LoL i have always wondered why the term "Healer" was so taboo to some small but very vocal minority of players...
after reading a bunch of there are NO Healers in CoX threads i am still wondering ....
Healer for me = anyone who can heal more than 1 person at a time and is slotted well enough to do so effectively
based on my personal definition YES there are healers in CoX. I often fight AV's and run TF's as a Tank yeah healers are very often needed and appreciated. Frankly I don't much care if a healer just heals or buff's/debuffs/blasts and heals. Although when fighting AV's a few good buff's / debuffs go a long way. Often even if I DON'T need heals many of the group DO need heals (yes many AV's have AOE's ). On occasion a teams have died and come back while i was still fighting AV's in some instances when we had NO heals.
The only thing i can think of is that some people think they personally are being Pigeon-holed into a stereotype which is just silly. The way i see it if Healer doesn't apply to your character then don't worry about it. You know some people LIKE to have Healing / Debuff / Buff ONLY characters, good for them nobody should tell them they can't play that way.
BTW if you are ever on Freedom my main is Super Hewer he is lvl 50. I will be more than happy to invite you onto any team or give you the name of any of my alts near your level. Heck i can even give you some decent SG's to join or some inf if you are in need.
Players that either solo or run small teams don't always need a healer. However, I'd never start a strike/task force if we had no healer. A single target heal is not in my personal definition of a "healer" either. :P
Pain Domination is the new villain empathy and I do enjoy it with my MM. Now I'm not "just" a dps slot but can fill a healer roll as well.
Its more a matter of fighting a mindset more then it is fighting a term. So many people call themselves a healer and then take only the powers from thier primary and the medicine pool. Not too mention the effectiveness of the rest of the defenders primary compared to the heal. They then use way to many slots to enhance those heals and neglect the powers that help keep the team from taking damage. Yes if you are taking damage and are getting in the red a quick heal is nice. Even nicer is having your teammates buffed and the enemies debuffed enough that you don't take damage.

-- To each their own ... If i am tanking (see the term tauntbot tank) it doesn't matter to me if they have heavy heals or light heals + good damage. I tend to taunt heavily to try and keep mobs of my team as well as hold aggro on bosses, EB's and AV's. Outside of a few strays or some missplaced / ill-advised knockbacks I can usually deal with ANY healing/debuffing/buffing setup a player has. Its often nice to have multiple powers for healing that blaster who got too close or even the scrapper who hasn't quite got their powers the way they want them yet.
And i don't even mind the occasional over zealous blapper that needs to be healed every 3 secs with a direct heal..... :-D
That kind of player helps healers get their badges a bit faster than most... and sometimes contributes to team wipes (take the good with the bad). Gotta love blappers they make things interesting and keep my taunting skills from getting rusty
-- Back on topic if the OP wants to make a straight team healer, debuffer, buffer or any combination of the three. I think as long as you enjoy that character keep playing it, and most people will still invite you( I am one of them :P) despite what some have stated and suggested.

--- I think some posters have forgotten that... Besides if the team doesn't work for you get a team more to your liking.
- To those that say well if a person like that is on my team i cant get to LVL 50 in 2 weeks ( I need MAX XP and MIN down time)
you are correct you probably wont get lvl 50 that fast with them i would suggest you find a team more suited to your needs or maybe even a more hardcore SG/VG that may be more of a fit there are some out there. (Some that have all day farms as well)
- I would also suggest that to the healer/buffer/debuffer in question there are a number of laid back SG/VG's as well and add people to your friends lists that you like to play with and give them a yell... CoX can be and is often a very social game too.
*CoX = City of Heroes and City of Villains combined - also seen as CoH/V or even City of...

I play a healer in cox, if people dont like me saying Im a healer while lft, then thats their tough luck and I won't be helping them. I am rarely short of a team and often teams enjoy having me around and usually seek tougher settings or missions.
I've been back to the game after a long time away, and I'm really surprised by the number of peple here and on the official forums who talk like CoX is a game in which groups don't need healers (which it is) and that the general playerbase understands this (they do not). I stopped playing my Defender at level 35 because I got sick of explaining to people how the Kenetics set works and why it wasn't my fault if someone ran off and got themselves killed. This was a character that, before ED, could have puple bosses down to zero endurance in two moves and keep them that way indefinitely; yet all I ever got was "heal plz."
So for whatever reason that was the first character I logged back in on after resubscribing. When the screen finished loading, there was already a tell from someone asking, "r u healer." Before I was done typing my response ("I haven't logged in since 2005, I don't remember if I'm a healer or not") there was another tell from someone else asking the same question, but with better grammar. I quickly went into hide mode.
I completed the respec trial this weekend with a leader who wouldn't start without a healer. We had no tank, and I was the only scrapper, so it's safe to say that I took more damage than anyone else. Did the healer have to heal me? Not once. In fact, I think the only thing he healed the entire trial was the reactor core. Admittedly that was a mighty fine PUG, but still.
I see "healer" in people's search comments all the time. I got two tells on my controller this evening asking if I was a healer, despite the fact that I was already on a team. The OP, if he hasn't already wandered off to another game, will find plenty of groups that will be happy to have him even if he doesn't slot a single enhancement in his offensive powers.

Yep I have done the same because I heal, I debuff and I buff. All 3 provide a good rounded experience. Generally what you described above is what my rad/thermal can do, oh but I heal also. If I dont have to top health up I go nutso with Melt Armor and Radiation debuffs.
Not one person ever in this game has complained to me regarding /healer lft. If I live in a tiny green box, what a comfy place it is at least I am not part of this games old world order from long ago that is anti-healer. On the flip side you won't see me whining about people just saying buffer lft whatever floats someones boat I hope they enjoy the game. In reality though most groups used to love having an empath defender along. Were they a necessity? Possibly not but it sure as hell made missions far smoother.
If you are upset at the "healing thing" then you must be really against the devs who recently introduced /pain domination to villains which is a second heal heavy set and is a mirror for empathy. So if this game is pro buffs and debuffs only, then the game designers homes must all be decorated green!
I know how the game works by stating tougher I meant relentless arch villains but visitors to this forum may not necessarily understand cox geek speak. I will continue to say /healer lft even though I made 50 in a short time and will be on my VEAT alts for a while. Feel free to ignore anyone saying "healer lft" one of the many you see doing it maybe me.

*sigh* I feel your pain. Even putting "rad/rad - not a healer" in my search comments doesn't completely stop the "r u healer?" tells.
I've tried a couple dedicated healers and discovered they're just not for me. I find them too limiting for solo-play. Too many powers that can't be used on self. The Pain Mgmt powerset is nice for MMs, though, since even when soloing, you're still on a "team."

a number of my irl friends laughed when the devs introduced pain domination... because a lot of the heals you do, actually seem to buff YOU, while they're healing others... my friends were all like... "ahh now you make a he3lz0rz!". yeah, they thought it was funny until they realized you get a self buff from the PD rez... so now they die a lot more so i can get THAT buff.
but some of this healing stuff is just retarded. i'm playing a bots/dark on a team of 4, going against mynx. the corr and a brute are steady fighting mynx, while a second brute and i are taking out the dozen or so minions/lts/bosses that are with her... we wipe, when it's down to a minion and mynx.
the brute that was fighting mynx complains that because i don't have howling twilight (dark miasma's rez, that does stun) that there's no way we can get enough -regen on mynx to beat her.
twilight grasp (pbaoe heal, -regen, -acc i believe) wasn't being used on mynx, BECAUSE we were taking out all her cohorts.
we go back in, and take mynx out in like 5 minutes. the one whiny brute makes a comment that his using inspirations was what made the difference.... not the fact that all 4 of us were now fighting mynx cuz we'd gotten rid of her minions... not that mynx had darkest night on her, was in 1-2 tar patches constantly, had twilight grasp spammed on her (which also kept everyone healed nicely)... no, it was because that brute used his inspirations in a 5 minute fight vs. mynx.
you can't fix stupid. you honestly can't.
i don't know how many teams i'm on, where it'll be two darks on the team, damn near spamming twilight grasp, and you'll still have people whining that no one ever heals. or "oh i hate MMs", and just whine about the MMs all the time. god forbid it's some noob that was pl'd to 50 and is on a veat... most of the time those geniuses don't even bother with something basic like the veat leadership powers (and this is when they're around level 30-40).
i've got an earth/ta... you really don't get much more support than that... the ONLY things earth/ta don't do would be 1-heal, and 2-do any REAL damage... but as far as holding down and debuffing every mob in sight --- earth/ta are your sets! i've joined teams with people that are still in the wow mindset, and after a couple of missions, they're asking about how hard it was to level earth/ta cuz of how awesome it is!
all i DO know, is that it's aggravating when you're on a team that has people constantly healing and you still have idiots whining that no one is healing. it's just as aggravating when you're on a team that's taking NO DAMAGE... no one is ever even in yellow, much less red (for health), and you have people whining that there's not a healer.
honest to god -- you can't fix stupid.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
I have to admit i didnt read all the previous posts because it looked like a debate on are healers useful. But to get to the OPs question. A fine support character is the Earth/storm controller.
Soloing, forget it until you get your pet. Even then its slow but you can take on some tough stuff.
Earth has the best "hard" cc that i have played. stuns, roots, snare, KD etc. A lot of the powers also come with a built in debuff that at times can overlap with the Storm side so watch your slotting. You can "blind" pull mobs, thus preventing or softening the alpha. Overall earth trollers have tons of control tools and great debuffs but you hit like a wet noodle.
Storm is your real support set. Lots of powerful debuffs in this set, snowstorm and freezing rain being two of my favorites.
I wont get into a lot of tactics or power specifics since i feel you should mess around with different builds until you find your fit, but i will say that this is one of the power sets that is closest to 100% support.
One other thing i have found with this character is its one of the most tactical characters i've ever played in any game, with a little clever use of KB and quicksand/volcanic gases you can push multiple groups together, lock em down, and debuff em all at the same time, then you are free to sit back and dream for the 100th time of how awesome it would be to have a blaster in the group that could hit them with RoF. Im not even going to get into the chaos we can create with tornado at this time, you can find that in the advanced appendix under the "How to really piss off your tank and have a good laugh at the same time." section.
Im not saying this set is the best or anything, radiation is also great, and like a poster above said earth/TA can be very powerful, but its my favorite.
i think earth/storm would be pretty interesting. i'll have to get my earth/ta to 50 first though.

all i DO know, is that it's aggravating when you're on a team that has people constantly healing and you still have idiots whining that no one is healing. it's just as aggravating when you're on a team that's taking NO DAMAGE... no one is ever even in yellow, much less red (for health), and you have people whining that there's not a healer.
honest to god -- you can't fix stupid.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Cheers
i think earth/storm would be pretty interesting. i'll have to get my earth/ta to 50 first though.
