when you can get the feat tree and decide how you want to build your character. Before that I think they might just want you to get use to the combat.

Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.
Remember that the MMO part doesn't really start until level 20.
The game is instanced, but the level 1-20 part is worst in that regard, as it mostly function as a single player.
It is preferable not to travel with a dead man.
One of the probs AoC is going to continue to have is the sharp contrast in the difference in the game between the first 20 levels and the rest of the game.
A lot of free trial players are going to not get much past Tortage, be impressed and subscribe. A month or two later they'll quit pissed. I know there has been a lot of change but regardless the beginning of the game is a whole different thing than the rest. Its not a question of the game sucking or not, its more a question of the difference. A lot of people will be put off after being given a 7 day free trial that effectively limits them to the most polished part of the game that is also provides a much different gaming experience than the rest of the game.
I actually prefer the game after level 20. I hated Tortage. So you will get some people like me in the game to. So if your on the trial and do not care for Tortage. Just push forward into the 20s and see if you like it then. Do as many quests as you can and you will level up extreemly quickly.
It's like a child birth. Tortage is like being in the womb, everything is peaceful. Then comes the labor stage and it's a painful stage for both mom and child which happens when you leave tortage and come to the raw reality of the world. Finally when you start growing, you come to enjoy life and all aspects of it which is like when you're leveling up and experiencing pvp and pve content.
I am DLing it right now. I don't expect to like the game much as it is very restrictive and NON-sandbox:( However, this is all reviews from other people. I like to find things out for myself and make my own decision on MMOs. I am glad that they are doing this trial because I've been curious of AoC, but wouldn't buy it to try it out due to the general setup of the game. I am not a fan of levels and quests, but at this point there is nothing for me on the market and therefore it is worth a try.
Personally, if i disliked levels and quests, i'd go out and do stuff IRL instead of playing a level and quest based game
Uh, I guess this is what mainly put people off, in the first months of launch. The game has changed since then though, and is much more fun *after* Tortage imo.
It doesn't lack any polish either.

Wow I never thought I'd see anyone on these boards compare an MMO to child birth, I guess I've seen it all now. Fucked up on so many levels.

I was trying to be funny.
I guess I gotta start using /joke before or after i type things like this or else some people might take it seriously

I just burned one of my buddy keys 3 weeks ago checking it out. While there have been additions, the game did not seem fundamentally different than when I'd played before, especially from the context of starting at level 1. Perhaps had I an opportunity to play my old high level char I may have seen more differences.
Nonetheless, whether or not its polished, AoC still has a problem in that the 7 day taste from level 1 is going to be markedly different than the rest of the game.
The trial is largely meaningless... More then any game AoC is a bait and switch. The first 20 levels are a 10 in my opinion. As you level up past 20 the game quality and fun factor starts to decline. In the 50s or so I was pretty fed up with the game. But they have improved stuff and maybe it is better now. I played at release. It was funny watching my reviews of the game at release. At lvl 20 I thougth it was the best game ever. At level 60 I thought the game sucked worse then any game I can recall....

I too was a little surprised by the lack of players. In fact, just about the only player interaction I had experienced all night was getting ganked by a lvl 30 in White Sands. On the "RP-PVP" server no less. Not a good sign.
But as far as basic gameplay mechanics go I'm having a lot of fun.
