Has anyone ever suspected Cryptic of messing with the servers at certain times?
There are some days/nights when my toons just kick amazing butt.
Then there are other times where they appear to be hopelessly outclassed and couldn't kill a level one. I know, I know, team-strategy-tactics-numbers-DO's-SO's-etc-etc.
Last night was one of those "you will be humbled" nights. Even with strong teams, we just got overwhelmed. It was those cave missions in The Hollows (given by the Troll).
First off, the cave creatures (Proteans?) now have speed enhancement, so they zip right up to you or past you, depending on who is drawing aggro. It was my mission, so I went through 3 teams before the 3rd one made. Several people I picked up reported the caves were especially hard.
Also got my arse handed to me with another toon in Perez Park earlier in the night.
Could be my imagination. When you do well, you think, my toon is righteously invincible. But when you get smoked, and debt is rising, you start to wonder, where exactly did I go wrong with this guy/gal?
Sometimes after a particularly brutal mission, I will go out and kill creatures 4 levels below me, just to get my confidence back. Like yes, you can be a force. Just concentrate.
Of course, I suspect conspiracy, that they would make it tougher sometimes to keep things on a level/even keel.

It could be the random number problem. Its a known fact that computers are hopeless at creating truly random numbers, instead you tend to see a pattern with them, so I imagine thats what you're seeing here. The random number generator for the mobs has hit an up-spike and the difficulty is increased for a short time.
I actually used this to my advantage in the past. I used to play a MUSH called Shadowrun Seattle, and in combat you had to +roll dice for attacks, damage and everything else. Well, you could also +roll to yourself, so nobody else could see the numbers. What I'd do is +roll to myself about ten times, get the feel of where the random numbers were falling, then do the +roll for combat when I was content that a high roll would come up. It actually worked at least 8 times out of 10.
I wonder if they could make a chip to create true random numbers.. probably no need for it though.
I have noticed this, where my toon can usually fight two bad guys of here level without using her buff (she's a MA scrapper), but sometimes I need my buff my heal and a healing insp just to take one down.
As far as the PC and random numbers, most programs use the internal clock of the pc down to the milisecond. So while not totally random, it does all right. As with anything "random" though there will be trends. I mean there have been cases in Las Vegas where the Roulette Wheel hit 12 blacks in a row. In 12 spins you should expect to see 6 black and 6 red. At the end of the day though, if you counted the number of reds and the number of blacks it would come out pretty much even (this isn't entirely accurate becasue the green 0 and 00 are in there two so it's not quite a 50/50 thing but you get the idea).
You know, I've felt that way at times. One day I'm super uber, next day I can't hit anything. My SG mates have also felt that way. I can't explain it. But yes, I've been there.
Good explanation there, Jodokai.
I have seen this as well, and not sure what it can be. Only thing I can actually say is true here is that certain power sets are better against certain mobs, and certain mobs may have better resistances to your particular powers than others.
But using a random number generator, as you have all said, can produce "streaks" of unfortunate rolls.
