Bioware has posted a new dev journal which looks at how they envision the Bounty Hunter in Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Boba Fett, Dengar, Zuckuss, IG-88, Bossk, 4-LOM. This was the lineup that started it all. Darth Vader wanted something done and his own people weren’t up to the task. So he called in specialists. Seeing this motley group of outlandish characters on the bridge rankled Vader’s officers and told us these guys were the real deal. When Vader felt it necessary to specifically look at Boba Fett when he mentioned he didn’t want anyone disintegrated, we understood this was a man with a reputation. When Boba Fett objected to Han Solo being frozen on the grounds that the Bounty Hunter needed Solo alive, Vader didn’t intimidate Fett -- as he did poor Lando -- or choke him senseless. He listened and reassured him in a businesslike manner. He was talking to a professional whose work he respected.
As this is the first blog we’ve done on classes, it’s important to give a little background on how classes work and the decisions we’ve made along the way to guide those decisions. When Star Wars™: The Old Republic ™ was still just a twinkling in our eye, James Ohlen (Creative Director and Lead Designer of Baldur’s Gate™ 1 & 2, Neverwinter Nights™, Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ and Dragon Age™) and I were both working on Dragon Age and were delighted at how personal, heroic and rewarding the origin stories made the experience. We talked numerous times about what it would mean to try to do that level of individualized story for an entire game but both knew that the time, expense and effort involved would have to have a big payoff—a game the average person might play through once and then set aside wasn’t going to do it. When we moved down to form the Austin studio and create BioWare’s first massively multiplayer RPG, we had the opportunity we were looking for.

Every article I read about this game just gets me more and more pumped up!!!
Great write-up. I'm really looking forward to hearing more as time goes on.
so...
The more I read the more it seems that chracter classes are going to be incredibly generic cookie cutter type of props for storyline progression. It's going to be interesting to see if there's to be any dynamics in the game besides a Left or Right choice in the story.
Being this is targeted to 10-25 year olds I doubt it's going to be anythign other then extremely simple to play.
The more I read the more I feel "meh" about it...
That's quite a varied demographic.

lolz yeah indeed df is the shit of all MMOs
SLOW down please before you POST.....Lol and check that SPELLING. OK not here to NERF the grammar. BUT I disagree on the fact that it is going to be TARGETED 10 - 25 TRUST me YOU do not want to label a AGE on this ONE. I am FORTY and I plan on being the FIRST one to STAND in line at my local RETAIL store at the MIDNIGHT release on top of that I plan on playing 24 HOURS straight to get ahead in the game.
I'm not sure I like the decision made about BH's being Imperials only, because it doesn't make complete sense. However, I absolutely love that Bioware is still Bioware when making a MMO. One thing I couldn't stand about PvE in MMO's is that you repeated those same quests regardless of the class you chose. It never made any sense and I'm glad Bioware has the brains to realize it, and the creativity to pull it off, and of course the passion for it so not to be lazy. I forsee this being the best PvE MMO to date once it releases.
Hmmm, good point about this probably being a good PvE game. I hadn't actually thought of that before now. [Even though, I'm a Bioware Fan!] I may actually give this game a try!

Ditto that. I'm 40 and I will be playing on launch day.

I'm not saying it isn't going to appeal to older people, it's just that 40 year old's are not the target age group for this game.
It's been made very clear that the goal is to appeal to EVERYONE's DREAMS of being a Jedi and Lucas Arts is very explicit that Star Wars is an all ages IP. This means it absolutely must be accessible to 10 year olds as a foundation and benchmark for development in the eye's of LA. My belief is that Bioware's involvement compliments this decision by bringing a recognizable lable to the title while riding upon the success of their previous story driven accomplishments. LA has previously came out in the past and made it clear that fans of Star Wars do not like reading (we'll have lot's of voice overs; 'tis good) and only desire instant gratification which further supports my lack of optimism.
Yes, I am very pessimistic about this game being something other other then a glossy and potentialy simplified version of WoW built around micro transactions. This doesn't mean I won't be wrong, just that I would be excitingly surprised if so.
Excellent article, sounds like they Get It.
