Given the disappointments, hype and failures of new MMOs released over the past 18 months, why don't Mythic re-release a new version of DAoC? It is still featuring high in popularity of released games and is still considered the best ever RvR game by hard core players. It should be reasonably in-expensive to give DAoC a quick gloss over and relaunch. It would also work out to be financially attractive for Mythic.
Members and guests of www.mmorpg should start a Campaign "Dark Age of Camelot Revival" and petition Paul Burnout (I know his myspace site) .....
Any advice welcome

Would take a new game engine, but hell I would play it!
DAOC was fun, give it up to date GFX and I am sure many would.
The "original" EQ "(CR's etc) would be another candidate for a makeover.
SOE dont give a rats ass though, they got p2p and mp's in their games haha.
The genre is dead, nothing offers challenge anymore, its EZ mode.
I am glad I got to be there when mmorpg's encouraged grouping, and didn't spoon feed you.
Solo play now rules, anti social greed is the way.
Although I too long for the glorey days of DAOC. If we all think back to those glorey days...they looked alot like WAR today. People complained a lot about DAOC during its reign bemoaning many similar issues as WAR today (Class balance, PVE content, etc).
I think Mythic is best served to continue to improve WAR. Its only 6ish months old..thats MMO infancy.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Release it back to the classic version of the game before the new OP classes and Silly PVE addons... and you got yourself one hell of a game!
Hibernia ftw!
Straight up DAoC before any expansions, with a new Engine, new graphics, and new world map. That would be great.
I agree. WAR is not a failure as a game, only a failure to hardcore fanatics, which every MMO will be until the end of time probably. The genre is not dead and never will be for a long time, just appreciate a game for what it is instead of what it is not and you will be a much happier gamer. Honestly, even in games like Vanguard that people say they dumbed down to WoW levels... when I died in that game and lost 9% of my experience or so and I was in a dungeon and could not get back in for an hour to retreive my corpse, I didn't say "man I love doing this, brings back EQ feelings!", I said "wtf, I want to play to relax and have fun after work, not get pissed off and stressed out". But I guess I just changed as a gamer over time, which now makes me annoyed with all the people that won't leave the past and move on with their lives, but I guess we all change differently.
whatever happened to the Origins server?
Without commenting on WAR or other current games....
I would definately check out an "updated" DAoC that had modern graphics/UI and gameplay/content around New Frontiers/Catacombs level (without the abomination of Atlantis of course)

I can relate.
Generally speaking though, many people who cry for the more unforgiving, hardcore playstyle simply want everyone else to play that way. They assume that they will be superior and avoid any nagging death penalties or find a faster method to power in levels/skills/crafting.
It seems they want to look down from their lofty perch at max level or from their supremely crafted 'edifice of DOOM' and sneer at the peons struggling to kill rats.
Granted some actually want a challenge in their game but are MMOs the proper place to search for such a challenge? Even the most hardcore game in this genre is still rather plodding.
Admittedly most could be a little more mentally engaging but giving your life away to actually be a viable contributor to the action is rather sad
Mark Jacobs did his level best to destroy DAOC.Remember the TRIALS OF ATLANTIS expansion that cause half the player base to quit ? What better indictment of his awfull decision making, than the introduction of CLASSIC servers that have nome of his rejected ideas..Then he follows it up with the sterling "success" WAR, that took advantage of none of the great ideas in DAOC.Now we want him to get another wack at the near dead corpse that was once DAOC ? Right.
Mythic isn't capable anymore. The best they could do is rob the past and just remake their old game. Even then, it probably won't be as good as you guys seem to remember it to be.
Looking at Warhammer, especially the damning new king raid... It's apparent that any talent that company once had is long gone.
They were doing an "Origins" server. Had a poll up etc and there was a lot of interest in it. As the changes to the game were what drove people away (at least many of them).
Then they published the FAQ for what the server would be... and interest took a nosedive.
Because they took Old Frontiers and were basicly importing all the crap that made people leave. There were some threads about that and the developers just stated "the new system is better" etc... Yes it was so much better that they... well useless rant etc you can check the camelotherald to see the daily world wide highs population wise.
I quit WAR as I didn't like it.. I'll leave it at that.
I won't go back to DAoC because of two reasons:
1) They destroyed the game in my opinion with idiot changes.
2) The cluster I played on used to have more population than the entire game does now. Now my cluster is basicly dead and I'd have to start over on Devon to see much of anything going on. I don't like the game as it is now.. so I certainly am not starting over.
If they actually released a server without the stupidty added in (the brilliant changes by devs) then sure I'd go back.
Then again DAoC isn't the only game I'd go back to for a "classic" server.
They released a statement claiming there wasn't enough interest (which is odd because there was more than enough interest) and claimed that they wanted to keep their current customers happy.. rather than having those clusters mostly die as people went to a new server.
Of course that announcement was made after EA said WAR dropped to 300k subs and cut more jobs. So most likely EA pulled the plug...
I personally would find it hard to believe that they would not get enough subs to support at least two "origins" servers if they were really origins servers and not the crap they listed in the FAQ.
The entire game on a good night has 3200 playeers (most nights its in the 2000's) acrossed all clusters. 3200 concurrent players is enough for one server.... let alone 3 clusters.
Oh and the pvp server has 6 to 13 players (yes that's right 6 to 13 on an ENTIRE server)
and the co-op server has maybe 150 upwards of 200...
Now honestly does anyone believe that 3000 people would not return for an origins server that basicly has no development time? I certainly don't see how you justify running a server for 13 people... but won't attempt to get back 3,000 to say 10,000 which Origins could bring .. especially given how WAR is doing.
I guess I'm wrong but hey I guess that's my job as a forum poster.
*edited* extra spaces because I hate how the forum changes borked formatting.
To be kind to Mark Jacobs, I wonder if he has been taught a hard lesson with recent developments and trends. I genuinely believe that the people at Mythic Entertainment thought ToA would stimulate the game playing experience, even though it was a miserable failure. With WAR essentially cloning WoW and not succeeding in attracting the volume of subscribers it provides a good opportunity for some critical reflection. Rather than going back to the drawing board some good suggestions have been made here for how DAoC could be revamped and relaunched. Surely this is not beyond the horizons of people who both want to have a successful MMO and reap the financial benefits? There is some sound logic to the concept of re-releasing DAoC.
DAoC PvP was a blast. DAoC PvE was terrible.
Reliance on buffbots was terrible.
Reliance on tank/healer/dps/ENDURANCE REGEN to get anything done was terrible.
Inability to solo when you wanted was terrible. No groups for your bard to join? Log out. You ain't soloing shit.
Every boss is tank n spank PvE was terrible. You NEED a PvE base, even in a PvP game. Sorry. Sheep for the wolves and all that.
Remember sitting in the dragon zone ALL DAY farming the mobs in a raid to level? Grinding at it's worst.
Buffbots. I say it twice because it was doubly terrible to have to rely on them to compete.
DAoC had some great moments....all in PvP.
It would need a serious makeover that Mythic isn't capable of doing. See the failure that was WAR for proof.
I would like that very much... Glory days of RvR and PvP Servers was a blast.
Yes.
Someone should seriously start a petition to mythic.
Im too lazy to do it, but im just saying someone should
The problem is that developers are not listening to the MMORPG community, anymore; they stay in oxygen tents and play WoW-all-day when not developing a WoW-like game.
We have been telling them, look, your new games suck; we already got WoW; we want (a) world immersion, (b) challenge, (c) creativity, (d) community, and (e) innovation.
We are so desperate we want them to re-release old games instead of developing new games.
"Hey boss, funny story. You know that project we spent millions of dollars and years of development time on? We'll, we're shutting it down because it sucked and launching a re-hash of the thing we did 8 years ago."
"You're fired."
"Excellent decision, sir. I'll clean out my office immediately."

I ask for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave.
redoing DAOC would be a waste of time and cash, if it were so great why is no one playing it? Anyway WAR is a pretty decent game itself, it just needs more work and yes there are a few ideas that they should pull from DAoC into WAR but not many,
I played DAoC from its openning till a few months into ToA and whats so funny is on the furoms most of you were crying for a more hardcore PvE experience and they gave it to you with ToA and you cried that it was to hard, you cried that the frontier zones where boring and they gave you a more varied frontier with more interactable keeps and added towers and you still cried and whined , bottom line is most of you are just idiots who will never be satisfied so what does it matter anyway.
