alright this is mainly me venting because i am extremely pissed off right now. Okay so i have about 6 chickens where i live in the country and theyve been attacked recently by some fucking dogs whose owners are dumb asses and dont lock them up. so he stays home from work today to do taxes and my mom lets the chickens out for the day because he is supposed to be watching. then around noon or so my neighbor comes to my house and tries to tell my dad that there are dogs loose but he doesnt fucking hear him knock. then my mom comes home at 4 and finds like 3 chickens dead including one ive had for 6 years. turns out my dad hadnt checked up on them for like 6 hours. I am so fucking pissed at him. i dont give a fuck if theyre just chickens i had one for 6 years and my fucking dumb ass dad lets it get knawed on by fucking dogs. god damnit this is really what i fucking needed for weekend...

i fucking loved that chicken. we got her so long ago and her other sisters died years ago. she lasted through so many possums and raccoons but getting attacked twice in two weeks by fucking dogs was too much. her wounds barely had healed and was too old and fat to fly up a tree.
I'd be more pissed at the neighbor who let his dogs kill your chicken. If they were mean dogs I'd probably kill them AND your neighbors chickens to teach him a lesson. He was concerned enough to supposedly attempt to contact someone at your home that his dogs were lose, but at the same time didn't seem to care to restrain them from getting lose to begin with. I know farmers, they don't usually chain their dogs or cats. He doesn't really care about your chicken. He only cares about his own chickens. Your Dad shouldn't have to keep an eye on your chickens all the time in order to make sure they aren't killed by your neighbors dogs and niether should you.

I wouldn't hate your dad for something so little even though I know how much they might have ment to you. Hate is a very powerful word and I don't think it's the word you should put your father under. They guy possibly took care of you for more years than that chicken. I'd just let it low because I'm sure everybody learned a lession here. I was in your position when I a blamed my dad for his birds death when the bird just got homesick when were were moving and was at our grandparents and he died. I was nothing but a kid then so I know where you are coming from.

I dunno Jackwhite....your bio says you are 29 years old, and live in NY, NY; yet your story is that you live in the country with your parents and own chickens.
The only "country" I know of in NY, NY is this big park area in the center of Manhatten, I think they call it "Central Park"? Are you homeless in Central Park with your mom and dad? And you still have internet access there?

I've lost hundreds of chickens to foxes.
It's pretty upsetting to be confronted with a load of dead bodies. Part of the ball game in the end, if you want to keep them. It's a rare rare chicken that dies of old age.
As for dad's. Those old duffers are nothing but trouble. If they are not waking up in need of immediate hospital attention they are out ramming into things in their V8's or chainsawing anything that can't run away from them.
Here in England, if a dog is owned by someone as opposed to being a wild one, the owner is legally responsable for any damage they do. Make them pay/destroy the animal. And if they come on your land again, shoot them. I have a duty of care to the animals I keep.
In most states its completely legal to kill a dog or any other animal domestic or not for killing a persons livestock.
Id look into that.

Such is life in the country. When I was a girl, we kids were given six little chickies as a present one year. We took good care of them and they liked us very much. Well, as long as we had food in our pockets. Coming up the hill from school one day, we were greeted by six headless chickens hanging over a fence in front of my uncle's house which was next to ours. There was also a bucket of heads. My aunt had just finished helping our little pets ascend to chicken heaven. We were crushed. We had even named them! We were also expected to pluck. Although heartbroken, our tears didn't interfere with our appetite that evening.

Killing a dog because it killed some chickens is a completely asshole thing to do. I'd even go so far as to call you a piece of shit if you did so. A dog that killed your pet cat or your pet dog is something else entirely. It sounds like the chicken was a pet and so it might as well of been a dog or cat, but it really doesn't take a vicious dog to kill a chicken. I have a little dachshund mix that is responsible for 2 dead love birds(under someone else's ownership) and 3-4 young birds under my care(they were wild birds). She can get into a scrap now and then with another of my dogs, but she saw the birds as nothing but a meal. Mostly she is a completely gentle and great dog. I know a chicken is a whole different bird, but I'm guessing the dogs were larger than my lap dog too. Please don't listen to these asses. If you want to be angry at someone, you can be angry at your dad(not hateful like Riki said), but more so at the dog owner.

Responsible pet owners don't let their pets run free to destroy other peoples property or kill their pets/ livestock, in this case.
If the pet owner cared enough about it to not have it shot, it would not be out killing other peoples animals.
If you can prove that it was your neighbors dogs that destroyed your chickens, then cant you take that to court?
It might be an option. Unless you want to somehow keep in good terms with your neighbor.
Anyways, sorry about your animasl though. I hope you can forgive your dad soon.

So it is your dads fault that you knew the dogs had eaten your chickens before n your mom let them out? The person who lets em out should be responsible for them. If your dad was doing taxes...I am sure that is more important than a few chickens.
And I would imagine...if you are sure beyond doubt it was your neighbours dogs doin the killing. You will have some legal rights. Least you should be able to get some compensation from your neighbours.
Hope that your probem would be fixed with your dad, try to talk to him and tell him what you feel about it... so that he will know..

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've cooled down considerably since I posted that. To all the posts saying I should shoot the dogs: I would have glady blown their heads off, but they were long gone by the time I got home and there are laws where you have to actually catch the dog gnawing on your chicken to shoot it, otherwise the owner could sue. All I can do is call the dog catcher but that won't do much considering I live by a little hippy town where a few dozen dogs run loose.
That's true. I had neighbours who had trouble with someone's dog and no one would do a thing until he actually got pictures of them jumping fences and worrying his livestock. Even then, not much was done. I think a pretty minor fine was all, and the township got that, not my neighbours. Luckily, the dogs never hurt anything, just ran wild, freaked everything out and dug holes under the fences. I'm not even sure they were required to fix the damages.
(And I meant when I was a little girl!)
