aging graphics

Hey, how well do you guys think the graphics of FFXI have aged in comparison to other games that are out right now?

 

better or worse? or doing good for the time they've been around?

 

I still think they look better than most mmos, certainly better than WoW IMO. While I don't think they can hold up technically to new games.. I think the world and art style is hard to beat.

    SE should follow EVE and release a graphics update and reskin the game. I dont think the game would take much effort to make it look comprable to some of todays mmos. I have played since launch and hope they breath some new life into one of the most unique games out there.

    you have to do the registry hack and it looks amazing looks better than alot of the MMOs that got released recently. I run at 1080p with the background 3d res set to 2056x2056 doubling the 1028x1028 max. enable MIP mapping also. everytime i look at ffxi with this detail i go... "take that you new mmo, ffxi was released 7 yrs ago and it can still kick your ass"

    While it would be great if Square did that, it'll never happen. Since FFXI is on the Playstation 2, the graphics won't ever get improved. I remember it being mentioned somewhere in an interview that it's because of the Playstation 2 that there aren't very many customization options during character creation either.

    Still though, compare Morrowind and Final Fantasy XI to each other. Both games came out at the same time, but FFXI looks worlds better.

    Considering SE had a much higher budget to develop the game over what Bethesda had, indeed it would look better. The EVE option to download the premium visual package has always impressed me and hope other programmers would consider it as an option. When applied to this instance the PS2 would run off the classic content while the 360 and PC players would have the option of the premium graphics. SE is working on their new MMO which Iam sure they are diverting their efforts too. I have closed my account a few months back for good as most zones are like ghost towns. Iam sure SE would be smart to support but not put much effort and money into any drastic improvements.

     

    Sony didn’t help either with the lack of really any support on the HDD. The lack of an HDD slot to the newer PS2 didn’t make it any easier. I would assume the majority of FFXI player would have changed over to another platform by now. By choice or lack of hardware and budget availability.

     

    Hopes and dreams and that’s all I can do for FFXI

    They can't do that. Taking one system and making it superior to another would alienate the group you didn't improve and create imbalance. The one thing SE does right is giving hte same expereince to everyone.

    Also those Ghost towns: they are either alive and well again since they introduced level sync and feilds of valor or they were always ghost towns (I mean ... who hangs out in the Outer Horutoto Ruins? ... honestly)

    I got 4 jobs at 75's....I am not grinding xp anymore. Just the sight of a crab or a fish makes me cringe. Sync is a great feature, just too late for me. I played FFXI to help others that’s it. No XP awards for questing I think got me spoiled with other MMOs.

    I agree with Chainspell the graphics and design are still great compared to the new games especially with the res tweak. SE can and wont because it would indeed alienate the masses. The poster above is absolutely right. But in my imagination Iam hardly concerned with the masses. Iam just saying sit back and think......hmm FFXI with fully rendered next gen graphics....smile....and go about your day thinking about something other then the economy.

    This is a topic that is brought up every few weeks to a month and it varies on "They should update" or "Do you think they should update" etc.  One thing people dont realize that graphics are an element of a game but it's not essential.  I know that i'll play a game with a paper and pencil if its fun and entertaining but give me a game with super explosions and the sweetest graphics and i'll play for 30 minutes before i'm bored with it if it doesn't have a story or a purpose for all the shinyness.  The most important thing in a game is the system.  The storylines, quests, and the things to do in it.  Doesn't matter if it's state of the art graphics, older graphics, or paper and pencil.

    The original Zelda is a prime example.  The graphics were hot then but are outdated by cell phone standards of games but that game still plays well.  The story and the game itself is still enjoyable.  Graphics are nice but not required.
