I've never played the game before, and I missed every opportunity to do so. The game hasn't really interested me all that much but since the release is near, I figured I might as well ask one last time before I decide to get it or not.
What's there to do in the game besides kill stuff? And I'm not talking about other stuff like questing or blacksmithing, because usually questing involves killing more stuff, and blacksmithing involves killing stuff for who knows how many hours to craft something that takes 2 seconds.
I've played a ton of Korean MMORPGs and it surprises me on how boring American ones seem in comparison, in Korean MMORPGs you can do a host of things, like play musical instruments, fishing (that doesn't involve throwing line in and waiting), making clothes with interesting designs, drawing and designing art designs, etc...
I was wondering if WoW had anything besides just the typical MMORPG stuff. Just to let you know, I hated Everquest 2, I got into the closed beta and stopped playing after 2 days. The only thing that was even mildly appealing about that game was the voiceovers for all the quests. Beyond that, it's nothing more than hackhackhack level up hackhackhack. Not much funner than Lineage 2 was. The only MMORPG I've played for a while was EVE Online, and even that got mind-numbing boring, it was fun at first when everything was new but after that, I found myself simply flying from system to system trying to get one item or the other, often spending an hour or more just to get an item to outfit my ship. Things that I did like about the game was that it wasn't just simply 'oh look i'm level 4 let's go buy all the level 4 equipment that everyone else has'. You really had to consider what to outfit your ship with and consider ranges, weapon types, etc... instead of just mindless equipping and going out and killing more stuff.

Well there really isn't much to do except craft, explore, kill stuff(mobs and other players), and questing(which usually involves killing stuff, or fed-ex). But I'd probably say that about every MMORPG I ever played.
If you want to talk about little things like fishing, then maybe someone else who has more experience with the game can help you out.. I've only noticed a few like getting drunk and it having an actual affect on your character, and a few other things that I can't think of right now.

I honestly don't know what to say about a post like this other than to say maybe MMORPGs aren't for you. There is questing and other stuff. That is pretty much mutually exclusive. There is other "stuff" other than killing when it comes to skills. There is herbalism where you have to hunt for plants to increase your skill. Fishing involves a timer, but it is a short one. If you like playing musical instruments, perhaps AC2 would be a better choice. There is dancing in WoW.
Blizzard never intended to make state-of-the-art breakthroughs. They just wanted to develop and perfect the ideas already incorporated into other MMORPGs. Good Luck on the search for an MMORPG that you will enjoy. But after reading your post, I don't believe you will find one.
The game world is big and there's a lot of exploring to do. Also the quests are not as fedex as other MMORPGs I've played. There are a lot of easter eggs to discover and you'll find yourself surprised and amused at the conclusion of many of the quests, just not the ones in the newbie areas. WoW is also very easy to get into... although some of the chat commands will take a bit of getting accustomed to.
One mistake jimothypetro made in his post is putting the pvp in with the pve. The player versus player raids and battles are what really sets this game apart from eq2. It's good fun to launch an attack against an enemy town... And excellent fun to see those gnomes fall by the dozens to my rain of fire spell.
In terms of customising WoW features an entertaining array of items to wear and equip... But getting to wear these unique-looking items will have you questing and leveling for quite some time. Also you may wear a guild tabard that you can design from quite a nice variety of symbols (many of these were posted by blizzard fans as part of a blizzard event). WoW will receive love from the developers and different world events are bound to take place (otherwise blizzard will have truly broken some promises, something that they have not done before).
If you are looking to do other things besides beat $hit down, quest, pvp, raid then most likely mmorpgs are not for you. If you are looking to do things like play musical instraments, paint pictures, deep sea diving, bake cakes etc, then try getting a life. Because all of those things are better to do in REAL LIFE.
I don't play a game and say to myself "ok lets play a tottally fictionall fantasy game and see what things I can fake doing in-game instead of doing it better in real life". I play a game and say to myself " What can I do that gets me away from things I do in real life."

I tried AC2, I didn't really like it. In the 5 hours that I played the game, I only ran across 1 person who ignored me when I tried to ask him where everyone else was, and people in the chat rooms ignored me too.
As for MMORPGs, I'm starting to believe that they're not for me too. I really only play them for the social interaction (hence why I don't play Korean ones anymore, I don't speak the language) and for the persistent world where your character can advance as you play more. I used to play a ton of FPS's but eventually I got bored of the senseless round after round of aim, shoot, and die.
I think in the end I'll give WoW a try anyway, what I really can't stand is downtime, EVE had WAY too much of it and FFXI was too party-based for my liking, especially since every party I've been in was crappy (Bastok residents are all idiots it seems). Anarchy Online, I couldn't stand how you could barely kill a leet before dying in the supposedly newbie zone, and the interface felt clunky and unpolished. Ragnarok Online, I actually played this game for a while until I realized I'm just running around from dungeon to dungeon doing the exact same thing, with nary a quest in sight and Engrish up the butt. DAOC, I tried for 5 minutes and quit, it was just not for me. Horizons was ok, but ultimately not worth the monthly fee to me. Lineage 2 was a level grind that got boring when I hit level 12. Neocron ended up being Everquest in a Sci-fi setting for me, and killing cockroaches all day didn't appeal to me. Star Wars Galaxies was ok, but once again ultimately not worth the monthly fee, and I heard you can just solo your way through the entire game. And I'm currently downloading Ryzom right now, I tried it when it first went open beta but it was so buggy I quit after wrestling with it for 20 minutes.
The only MMORPGs I've actually devoted any time to at all is Ragnarok Online and EVE Online, both of which got boring after about a month or so. I don't mind killing monsters and stuff, especially if I can find a good group to do it in, I just can't stand downtime, whether it be travelling from place to place or sitting down to recover HP. And it's not that I'm impatient or anything, I do enough sitting around and waiting in real life, why should I pay $15 a month to sit down in a game and wait some more?
WoW, you sound quite finicky. I'd suggest you visit the offial site and look around to see if there's anything there for you. If not, then feel free to move along.
As an example of something that you may not know, since you mentioned blacksmiths, I'd suggest you read a little about Blacksmithing and some of the other professions available. Although, to be quite honest, WoW doesn't feel like a game where you won't be doing combat and the choices available for classes supports that theory, so you may wish to jump down to the next game on the list.
In case the links don't come out, here they are again:

Screenshots and videos are necessary for first impressions, but what you can't see in them are the things that matter the most.
so...
while I can consider, in mmorpg nothing much you can do every thing seem to be the same, of course doing something special or lame can be in the terms of jumping from high hills doing some crazy stuns, , mainly WoW is story, and the quest that is, if you read you understand that everything is link together, so just read and killing people PVP and the battleground will be fun. so just have to wait till retail and see

I think you will really like world of warcraft, i played final fantasy and it was just like you said.....you had to have a group to make any real progress in the game, and at higher lvls it could take up to a hour to find a party. Also the downtime isnt any thing compared to any mmorpg ive ever played either, i made 2 characters in the open beta a 23 warrior and a 18 warlock and both of those characters had very little to no downtime. The thing that really made me decide to get wOw is because you dont need a party to lvl fast unless you want to do instances, which are fun. There is hardly any down time, You lvl up fairly fast...or atleast it seems like it since your always questing and not just killing random mobs for xp. Getting around the world doesnt take to long like it did in final fantasy, you can take zepplines and....i forgot the name of them but there like air mounts that fly you to your destination. The best thing thow i think is townraids...we went on one on pvp server 9 and had a group of like 100+ horde ranging from lvl 10-40 raid a night elf town it was awsome...probably the most fun i have ever had playing a mmorpg.
sorry if my spelling or any thing is wrong i have a wickid bad hang over right now..
You should try The Sims Online, or barbies bake a cake game.
Or buy a doll and dress her up
Ok those last 2 were jokes, but maybe the Sims is actually more your style.
Eh, I've never played The Sims (or The Sims Online) and I don't really have an interest in the game. If I want a virtual life, I'll go outside and get some fresh air.
On the other hand, I tried A Tale in the Desert, I liked the game a lot for its innovative building system but eventually the cost of materials got way too high, I spent too much time gathering wood like crazy and even more time cutting it and prepping it, and coupled with no music and hardly anybody around to help you out, I eventually lost interest and quit.
I also tried Second Life, and although it was interesting at first, the clunky interface system and the lack of things to do really got to me. I know, I know, there's tons of things to do in Second Life, but none of them are very well-implemented. Everything just felt like fighting with lag, and the only games that seemed to be popular was gambling (not interested) and going to clubs and dancing (I'd rather just steam some Shoutcast stuff). I had no interest in building stuff or buying other crafted stuff in the game, since there was really nothing to do with it except show it off and go "look I made this!". But to each his own, I just didn't like Second Life.
I guess my tastes ARE pretty particular, I was one of those guys who didn't like Halo because it was just more of the same with a junk storyline (I got more out of the story reading the manual than playing the game) and the only thing good about it was the enemy AI. I also just beat Half-Life 2 recently and I didn't like it too much either. The storyline was interesting but the ending, although mildly interesting, just plain sucked. Imagine going at 100 miles per hour, and then WOPAK! you hit a brick wall. Same thing with HL2's ending. Also, the game started off VERY interesting, like a game version of the book 1984 come alive, but then eventually turned into "Hey I'm Rambo let's blow **** up". I read some reviews that 'praised' the enemy AI, if you consider opponents that hide behind a wall and then pop out exactly 4 seconds later to take some pot shots and pops back in, and repeats this cycle indefinitely, yeah, it's advanced. No more advanced than the original Medal of Honor. In only 2 situations did the enemy actually flank me, but that was because it was the shorter path towards me rather than a real "let's get behind this guy and blast him!". Personally I'm itching for some AI like that in Metal Gear Solid 2, where they actually do actual squad-based tactics rather than just a stream of enemies rushing towards you. In the end, HL2 was a decent game, but nowhere near the immersive factor of Call of Duty or the fun level of Serious Sam.
In the end I'll be trying out WoW anyway, it's not like I hate MMORPGs and leveling up and killing monsters, I just don't want to be doing it 100% of my time because there's nothing else to do. At least have some optional content in there.
You want a good FPS to play where the AI is very challenging. I would suggest "Far Cry". You have missions to run, but how you accomplish them can be very different. You can use different strategies to run the same mission. For example, you can play stealth mode and try not to be seen, or you can play rambo style. The AI is very good and will outflank you. Not a random spawn behind you in the area you just went through. If you shoot at someone, that will draw attention to others in the area. This game you have to think or you will get wasted. The graphics are state-of-the-art and will tax even the best video-cards. The only drawback is the way the game is saved. You can't save the game manually. You have to walk through an invisible barrier and the game will notify you it is being saved. I have played HL-2 (although not the whole way through), and I think Far Cry is a better FPS.
The demo is very good and gives a good indication on how the game is played. If you want to try it, you can download the demo here.

After reading some of your posts, it seems that you're bored of gaming in general. I can respect your opinion, but I completely disagree with you about Halo. I hated first person shooters before Halo. I originally got my X-Box to play Madden. Halo had a lot of hype and buzz, so I figured I'll buy it and see what it's all about. As soon as I started playing, I felt as though I was part of a movie. I find it strange that you thought it had a bad story. I really enjoyed it.
With all the things that you listed that you don't like, I really can't make a suggestion other than Horizon's. I don't play it anymore, but I did enjoy the crafting system out of all the other games I've played.
Other than that, maybe you would like City of Heroes, but it will get repetitive eventually.
LOL I was thinking SIMS sounds more what he is looking for too hehe .......... the other thing you may want to look at are getting into the XboX online type things if the online computer games such as MMO"s arent what you are looking for. I don't think what you are looking for is going to be around for a long time yet due to some technical issues with online gaming, such as bandwith. WoW is not much different than most MMO's out there except for the most part they took out the tedious aspects out of the game for the most part and added alot of back drop the quest lines. In reality the end game is PvP not matter if you play the PvP server or the normal server, its what the whole warcraft series is based off of, factional warfare, so if your not a fan of at least a minimal amount of PvP you will find WoW is like most of the others you tried up to that point.
I played Far Cry, it was a fun game, up until the point where I blew up the reactor and the girl joined me and we were supposed to go storm some place, and then I just said "Forget it this is too tedious" and quit playing. But it was a fun game nonetheless.
I'm still sticking to at least giving WoW a try, I may seem very picky when it comes to games but there's several titles that I do enjoy. I just normally have a gripe with paying $50 for a game I'll play for, 10-20 hours and then never touch again. And for games that don't bring any enjoyment factor or turns into a dungeon crawler, or a wait 10 minutes play 1 minute, or becomes nothing more than run from point A to point B with no purpose except some loosely thrown-in storyline.
Regarding Halo, it WAS fun when I first started playing it and I thought it was pretty awesome too, but storyline is a big factor in the games that I play (hence why I played Baldur's Gate 2 even though I hated the combat system and the graphics) and Halo just didn't have it. I seriously beat the entire game in co-op with my friend, and I got nothing out of it, then I read the manual and was like "Oh, so THAT's what the covenant is, so THAT's what Halo is, so THAT's why those lesser enemies follow the elites, so THAT's what the master chief is, etc...".
P.S. I also didn't like GTA: San Andreas because it's just more of the same, and I had my fill of it in GTA3. I guess I AM picky :P.

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
I tried Everquest 2 and didn't like it at all. To me it was just another level grind with boring skills, no storyline, boring quests (go out, kill stuff, return back and deliver stuff), and tedious grinding.
There's quite a bit of stuff to do in Korean MMORPGs. Take for example, Talesweaver, even though the game is pretty much a level grind throughout the entire game, it had some EXCELLENT music that I still listen to, really cute anime character design, and you can throw items on the ground to make 'item art'. It was quite popular and some of the designs are amazing (Pikachu, Hello Kitty, a giant rose, etc...). It's just something to do on the side instead of killing monsters all day. There's another Korean MMORPG called Mabinogi where you can actually buy a guitar, make a tune, and play it in the middle of the city and everyone can hear. You can also make your own custom clothing, and it's not simply just crafting, but actually designing your own custom clothing to wear. And in Talesweaver and Seal Online, the combat had a combo system that you can utilize to deal more damage to the enemy, something I haven't seen in any American MMORPG. I know another one had horse racing in it, but I can't remember the name of the game, and another one had an interesting fishing mini-game built in. And Trickster Online had an interesting drilling system, where you would buy a drill and you can drill into the ground to find rare items. Kinda reminds me of Anarchy Online's drilling system...
As for Guild Wars, I tried it and didn't like it. When I played it during those open weekend betas, the groups I've been in all acted like the game was Diablo, rushing ahead and just killing guys without even caring about the rest of the party. Plus, even though your character stats and everything are saved, the game is still instanced and every combat zone is an instanced too. I want a game where I can be walking by, going to the next town, and I see someone in need of help, like if they're getting mobbed by tough enemies, and I can go and help save them. Or witness a war going on, or some nice PvP, or something, not just an instanced zone.
I know that the main focus of MMORPGs is to kill stuff and level up, I don't mind the level grind, IF I can say, stop level grinding for a while and go do something else for a change that doesn't involve me killing monsters endlessly. EVE Online provided some of that distraction, but mining got boring fast and agent missions were for the most part, boring. I also would like a game where strategy and tactical maneuvers can come into play, such as flanking an opponent, or being able take several specializations and combine them together. For example, in EVE, you can have one guy that flew a ship that fired missiles from afar, one guy to get up close and deal tons of damage, and one guy to target jam and warp jam the enemy so he couldn't fly away or target you. However, situations like that in EVE were very rare, and it was hard to get someone to want to leave their 'area' and come assist you because it took so long to warp around. But in other MMORPGs, it usually ends up being a group of people who party together, but the only difference it makes is that you'd kill enemies faster, no specialization involved and hardly any teamwork or strategy involved besides the occasional healing. It would be nice, if say, I casted Ice 1 and then someone followed up with Fireball 1 to do extra damage, kinda like the combo's in Chrono Trigger.
P.S. I watched some really cool videos downloadable from the EVE Online site and was tempted to play it again, but I decided to wait until WoW comes out.
P.P.S. It might seem like I don't like this game and that game and seemingly any sort of game that comes out, but what it really is is that I'm not willing to pay money and time for them. I find most of the games that were mentioned to be fun, like Guild Wars, Far Cry, Halo, etc... but ultimately I don't see myself playing these games after 3-4 months. Even EVE Online barely lasted for a month for me, and the 2nd month I played only 3 days out of 30. That's because I lose interest in monotonous and repetitive tasks fast, and if there's not enough content to keep me motivated to keep on going, I quit. I already have enough monotony and boredom in my life, I don't need it in video games. I'm really hoping that the quest storylines and the fast-paced low downtimes nature of WoW will keep me hooked for a while.
Yes, you guys are right most MMOs do tend to get repetitive and boring. Most games I play for a week or 2 but then get bored with and never touch again (well at least not for a few months). WoW has managed to hold my attention since I first played during the ST and for the last phase of beta that started in Sept or so. So its has so far lasted for 2-3 months and i still want more, despit the fact that I have to relevel a whole new character. WoW is fairly fast paced without any real "downtime", I neer had to grind. Granted it could be argued that its a "quest grind" but somehw that makes it much more fun. The only other MMO game that held my attention this long was maybe 10six during its open beta and a month or 2 into retail. Most people never heard of that game but it was great, too bad it had so many annoying bugs. I played EVE online for a month or two as well, but it got boring, too much empty space......
