Depends a lot on which server you are on, I guess. I am on Vox and it is pretty empty - very difficult to group with anyone and I basically ask guildies if they want to group (I am a 59 wizard).
Go to AB server, its not like being on a heavy server on WoW but its close enough.

That's where I created most of my characters, and I went there because of the heavy population. On the other hand, it does get laggy at times. So I am considering shifting to maybe Lucan D'Lere. Could anyone estimate the typical zone populations n the most-populated medium servers? Numbers are hard to come by, but simply saying "50% of AB" or whatever would do fine.

Don't go to AB. Whole guilds often pay $50 USD per toon to transfer off of there as it's insanely laggy in certain areas at endgame. It's fine there until you want to do the popular stuff, which grim will find out in time. Also, grim is on UK time, so when he plays, most of the server is still at work/school.

If your goal is to raid, then Guk or Mistmoore (both approx 70% AB).
If you're after a good general community, then Mistmoore, Najena (40% AB), or Blackburrow (60% AB) would do the trick nicely.
For EU servers, Splitpaw has the higher population (60% AB), though I find Runnyeye (50% AB) to have the nicer community.
In case you're unaware (most are), character slots do not carry over into different regions. For example, on a 12 slot Station account, I have 12 toons on Runnyeye, 12 toons on Test, and 12 toons on Antonia Bayle. Pretty groovy, eh?

Unfortunately subscription numbers are now being closely guarded by the companies. I believe EQ2 still has a few servers which are well populated.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)

On the european side of the pond both servers seem like they're decently populated.
