Druids & their free hands

WoOzyWoOzy Member Posts: 30

I would like some advice from you fellow druids out there. I plan on playing a druid on release and i absolutely love staves, always have.

However, i like some of the bonuses from certain off-hand items. I would like to know what people recommend as a good one-hand weapon for a druid to use so that off-hand items can be equipped as well.

I would very much like to use wands as the 1 hand weapon, but as far as i recall druids cannot train in them, right ?

Another question i meant to ask:

What is meant by 'fist weapons' in this game ? Do i take it in the literal sense? i.e. being trained to use ones bare fists as a weapon?

Or are there accessories to enhance the power of the fists? ... say brass knuckles for e.g.

At the start, druid can use Staves or Daggers. I believe if you can find the propper trainer, you can also get Fist, Mace, Spear. I may be missing one. :)

Fist is a weapon ability in this game, not a weaponless one. If you play a NE Druid, I haven't seen any fist weapons any closer to home than Ironforge. They seem to be easier to find in the Tauren area, so a Tauren Druid may find fist weapons an option earlier.

Does the skill increase your attacks in any way barefisted? I'm not entirely sure, maybe someone who tested this can comment.

The other thing about fist weapons is they tend to offer main hand/off hand pairs. Casters can use special offhand items in the game, but I think in this case you would need to have actual dual wield capability to use fist weapons to full effectiveness and druids don't have that.

I leveled a Druid up to lvl 23 in Open. I had a couple off hand items from quests, but never really found a good dagger for sale or available through quests in the NE lands. I looked for the mace trainer where an older forum post said she would be and no trainer, but if you can find the trainer, mace would probably make a better compliment than dagger as more of them seem to have stats suited for a caster and I saw a lot more maces as quest rewards or drops than daggers..

The Fist trainer was easy to find, but once again, I never ran across any fist weapons until I was browsing a shop in Ironforge near the end of beta and I didn't bother giving it a try at that point.

Wands go in your ranged weapon slot not either of your hands.

Thank you for your feedback, fiontar & you KG for that piece of info. I only got my druid to lvl 19.9 in OB (the agony!) but i also had 2 or 3 off-hand items i would have liked to use.

Now i know enough to look out for maces & their trainers, and in the meantime using daggers if i really want to equip a certain off-hand item. image

I would say any trainer you find would be good to stop and use. Never know what item you might pick up down the road and want to use.

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....
But I'd be thinking about Wilma.

    I had a level 20 Druid.

I pretty much trained anything I could find. I had Staff, Daggers, Fist weapons, 1H Mace and 2H Mace.

I believe the list above are the only weapons a Druid can use.

I enjoyed using a Dagger for the fact that it is a fast attack and you could use off hand items. (you get a druid only item that looks like a bag that gives a bonus to mana regen) So I used that with my dagger.

I tried Fist weapons, but to really get the "cool" factor effect when using those, you need duel wield, which you dont get. So I passed on them.

I tried 2H mace which was pretty fun. Nothing like carrying a HUGE hammer on your back and smashing anything unlucky enough to be under it. Not to mention you hold it like a Major League Baseball player when you attack something.

I never got around to trying 1H mace because I was having too much fun crushing Leper Gnomes with my 2H mace = /

Edit: You can train fist weapons in Darnassus and mace weapons in ironforge.

I had a similar expereince to Vknid.  Got a NE Druid up to level 30 and trained in 1H Mace and 2H Mace.  I skipped fist weapons for some reason.  Maybe because I never found a good drop to make me train in it.

I'm almost certain they took out spears in one of the final few patches, and Druids can't train in blades, axes, or wands (didn't read that anywhere, just a logical guess).

I had a two or three items that I switched in my off hand.  I recall one was something like a +5 int, -3 spirit that I got as a reward from a quest in Auberdine.  I mainly used that when I played more of a healing role to boost my mana pool.  The other one I used more often was a nice random drop from a somewhat hidden outdooor shrine area.  It was located on the west side of the road heading north just before you hit Felwood in Ashenvale.  It had +4 spirit +4 Agility (I believe) and looked like a staff itself (called a Sanguine...something, can't remember).  So whenever I wielded my 1H mace or dagger, it looked like I had a staff that I could swing in my off hand.  Looked pretty wild.

By the way, I had a really nice 2H mace weapon for the low levels I was at.  I forget the exact name, but it looked like a giant spiked mace with a hole in the center.  It did something like 70-90 damage and had a 75 point damage frost proc occansionally.  I believe it was the final reward from the Raene's Cleansing quest in Astranaar if I remember correctly.  What a nice weapon image

Yes, you're skill will raise barefisted. Found that out after fighting Lake Skulkers, that has a spell on you that makes you drop your weapon every now and then image
